* Sakura from ''{{Naruto}}'' is a good example. She had commendable CharacterDevelopment from a [[TheLoad weak]], [[ClingyJealousGirl clingy]], FauxActionGirl to a more self-sufficient, kinder, and much more mature ActionGirl. And then, after the Pain arc, she made some hasty, immature decisions that caused her development to take several steps back, to the point where she herself is now claiming she never had any of that CharacterDevelopment at all.
** In ''{{Naruto}}'', Sasuke's gone off the rails entirely, he's no longer even recognizable as the character he once was. He's turned from 'revenge-obsessed jerk' to 'revenge-obsessed jerk who is [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold beginning to care about his team]]', back to 'revenge-obsessed jerk', to 'revenge-obsessed jerk who is [[PetTheDog beginning to care about his team]]' again (all a natural progression, even if the doubling back was somewhat frustrating), and then, abruptly, to '[[EvilLaugh cackling]] [[StupidEvil cartoon villain caricature]] who is now working with one of the targets of his revenge for unspecified reasons'. {{YMMV}} if the transition was justified.

* A case can be made for more than a few of the characters of ''CodeGeass'', but none more so than [[TheEveryman Ohgi]], initially the VoiceOfReason of the rank-and-file Black Knights who understood the burden of leadership that rested upon Zero, he [[LoveMakesYouDumb lost the plot once he fell for Villetta]] and made many questionable decisions, with ultimately disastrous results.

** Katejina Loos suffers this big time in ''[[Anime/MobileSuitVictoryGundam Victory Gundam]]'' [[spoiler:-- up until her FateWorseThanDeath.]]

** Orochimaru laughing maniacally and being subsequently sealed away. It's not the maniacal laugh that's out-of-place, but Orochimaru was cautious and a genius. He didn't just break out in maniacal laughter like he was addicted to crack, he knew how to keep a poker face until he'd basically already won. The derailment is that he effectively just popped up in the middle of the fight and started laughing insanely purely as an excuse for him not to notice his being stabbed by an otherworldly weapon he clearly has no idea of the capabilities of.
** Naruto and Sakura in the {{Filler}} arcs have all their CharacterDevelopment thrown out the window for the [[PlayedForLaughs sake of comedy]]. Naruto TookALevelInDumbAss while Sakura TookALevelInJerkAss.

* In ''{{Bleach}}'' Uryu seemingly has forgotten about how Mayuri tortured his grandfather to death. Instead of displaying open hatred for Mayuri when they meet up again, he only seems mildly annoyed with Mayuri, and his reaction is PlayedForLaughs. The show seems to be glossing over the first time they met and what Mayuri did to his grandfather and his entire clan.
** However, in the (at the time of this writing) most recent anime-only filler arc, he mentions despising Mayuri.
*** Call this YMMV. Uryu hasn't had much of a chance to do anything about Mayuri since the Soul Society. He's also known for keeping a level head at most times.
** Yukio and Giriko from the Fullbring arc. They are each calm and quiet normally, but after receiving Ichigo's power, it went to their heads, causing them to become loud and boastful, Yukio declaring himself a [[AGodAmI god]]
** Orihime went from wanting to try to get stronger to breaking down and crying over Ichigo. The current Fullbring arc has not been any more generous towards her.
** There's Ulqiorra as well, who started off being uncaring and focused only on carrying out whatever orders were given. Then when he and Ichigo actually fought and his sword got cracked, he fled, just to get an advantage again, and had the nerve to say Ichigo never stood a chance despite evidence to the contrary.

* What in God's name happened to Graham Aker in Season 2 of {{Gundam 00}}? In Season 1 he was an obsessive Flag pilot, and totally loyal to [[{{Eagleland}} The Union]]. Then in Season 2 he's...an obsessed Japanese {{Otaku}} calling himself Mr. Bushido? Who acts like he just walked out of a Super Robot show? What. The. Hell. And the fanbase that decries the situation in Seed/Seed Destiny says nothing about it? Yes Graham's transformation ''is'' funny. The first time Mr. Bushido appears it's hard not to laugh at how hysterical he's become ([[TropesAreNotBad Tropes]]--even this one--[[TropesAreNotBad Are Not Bad]] after all). But it's still CharacterDerailment.

