Exception is a Netflix exclusive sci-fi anime mini-series that just released a few days ago.

I finished it in one evening - it only has 8 episodes - And it wasn't too bad. The anime focuses mostly upon philosophical questions, such as the sanctity of life, whether or not a clone in both body and mind has the same rights as the original, or whether or not to terraform a planet that already has living (albeit non-sentient) lifeforms. Don't go in expecting a horror series though, that element exists only in the first three episodes, and just barely.

And I gotta give props to the art aesthetic: even as bizarre as the terraformer vessel's lionfish-like design and equipment is, it's both stunning and elegant. Pretty sure there's a thematic reasoning/metaphor behind it, but what exactly is beyond me.

The anime's iffy with the hardness of it's sci-fi though, and gets just a wee bit inconsistent with its own story and characterization towards the end. On one hand, the creators did some homework on the basics of planetary terraforming and just how long it would take to cross massive distances between solar systems in space, but on the other hand, the very existence of "Misfit" Lewis is just all sorts of incorrect. The writers clearly went the Godzilla route in assuming that radiation exposure would create super mutant monsters instead of misshapen human tumors that are in perpetual agony until they die. Granted, the latter possibility does get addressed later in series, but it's still, it's jarring.

Worth mentioning that the art designer is Yoshitaka Amano, who’s been stuff like Gatchaman and Tekkaman as well as being an illustrator for Final Fantasy.

I believe the spaceship is the studio's take on coelacanths.

"It was long supposed that coelacanths became extinct about 66 million years ago, but in 1938 a living member (Latimeria chalumnae) was netted in the Indian Ocean near the southern coast of Africa. Rewards were offered for more specimens, and in 1952 a second (named Malania anjouanae but not separable from Latimeria) was obtained near the Comoros Islands. Numerous others have been caught in that area. It was later discovered that these fishes were well known to the islanders, who considered the flesh edible when dried and salted; the rough scales were used as an abrasive.

A second species of Latimeria was discovered in Indonesia in 1998. Known commonly as the Sulawesi coelacanth, its scientific name, L. menadoensis, derives from the island of Manado Tua, from which it was collected.

Both species are considered threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the African coelacanth being classified as a critically endangered species and the Sulawesi coelacanth being classified as a vulnerable species." — https://www.britannica.com/animal/coelacanth

I just finished watching this last night, and I rather enjoyed it! ^_^

It wasn't at all what I was expecting—I didn't realise that the story would be so philosophical; in this case, I'm glad to have been wrong. ^_^

... but on the other hand, the very existence of "Misfit" Lewis is just all sorts of incorrect. The writers clearly went the Godzilla route in assuming that radiation exposure would create super mutant monsters ...

I'm not sure: "Misprint Lewis" was the result of an issue with a very advanced bio-printer, prompted by a solar flare.

It may well be that his form wasn't the result of radiation causing unintended-but-natural cell-growth, but rather of radiation (perhaps EMP specifically) causing the bio-printer itself to mis-print. (Or at least, that I think was my understanding when watching.)
