It still has issues with the racialized haircut and lips, but at the very least his skin color now matches original EMIYA's skin color which goes a long way towards making it not outright racist (along with the nickname change from Tamamo Cat to Edgemiya).
The lighter skin just looks better, anyway.

Although not made explicit, the reason why that moment in time is critical is because the Mongol Horde was still expanding westwards in the Middle East and, without a strong Mamluk Sultanate to face them, they would have continued on to the Mediterranean and God only knows what would have happened afterwards to North Africa and the Levant.

It's the Ninth Crusade period who attempt to replicate the stories about Richard Lionheart. Basically the original plan for the Singularity is that the Crusaders have the Grail, led by the fake Richard Lionheart, fighting against the Pharaoh army and go extreme deus vult on everyone. Knight of the Round proceed to murder the shit out of the Crusaders, Ozy steal the Grail, and the Singularity goes off-rail because even if we got the Grail from Ozy already half-way through the story, Lion King's presence make the entire thing unstable nonetheless.
There's no united speculation on who the fake Richard is, but I personally think it's Baldwin IV's piece of shit brother in-law because that's the first thing that comes up when thinking about bloodthirsty Crusader.
I like to think it was Barbarossa and we'd kill him by making him trip into a river, at which point he instantly drowns.
