arishipshape's Test

The Muk looks a bit startled and trying to get their bearings after being released but then hears Cortez.

Muk: <Uh, hey. Thanks for that... I'm fine now, yeah.>

Silversmith pulled out his personal pokedex and a pen from his backpack, and began writing the entry on Muk.

Silversmith: "Heavy, do not attempt to lift. Toxic smell, solution on to-do list. Exact potency of poison to be determined."

Cortez: <Fantastic! I'm Cortez, and this is my, I mean, our trainer, Jackson! He's a blacksmithing apprentice!>

Armando: <He's a bit of an idiot in my opinion. He knows all about evil, and does nothing about it!>

Cortez: <That's Armando. He's the team cynic. Keeps babbling about the worlds problems.>

Armando: <Babble? How dare you! I've seen—>

Cortez: <Yea yea, the "I've seen stuff that would turn your insides to butter" tirade. Anyways, Jackson is considering naming you Silver Bullet. Goes with his last name, Silversmith, and destroys fairies, which I imagine you do well. What do you think of that?>

Silversmith finished writing.

Silversmith: "Give him a chance to talk guys."

Arishipshape's Test, Accumula Town

The Muk listened in, seeming to have... opinions about Armando but would rather keep it to themselves.

Upon hearing the name suggestion, they think and give a half-shrug.

MukSilver Bullet: <Works for me, and sounds kinda cool too.>

Armando is a flawed character. I look forward to developing him. However, I've never written competent character development before. Do you have any tips for me?

Accumula town

Cortez looked at silversmith and nodded.

Silversmith: "I'll take that as a yes! Welcome aboard, Silver Bullet! I would shake your hand, but... wait a second... I left the escape rope in the ocean! Littering decreases the value of the world for all who inhabit it! Noooo! It will be long gone now..."

Armando: <On a scale of cosmic horror of one to ten, that ranks about a one.>

Cortez: <Small evils lead to bigger ones. Imagine some aquatic pokemon runs into it, and gets tangled. What then? Stop being so callous.>

Silversmith: "I best be headed home. Let us exit. I wonder what my father will think of a Muk in the house... crud."

Cortez turned towards Silver Bullet

Cortez: <I look forward to less pessimistic conversation. Say, do you by chance play chess?>

You're cool, he seems nice, that was just an in character 'I dunno about this guy' kinda reaction

Also, sorry, thought I posted this earlier but apparently not

Silver Bullet: <Well, maybe someone'll find it on the beach and make use of it.>

Hmmm. My goal actually was to create a flawed character, a little prejudiced, a little too cynical, a tad traumatized, a little full of himself. Cortez ain't no psychologist, and Armando doesn't have anyone else to talk to (until now). To be fair, he also is a bit of an anchor on the rest of the character's lighthearted tendencies (I.E. telling Silversmith to shut up and save Muk). What do you think? Is this idea doomed from the start (flashing back to the tone essay)? How might I make a character arc that fits within WAAPT continuity? Again, I'm completely fine with getting rid of it. Also, you might not be the person to ask. I might have to *gasp* learn from experience!

Absolutely no problem. I'm incredibly grateful that this test is even occurring. Take all the time you need. Did I ever say thank you? Thank you. It feels weird receiving apologies from you guys. It's like King Arthur is five minutes late to lunch with me, and he apologizes. It's King Arthur!

Accumula town

Cortez: <That's the attitude to have! Chess is quite fun! You get to maneuver your army in an epic struggle to trap the foe's king! Here, I'll show you!>

Cortez leaped over to Silversmith's backpack (which was still on his back) and attempted to open it.

Silversmith: "What are you doing?!"

Armando: <Calm down. What if Silver Bullet doesn't even like chess? And what if poison corrodes the wood?>

Cortez paused.

Cortez: <Then we will just have to use the glass set at home!>

Silversmith: "Get off me!"

Silversmith shook Cortez off his back.

Silversmith: "Sometimes I wonder about you..."

Armando: <That makes two of us.>

Cortez began running, or perhaps hopping home, which was quite close. Armando did as close to a facepalm as he could with no limbs.

Silversmith: "Guess we're headed back. Follow, comrades! A saved life far outweighs a single littered rope. Truly, good has been done today."

