Final Installment: The Dub

Before we begin, I notice that someone flagged a few of my entries, and I honestly can\'t fathom why.

I recently watched the dub of the anime and decided to revisit it, since I\'ve had time to reconsider my opinion on it.

Let\'s begin with what hasn\'t changed from the Japanese version. The art is still rather subpar, even though some of the more embarrassing mistakes have been fixed. The fight scenes still have mostly lackluster choreography. The anime still tries to fit a 100-hour RPG into 26 episodes and two OVA specials.

That said, the dub does improve on a few aspects. Ren actually has something of a personality and emotional range, often snarking in funny moments and showing more feeling in serious ones. Part of this is possibly due to the script; while the subtitles seem to have a mostly literal translation of the script, the scriptwriters for the dub occasionally added their own flair, which made the dialogue more enjoyable to hear. Because of that, I found Ren more likeable and engaging in the dub than in the sub.

Of course, I\'ve also had time to reconsider my opinion. While most of the anime episodes were somewhat disappointing the first time, I went into the dub with lowered expectations, and managed to enjoy it more, particularly the parts that improved upon the game (e.g. Episode 20). All in all, the dub was an enjoyable experience, albeit partly due to low expectations.

Persona 5: The Animation is no substitute for playing either version of the game, and there are many aspects of the adaptation that could have been done better. Despite that, it can be fun for fans of the game, or a way for people without much time to enjoy the basic storyline. If you\'re either of those groups, as well as open-minded and willing to not set your expectations too high, I\'d recommend the dub.
