He is thinking not, as the description\'s wording might suggest, of his dog\'s dead body or of sex with it, but of his dog back when it was alive and frolicking with him, which might be literally the only experience Reilly has had of unrestrained joy and play.
Again, not what I would think about, but I\'m pretty sure that no bestiality or necrophilia were meant to be suggested, just someone in a joyless life (albeit one he had made so) reaching back in time to a moment of freedom and happiness comparable to what some people are able to experience in sex.