Oh, nah, you're fine, it sounds like you've got a pretty good plan for him, don't worry. This is basically just 'newbie's trying to figure out his place in the group' on my end. And I still feel like I'm just a person so it's good to hold myself to appropriate standards!

arishipshape's Test, Accumula Town

Silver Bullet: <I *should* be able to hold that stuff fine, long as it's not supposed to be alive, but if you wanna keep it clean or something, that's a taller order.>

<Though... on the note of your house, if you're worried about a wood set, how worried are you about me being going in there?>

One of the things that made King Arthur great was that, if lunch meetings were a thing back then, he would have apologized to the lowliest peasant if he were late.

Accumula town

Armando: <Thank you. Of all the problems here I missed the most obvious.>

Cortez hit the brakes.

Cortez: <Just let me have this moment! A new teammate! A new ally! Someone worse than me at chess!>

Armando: <And you call me the jerk.>

Silversmith: "Why did you stop, Cortez?''

Cortez held up a single finger/appendage/thing and closed his eyes.

Armando: <...>

Cortez: <Ok, moment's gone. You've got a point, Silver Bullet. Actually, that's kind of a mouthful, how about Bullet for short?>

Armando: <Guess you're gonna have to sit around in your pokeball all day.>

Cortez: <Nah, Jackson's at the library reading with Armando halve the time. You can hang out with me outside!>

Silversmith: "Note to self: Plan trip to Castelia to hire translator for temporary service."

Ahhh, that makes sense honestly!

Accumula Town

Silver Bullet blinks at the comment about 'someone worse at me than chess' but says nothing.

Bullet: <Bullet's fine too, yeah. Could be Silver but that might get some confusion with our trainer, huh?>

<But, well, glad we can hang out at least. The ball's nice enough but there's only so long you can be alone for.>

Silversmith: "Well, if you guys are gonna insist on sitting here chatting for the next few hours, I'm gonna read about the reasoning behind identity."

That wasn't me complaining about the events currently happening. That was how I believe the character would react. I figured I should clarify, as I am a noob.

Silversmith pulled out a large library book and sat down to read.

Cortez: <Ah ha!>

Cortez grabbed the backpack now lying on the floor and opened it, removing the disorganized chess set from it.

Silversmith: "So that's what you wanted."

Armando: <Don't tell him about the poisoned pawn!>

Cortez: <The what?>

Armando: <You know, the pawn on column B. It's called the poisoned pawn because—>

Cortez: <Ha ha. Ok Bullet, here's how this game works. You start with your pieces and...>

Cortez trailed off into a glorious explanation of the rules and inner workings of chess.

Unfortunately, due to my humanity, I must go AFK for the next 7 or 8 hours. Darn dependency on sleep... Also, I totally know how chess works, and am simply copping out the explanation for those that don't care about the particulars. If I wanted to rant about how the poisoned pawn worked I could go to a chess forum or something.

Corvus Atrox: Actually, the reason I was so specific is because... Well, "white" is actually a good summary. I'm just needlessly specific. The appearance and ethnicity sections are self-inserts, actually. Should I change it to something less pointlessly precise?

Simpler would be better in this specific case yes. For some other ethnicities you'd want to go more precise but not here.

Bullet: <Uh huh... Maybe I should play a game to learn how it goes. I can learn why that pawn's poisonous later.>

My test, Accumula town

Cortez: <Good idea. Most newbies don't fall for the poisoned pawn anyways.>

Cortez set up the game, and made the first move, hastily explaining that pawns can move 2 spaces if on the second row. Meanwhile, Silversmith had begun quietly narrating to himself.

Silversmith: "Should you have the misfortune to have a Zoroark, Ditto, or heaven forbid, the mythical Mew masquerade as you, what would make you the original? It is this question I hope to answer in this book."

Armando noticed the introduction, and looked over Silversmith's shoulder as he read.

Silversmith: "Oh, hi. Could you remind me to purchase clothespins when we make our weekly visit to Castelia?"

Armando: <Sure. I'll light them on fire if you forget.>

Silversmith: "That sounded affirmative! Thanks!"

Armando: <No, wait, I was being sarcastic!>

Silversmith was already engrossed in his book. Cortez had overheard, and tore his eyes away from the game before him.

Cortez: <I'll remind him. I mean, it's not like you would remember, lacking a nose and all.>

Cortez winced at his insensitivity and turned back to Bullet.

