Starting in 2012, the Russian military deployed in support of the Assad regime in the Syrian Civil War. While their public reasoning for intervening was nominally the containment of ISIS, over time their focus proved to be more on destroying anti-Assad rebels. By and large, Syria has been a proving ground for the Russian military\\\'s technology and tactics, with mixed results.
