[up]Has "world famous" and "slam poet" ever been used together in a sentence?

Monique's beat poet fame always strikes me as some kind of odd wish fulfillment on Tats's end.

Could it be that he was a beat poet once? A shitty one? That would be hilarious and explain a lot about his artistic inferiority complex and sensitivity to criticism.

Imagine Tats having to dodge tomatoes on a daily basis and vowing that one day, ONE DAY, the world will understand his ART! [lol]

[up]Especially considering Monique's poetry, slam or not, doesn't really strike me as good, let alone something special.

It'd be a weird kind of funny if Tats was saner. Monique stops shaking her ass, and her audience turns on her because they think her poetry sucks. They just liked her booty. But then that would feed into Tats' delusion that people were using his comic for spank material which...well...the fact that the Sinfest page of Rule 34 only has 27 images (most of them being edits of existing comics) says all that needs about that.

The obsession with slam poetry, Monique's beret, the ND "peace sign" symbols (☮), and the Superfly-style pimps indicate to me that Sinfest is firmly stuck in the Seventies. I half-expect Tats to start doing anti-Nixon strips.

Oddly, that's the era in which Tats was a toddler.

Given what has happened to the Saudi guy, I think there is justified fear of that.

[up]Given what the Sisterhood gets up to in this setting, if I were in her place, I'd have a panic room and a battalion of the most hardcore Devil Troopers as my personal bodyguards.

I see nothing objectionable about having a panic room. If it's needed, it's there; if it isn't needed, no harm.

Considering that a would-be assassin almost murdered one U.S. Senator (Steve Scalise) and tried for two others (Jeff Flake and Rand Paul) in the same "incident" ... I don't believe anyone ought to say that such a thing would never be needed by a controversial business executive.

UPDATE: It happens. Exxon executive Sidney Reso is kidnapped and murdered.

Now ... is the panic room a Chekhov's Gun? Will Miss Amber need it?

And isn't Amber going to ask her executive assistant what her name is?

In a world where the Sisterhood exists everyone not affiliated with them would need a panic room.

Could you imagine living in a world where you can be freely attacked by rampaging misandrists on motorcycles wielding chainsaws, just for being a man or as we see here, just for making a lot of money?

Tats is making me root for the Empire again!

It's Tats. If he ends up giving the executive assistant a name by next week, I'll eat a hat.

For now, I'd call her Naomi.

While funny, I'm not quite sure what this comic is going for. Does Tats think the rich and famous are really at THAT much risk of assassination?

I mean, are they? It's not quite THAT bad yet in America, I hope? grin

[up] Not yet. I've heard and read things about Italy, though, regarding kidnapping people for ransom. I believe the term is sequestro ...

(In particular, the people from whom I bought my house had a nephew who visited Italy as a tourist and was kidnapped for ransom. The kidnappers extorted about $500K from his extended family. They released him; I don't know whether they were ever caught.)

[up]Yes, "sequestro" is the right term. "Rapimento" works just as well.

You know, while I can safely say that most of the 1% can eat the contents of my septic tank, I feel I can also say that I'd prefer them over most any revolution you'd support Tats. Pretty certain no sane country in the world wants a repeat of the Great Leap Forward.

Three trademark violations in one strip!

(Reportedly Tats threatened to sue another cartoonist for plagiarism a few years ago when the guy drew a few strips that were very mid parodies of Sinfest. Go figure.)

Critical Research Failure here because Scooby Doo cartoons haven't be shown in quite a while on Cartoon Network. You can see them on Boomerang currently.

You know, this COULD have been a funny comic in old sinfest. Now? It's just "crap the patriarchy feeds to the masses to give them revolution lite - panem et circenses."

...aaaand it's time for another Silly Fact by Uncle Alarkhar! Here in Italy there's a comic artist/writer, name of Luca Enoch. He's got a pretty good, cartoonish style, and his plots are usually decent. BUT... he grew up in the Age of Protesting (that'd be 1968, for non-Italians) and he's STILL firmly convinced that things haven't changed a bit, so EVERY one of his "good" character listens to indie, done-by-tiny-groups-you-never-heard-of music, does "alternative" art and "fights the power" in ridiculous ways nobody should give a damn about, every "mook level" bad guy is a drooling idiot and ALL the autority figures (except, usually, a single black cop) are autoritarian psychos that display clear admiration for the nazi ideals or simply enjoy giving "beat the crap out of people" orders - amd, of course, every single hard "ch" (as in "chiesa", you know) becomes "k" because that's what "the young people do". Basically, he's an old fogey that thinks he's still a cutting edge revolutionary, and works on ideals that were out of date a long time ago - and he still sells because he does good art and there's still enough nostalgic people that gobble up his crap. And he's still better than Tats will ever be.

America DOES have a problem with income inequality, though. While Tats' flavor of revolution may not be the answer, it does not mean the problem is not there.

Take that recent report on Trump's tax evasion schemes. Putting aside just who it was about, that report speaks to just how widespread and deeply rooted tax evasion is among the super-wealthy. They are practically a new aristocratic class, willing to go to any lenghts to keep their wealth in the family.

It is especially galling when put next to the American deficit. If all those rich families just paid their taxes, there wouldn't even BE a deficit. And then America could have an actual functional health care system, like a decent developed country, and give people a decent minimum wage.

Another part of the crypto-aristocracy in America is that they are basically running the country, buying into politics and lobbying for their benefit, not for the benefit of the general population. That is where democracy starts to look a lot like a plutocracy, a nation ruled by the rich. So yes, I definitely think Tats has a point here.

Optimism is a duty.

[up] Tats isn't making a point here. You think he is because you apply what you see to your own preconceptions about America.

Tax evasion by the very wealthy is a world wide problem. Remember the "letter box firm" thing that's been going on in the Netherlands for a while now and the government being very slow to do something about it when the EU called them on it? Or the Prime Minister who had decided by himself (of course DEFINITELY NOT being influenced by large corporations) to cut 3 billion worth of tax for foreign stockholders in some misguided attempt to lure foreign corporations into the country?

Tats's comic is so generic, so devoid of actual criticism that you could put the Prime Minister of your own country there and it would still work.

I find this whole comic pretty cringe worthy because of this.

Also: Tats has drawn every black person either as an innocent guy being shot by the white man or as some sort of revolutionary fighting for the Revolution, whatever that may be.

I think that when you're an adult Asian man drawing Scooby fucking Doo shouting "fight the power" with a blackwashed Shaggy next to him it's time to reevaluate your life.

[up]Pretty much for the best really. Tats screws up horribly on Domestic Issues, do we really want him discussing issues in other countries?

Plus, even if he did, it's not like he'll ever be able to talk about issues that would ensure he would actually have a good point. Such as the women's rights abuses in a big chunk of the Middle East. His "allies" would tear him apart for racism.

I would ask why they'd think that would be "racist", but I assume it is some nonsensical reason?
