I just saw the movie a couple days ago, and Mal did indeed shoot at the rope three times: He missed the first two times, then the reaver ship fired a sawblade-like thing that whizzed past Mal\'s head, and then he snap-turned back towards Jayne with that \'annoyed look\' on his face, and then successfully shot the rope, while not even aiming (he shot as soon as he turned while the first two shots were aimed). He did nearly the same thing in the series (though I will admit he wasn\'t shooting and missing the horse, but still) -- he got grazed in the arm and then snap-turned (in nearly the same way) with the same look on his face, and pulled a quickshot and hit the horse perfectly, killing it instantly (otherwise it probably would have ran off as it looks like he shot it in the heart).
