Frank75: I first put this at the bottom of the page, but since noone answered, I put it here.

Frank75: This page has become so long that it is among the top 10 of longest pages. Time for a split?

Frank75: What do you think would be the better namespace - Fan Nickname, Fan Nick, or just append it to the titles?

Frank75: Like this:

Well, I'll start this if nobody objects.

ninjacrat: I'd go with FanNickname/LiveActionTV. That way it gets an icon, and if in the future we decide to break it down further (FanNickname/Bleach) it works out properly.

Gus: Just in case it was making you as nuts as it was me... Cigarette Smoking Man's scripted name was probably "C. G. B. Spender". He gave "Mr. Hunt" and "Raul Bloodworth" as names in two episodes, but these two were revealed in the episodes to be pseudonyms.

Scifantasy: Do "Bats" and "Captain Tightpants" really fit the criteria here? Those weren't given by fans, they're from the shows and subsequently adopted.

Gus: Well, they do for me. "Captain Tightpants", especially, was adopted by both the cast and fans off of a throw-away line. Its persistence went far beyond what was initially intended, mostly due to fans. Actually, on the X-Files thing: I think "CSM" was used in series scripts to indicate who was speaking... Anyway, that's my two cents. If the fans actually use it, it is a fan nickname, by me.

Janitor: Did the alphabetic thing on the examples. Nothing was cut. //later: <glares at Grev>

I just washed that floor!

Gus; What is so frackin hard? The term on the left, in alphabetic order.

Ununnilium: Can we put real people in here? I was going to put Jack "King" Kirby.

HeartBurn Kid: I'm wondering that myself, since I have a Catholic friend who constantly refers to the pope as "Papa Ratzi."

Ununnilium: It seems that people who are involved in creating the work would fit here. But not random people like the Pope.

Seven Seals: Although "Papa Ratzi" is a brilliant nickname, we regrettably can't include it, since it's 1) just your friend who's using it and 2) not about someone involved with a work of fiction. (Obvious snark about the Bible omitted.)

Edit: I was foolish enough not to google it before making that statement. The 78,000 hits over here suggest "Papa Ratzi" is rather popular. The point about limiting it to fiction stands, though.

ralphmerridew: If you're limiting it to fiction, then shouldn't Asimov also be removed?

Sukeban: "Ratzinger Z" (17000 Google hits) and "Panzerpapst" (1100) are also moderately popular, btw. The second is an upgrade on his older nickname, "Panzerkardinal" (16200 hits).

Mister Six: Can people please add where these characters have been given these names? For example, I know that Captain Quantum comes from www.televisionwithoutpity.com but probably most people wouldn't. Probably the easiest way is to turn the character's nickname into a link to the relevant website.

HeartBurn Kid: It's not always quite that easy. I mean, how do I link to a crowd chant? :)

Lale: Since Peeves has used the name "Voldy," doesn't that violate the Fan Nickname rule?

Tabby: No. See above discussion re: Bats and Captain Tightpants.

Fast Eddie: WTF?! Who started the contributor-allocated stuff? Cheesy. Way cheesy. Either a fan community larger than one uses the term, or it is bogus. //Later: Okay. Thanks for the bold font. I missed it, first time through. I'm on sort of a "not a talk page!" rampage, and it got under my skin.

Meta4: Two proposals:
  1. Reorganize the examples, and group them by their source, and group the sources by their media category.
  2. Split off the "tropers' personal nicknames for characters" section.
What do you think?

Meta4: Silence implies no one gives a crap. I'm doing this thing tomorrow.

That Other 1 Dude: Removed:

  • Combustion Man — From Avatar: The Last Airbender. They even give a nod to the fans when Sokka gives him the same nickname.
Sokka: Hey, I got it. The perfect name for that guy! “Combustion Man”!
Toph: Good job, Sokka. Now let's get out of here before “Combustion Man” catches us!
Sokka: See‌ It fits so well.

The name was actually revealed before the season even started in a special magazine. It was just never used in-series until then (though some people still use Sokka's other suggestion of "Sparky-Sparky-Boom Man")

Son Tenks: My brother and I call the black guy from Numb3rs "Black Truffle" because, well, we don't know his name and he said black truffle once. His partner, the white guy, we call "White Chocolate."

Fly: Taking out Robo-Shinji, because (while apt) only one person to my knowledge has ever used the name.

Nerdorama: I think that name's actually in use on 4chan. ...Or So I Heard. Something to do with the Girlfriend of Steel video games. And the one guy who used it in his Raiden/Shinji comparison in his blog...which used to be in the Metal Gear WMG page but has now been lost, but that's probably the "one person" you're referring to.

Citizen: I believe all the captain examples (at least) for Bleach belong under Troper Fan Nicknames. IIRC, they were all listed as names some guy had seen on some avatar and some forum. //// Cut to here until vouched for:
Captain Bitchy Ninja (alternately spelled Bitchininja and Bitchninja) — Soifon
Captain Tuberculosis — Jushiro Ukitake
Captain Grabass — Shunsui Kyoraku
Captain Freakshow — Mayuri Kurotsuchi
Captain AssholeGin Ichimaru
Captain Broken aka Captain Superman aka Evil Superman — Sosuke Aizen, because his abilities are so varied and powerful that he's considered too powerful by Bleach fans. And of course, he just looked like Superman/Clark Kent.
Captain No1LikesU — Kaname Tosen
Captain EatYourFace — Sajin Komamura
Captain Better-Than-You — Byakuya Kuchiki
Captain Grumpypants — Toshiro Hitsugaya
Captain Mom — Retsu Unohana (VERY accurate)
Captain Pwnzedyou — Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryusai
...but not Kenpachi. Kenpachi is simply Kenpachi.
Shaq Fu - Zommari Leroux, the "Septima Espada" from Bleach, due to his more than stereotypical appearance of a Scary Black Guy.