*** Though to be fair, Paul being defeated by the same Pokemon he gave so much grief and didn't care for was the best comeuppance he could have gotten. Anything harsher would have been [[DisproportionateRetribution more than he deserved]].

** Actually, Paul losing to the Pokemon he thought was useless was the best revenge that he could have received. Anything harsher than that would be DisproportionateRetribution. When Brandon [[BreakTheHaughty humiliated Paul in front of his brother]] and Ash, who had never at that point defeated Paul, he took a serious lesson in humility. And he's still a JerkAss.

* Priss Asagiri becomes a victim of this in the final episodes of Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 when she reveals to her love interest, ADP Officer Leon [=McNichol=], that the real reason she hated the AD Police was because they broke her favorite CD during a boomer attack. Previously built up to be a complex and mysterious stoic loner, this revelation completely derails her integrity for the sake of cheap laughs and misguided social commentary.

** Or, you know, it was character development.

* ''MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce'' does this to some members of the old cast but special mention goes to [[BadassDecay former]] [[{{Badass}} badass]] [[LadyOfWar Signum]].
** To be fair this is less derailment of the old cast and more the painful insertion of far too many [[VillainSue Villain Sues]].

* Tails from ''SonicX''. In the first two seasons, he was characterized as being someone extremely intelligent who happened to be a kid, rather than a kid who happened to be extremely intelligent as he is characterized in the games. He becomes derailed even more in the third season.

*** Let us not forget how Sasuke came to work for Madara to begin with. Let us review: Sasuke from the start of the story pretty much lives to see Itachi die, and as far as he is concerned he will do nearly anything to achieve this (except maybe kill his friends). He even went so far as to damn near sell his body to Orochimaru just to see this achieved, so we know he wanted Itachi dead more then he wanted his next breath. Fast-foreward to Itachi's death and him meeting Uchiha Madara, who up until that point was almost a total stranger to him. Madara proceeds to tell Sasuke a story that even from Sasuke's point of view should not hold water. Within 24 hours Sasuke goes from hating Itachi with an all-consuming passion to willing to destroy the world because he loved him so much... Apparently years of hatred and aggression disappear like that if some creepy guy in a mask who you have no reason to trust tells you a story that you have no reason to believe.

* Brock from ''{{Pokemon}}'' was the voice of reason with occasional attractions towards girls in Kanto. When he got back from his [[PutOnABus bus trip]] during the Orange Islands FillerArc, he became a super freak with raging hard-ons every time he sees things with two legs and a vagina. [[spoiler:The writers caught on by the end of the Sinnoh arc and gave him a mercy bus ride.]]

** Considering that Ash has battled various opponents in the past with impressive feats, you'd think he'd be able to beat Paul once without getting his ass handed to him. Though no matter what, Ash seems to fight like an inept beginner, especially considering his impressive victories in the past, and don't get anyone started on the ass whipping he gave to Fantina in a rematch.

** Most recently, Ambipom was literally PutOnABus, for incredibly contrived reasons that made no sense given the Pokemon's previously established character. From the beginning Aipom/Ambipom was shown to love Contests, which eventually led to it getting traded to Dawn, the Contest Coordinator of the group. DP 124 has the characters participating in [[MundaneUtility Pokemon Ping Pong]], and Ambipom suddenly decides to leave her trainer and the Contests she loved so much to go off with a complete stranger and train for an activity she didn't even know existed before the previous episode. Many fans are not happy.
** In the Sinnoh saga, [[spoiler: Paul's transition from JerkAss to a more considerate and caring trainer at the League tournament was way too abrupt and made little sense, with little to no explanation to it other than being used to finally put an end to his rivalry with Ash.]]
