* StrawLoser: One thing commonly noted of \\\'\\\'Shield Hero\\\'\\\' is that everyone who isn\\\'t Naofumi, his party, and his few allies primarily exist for the purpose of making Naofumi\\\'s actions and choices \\\"correct\\\".
** The biggest examples are Myne and, by extension, everyone in Melromarc who believes her and condemns Naofumi for her false accusations. Myne is so ObviouslyEvil and tells so many BlatantLies that it becomes absurd that people would continue to believe her without \\\'\\\'any\\\'\\\' second-guessing (sure, it makes sense why the nobility would act that way, since all of them stand by the side of the king, who absolutely hates the Shield Hero, but the fact not a single member of the common people besides the blacksmith doubted her lies, even if only due to distrust towards royalty, is stretching the suspension of disbelief pretty thin), but this continues to happen until she finally gets put on trial by the Queen. Myne is the most obvious example of a HateSink who exists solely for Naofumi to overcome her.
** Motoyasu is amongst the people who believe Myne, but he has several other flaws which don\\\'t do him any great favors. For example, there\\\'s his CasanovaWannabe personality and all-female party which are exaggerated to provide direct comparison to Naofumi\\\'s ObliviousToLove and UnwantedHarem traits. Compared to the skirt-chasing, white-knighting Motoyasu, Naofumi (especially after his CharacterDevelopment) looks like a gentleman. Also, the fact that Motoyasu gets handed pretty much everything he ever wanted simply because he\\\'s a {{Hunk}} also makes Naofumi\\\'s morally-grey actions and hard work seem comparatively heroic.
** The other three heroes who are so woefully incompetent that they wind up causing even more damage to the world than the waves as well as being so self-centered that they can\\\'t even function together and take even constructive criticism as personal attacks. It\\\'s not until the fallout from their awakening of the Spirit Turtle and each of their betrayals by Bitch that they finally start getting their acts together.

His issue with it seems to come from a belief that this is being critical of the show (which, admittedly, the first part \\\'\\\'does\\\'\\\' get a little opinionated...but the part in parentheses was added by someone else after the fact and could probably just be toned down), which it isn\\\'t. He added \\\"by the detractors\\\" to the first line of the trope to apparently add justification. He suggested to me that we could find another YMMV trope to describe this, but the problem here is threefold:
----
1) It is a FACT that the characters in question are written to make Naofumi look good. Even story and characters \\\'\\\'continuously\\\'\\\' remind us that Naofumi is better more heroic, wiser, more powerful, and more sensible than each of these characters.

2) There is no fan/detractor divide on this. Almost everyone who watches the show agrees that it makes deliberate effort to make these characters look worse than Naofumi. Whether or not it does so heavy-handedly is one thing, but there is almost no question that this is the case.

3) Even IF we moved these examples to a different YMMV trope, StrawLoser would still be a valid trope, as per points 1 and 2 above. We would just basically be duplicating (or rewriting) what was said here onto a different YMMV trope.