Cortez: <... That sounded better in my head. No offense intended. Your turn...>

I'll say that you're doing pretty well on your test, only problem I've seen you corrected quickly. I'm prepared to try playing out a whole chess match as bad as I am at it but heads up unless you wanna play it the whole way through your test probably won't be that long

Bullet takes in the rules, considers for a bit, and ends up moving the fifth pawn forward two spaces.

If you wanted to play the whole match and speed it up a bit, we could play online at chess.com or something, and I could post the moves as having occurred between the pokemon. I doubt thats ever been done in WAAPT before! I would bring something original! WOO HOO! I'll be online pretty much all day if you want to do that. If you don't, we can just sum up early game, mid game, and end game. Anything works for me.

My test, Accumula town

Cortez: <Ahhh, the queenside pawn gambit! A classic! You catch on quickly.>

Cortez moves his knight to C3, so as to protect his now vulnerable pawn.

Arishipshape, some of our members are a little uncomfortable with the King Arthur comparisons and such, just so we're all clear, none of us are legendary heroes of myth or anything. It isn't necessary to hero worship us to join the RP; we're all just roleplayers like yourself trying to have a good time.

I apologize. I didn't consider that. I was trying to, relatively sarcastically, demonstrate respect for one of the longest running RPG's on the T Vtropes forums, and acknowledge my own inexperience at writing or roleplaying. The gap between kings and peasants was the first thing that came to mind. I'll stop. *Reads my posts* *winces*

The character Silver Bullet will now be written by yours truly. Also, sorry this post didn't have more pokemon substance. Not much pokemoning to be had here. I'll have them exit shortly. The chess game mentioned above didn't actually finish due to a rogue blitz clock, so I wont post the moves.

Silversmith: "What have you got your imposter doesn't? 2 things give you the edge. Your soul, and your actions. Barring time travel shenanigans, your actions remain set in stone, unalterable and undoable by your imposter."

Silver Bullet advanced his pawns in such a way that they created a giant horizontal wall, whilst Cortez advanced his knights and bishops.

Bullet: <So all these pawns will be hard to get past, right?>

Cortez: <Not necessarily. Notice this one is unguarded. I can take it for free, like so.>

Cortez captured one of Silver Bullet's pawns.

Bullet: <I see. Was that the poison pawn then?>

Cortez: <No, that's an entirely different concept. Basically, if you use 3 moves to take a free pawn, but your foe assembles his forces while you waste time taking the pawn, you will lose. Thus, taking the pawn is like taking a poisoned—I mean leech seeded bait.>

Bullet shrugged and made his next move.

Silversmith: "This point is further made by the methods through which you convince your allies of your legitimacy. For instance, questions like "What did I say to you on this important day?", or "What did you do at X event?" help you to find the original. However..."

Cortez: <Notice a rook is slightly more valuable than a knight. Thus, though I sacrifice my knight, I take this rook confident that it's worth it.>

Bullet nodded and took the knight.

Silversmith: "Memories can be altered, or erased entirely. Thus, they are unreliable indicators of the true original. Because of this, you cannot even be sure that you are the original! Unless..."

Bullet: <Seems I'm forced to choose between my King and my Knight.>

Cortez: <Or you could take a third option. You could block the check, like so.>

Cortez moved Bullet's queen, intervening with the checking rook.

Silversmith: "The essence of individuality lies within each individual. A combination of body, mind, and soul makes up each person. An identity thief may be able to mimic the body, but would still lack the combination of mind and soul unique to each person. Identifying that is the tricky..."

Cortez: <Checkmate!>

Bullet: <Good game. I imagine I would enjoy it more if I understood better...>

Cortez: <You'll get the hang of it! You were faster than I was! Hey Jackson! I won at chess!>

Hearing the commotion, Silversmith set his book down and observed the game.

Silversmith: "Congrats. It's getting late, and I'm getting hungry. I recall reading some stories about pokemon that didn't like pokeballs? Silver Bullet, are you one of them?"

Bullet: <Nah.>

Cortez shook his head.

Silversmith: "Alright. Let's go."

Armando: <Go? We were just getting to the good part! The part about why impersonation was evil!>

Silversmith: "This has dragged on long enough. Besides, I've got leftovers with my name on them. I wonder what Muks eat... I best look into it."

Silversmith withdrew Silver Bullet, wiped the used chess pieces on the grass, and walked home.