Charred Knight: Whichigo is the only one I have heard of too.

Chris X: I would say that most of them are Troper Nicknames... with the exception of Captain Mom and Captain Broken. Many forums has used those to refer to Unohana and Aizen, not just the said Troper Nicknamer. So, yeah... Let the two terms 'Captain Mom' and 'Captain Broken' stay.

HeartBurn Kid: Cut Shane-O-Mac for Shane McMahon, since it's not a fan nickname if it gets used on TV first, even if they stopped using it on TV and the fanbase still uses it.
Rogue 7: pulled
  • Narutard is also a term used derisively towards so-called "anime fans" who spend all their time watching Naruto, writing Naruto fanfics, shipping Naruto characters, and posting Naruto versus threads. There's more to life than Naruto, people. Most Naruto fans just assume it's used by non-ANIME fans because they tend to congregate with other Naruto fans (or Narutards). However, certain all encompassing congregations use the term a little more specifically.

Complaining about fandoms you don't like much?

Chris X: To Amuro NT 1... well I didn't want to say Komamura is a bad ass. But the definition of Wolf Man is where a wolf-like creature has an ability to shapeshift into human, while Komamura is permanently wolf, which generally fits Big, Badass Wolf. Just look at the Big, Badass Wolf and see why I didn't consider him that much of a Badass.

For proof, here's an excerpt from the Wolf Man page definition:

Technically, a number of variations are possible: in some mythologies, a werewolf really is a wolf, who is able to take the form of a human. In Speculative Fiction, the werewolf is often neither really wolf nor man, but some form of alien. However, far and away the most popular conceit is that a werewolf is a human who has somehow (especially against his will) become able to temporarily transform (usually unwillingly) into a wolf.

Citizen: Is "Bizarro Nagato" (referring to the alternate Nagato in the 4th Suzumiya Haruhi novel) a Fan Nickname, or is it just me?
Filby: Anyone else think this page oughta get split up a la Nightmare Fuel? It seems kind of unwieldy.
tHHHeGame1083: It was JBL who coined "Power Ranger" at 2006's No Mercy PPV. The fans picked it up afterwards.

HeartBurn Kid: Hm. Learn something new every day. Maybe I should watch more of the PP Vs... :)

Large Blunt Object: thatother1dude, regardless of your personal feelings regarding Tim Buckley, calling him and his characters B^U IS a widely known nickname, and you have no reason to pull it.

That Other 1 Dude: Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is about Fan Nicknames, and that was obviously not made by fans of his. It's the same reason we don't add Lord Dominus: It's a nicknamed used by people that hate the comic. There are some that are derisive, but that's more about hating a particular character or element of a show that they otherwise like (i.e. "Spawn", for Kimberly). I'm pretty sure it's already listed under Memetic Mutation anyway.

Rann: Clinging to technicalities that aren't is kinda lame.

Citizen: Other Dude: Very well. You're wrong.

That Other 1 Dude: What? So something is considered a Fan Nickname if it's used by people that hate whatever it is? When was this decided? Is it somewhere else in the discussion? That seems to go againt both the name and the desciption of the article. Don't just say it's a technicality. If this article is about any nickname for something related to a piece of fiction regardless of who uses it, it fits, but I don't see anything that says it should. (P.S. If it does, are we suppose to add "Fuckley" (which I think is mostly from 4Chan) back to the list?)

Rann: You're right. "Fuckley" really should be back on there.

Large Blunt Object: I pulled it because I'd honestly never seen anyone use "Fuckley" before. If it's actually a common nickname, back it goes!

Also, why the zog is it showing up as a Contributor Page?

That Other 1 Dude: Also, I think B^U referes to the face and/or expression itself, not the characters with it. They I suppose that just splitting hairs.

Rann: ... What's with all the "Buffy the Vampire Banger" stuff? It seems like one guy doing his own little thing, mostly. He even made a -page- for his own personal experience, which frankly comes off just a little... disturbed.

Ununnilium:

  • This troper once stated in a discussion of translation arguments that it doesn't matter how Ayra's name is spelled in Seisen no Keifu, her real name should be "Kickass". It's true, anyway.

    • OK, now I'm curious and going to ask anyway. WHAT THE FUCK?
    • It comes from the TF2chan Image Board. Beyond that, this troper has no clue.
    • It's a reference to the Medic will take in a relationship in fanworks.

Xenosaga spoiler:

  • chaos IS Jesus, or at least the Gnostic version thereof. I Am Not Making This Up.

    • Odd; the yaoi fangirls seem to like him.

    • Which seems a little odd when you think about it, since Elizabeth from Pirates Of The Caribbean has the same problem, and with double Yoko's score. If anyone, the nickname "Doombitch" should be reserved for her.

Conversation In The Main Page.

Tabby: Pulled the whole section on HRG, because that's what the production team called him from the beginning. Placed here for posterity/later argument.

  • HRG - Mr. Bennet, named for his trademark horn-rimmed glasses. Often referred to in-show as "the guy with the horn-rimmed glasses" by characters who do not know his name. Since his real name was revealed in the final episode of the first season, fans have shown themselves loath to refer to him as "Mr. Bennet" (and even more loath to call him "Noah"), and so have stuck with "HRG". Even the actors and production staff have been known to refer to him as "HRG" in commentaries and interview. The UK DVD cases even use it in their episode summaries.
    • This troper lives in Australia and was amused to find him referred to as 'HRG' in three of her local TV guide's episode summaries.
    • Oddly enough, the glasses aren't actually horn-rimmed, despite the fact that characters in the show refer to them as such.
    • This troper watches this show with Closed Captioning turned on and discovered that even the early episodes refer to him as HRG
