Our final opponent for the Den Battle Tournament is the electric Navi Sparkman. This scenario opens with Lan getting an email ad from Jomon Electric advertising free PET tune-ups in front of the Den Dome. It’s not just spam, as there is indeed an employee of Jomon Electric hanging out in front of the venue outside. As promised the young man tunes up Lan’s PET and departs, dropping a piece of paper as he does, which Lan picks up to find that a code of some sort is written on it. He then asks Megaman how he’s feeling, and he replies that he’s fine, but suddenly notices that something’s wrong with the chip folder. The Extra Folder –Folder has been added to the PET, and it’s been locked in so that we can’t unequip it. Its makeup is a lot like the base starting folder, but since it can’t be edited it’s pretty crappy. Lan and Megaman decide that they have to find someone who can fix their PET, and it’s pretty obvious which of the three plots that I laid out before that this scenario falls into.

Since the saboteur came from Jomon Electric, it only makes sense to go there. There we can find an old man in front of the store who’s willing to help – and he actually turns out to be the owner, Jomon himself. After examining the PET he finds the device that’s locking down the folder, but it can’t just be removed since doing so will fry the PET. Instead we have to input a seven-digit code, the hints to which turn out to be written down on the paper that Lan found. The code and hints are randomly generated I believe, and they just involve going around and counting objects in the real world and Cyberworld or solving simple problems. Mine is as follows:

  • Number of Programs in the LCD Computer (9)
  • 15 + 2 + 3 – 14 = ? (6)
  • Number of hotdogs (5)
  • Number of Net Dealers in Town Area (1)
  • How many streets radiate from the square in ACDC 2? (3)
  • Number of Navis in Elec Tower Computer right now (4)
  • Number of trees visible in ACDC Town (5)

However, since Jomon tells you how many digits you got correct after each attempt it’s entirely possible to brute-force the code without having to run all over. Once the lock’s off Jomon asks Lan if he’s going to battle Sparkman, and once hearing that he is asks him to kick his ass. Can do.

Back at the arena we learn that the guy who sabotaged the PET is indeed Sparkman’s operator, Terry. Welp, as promised it’s asskicking time.

Sparkman

HP: 600

Element: Elec

Attacks:

  • Spark Ball – Sparkman sends a floating mine down one row that explodes in an X pattern once it nears Megaman for 20 Elec damage.
  • Spark Wave – Sparkman sends a wave of electricity down the field in an oscillating pattern for 20 Elec damage.
  • Shadow Maker – Sparkman generates a blinding flash of light that causes Megaman’s shadow to appear behind him and slash him with a Sword for 20 damage.

Like the last Elec Navi we fought, Flashman, Sparkman has a somewhat unusual movement pattern in that he’ll be off of the screen entirely for seconds at a time. He can be pretty difficult to hit because of this, and Spark Ball doesn’t help either since the mine can end up inadvertently blocking attacks. The current chip selection makes this a pretty slow battle.

Terry decides to put all the blame for his loss on Sparkman, and ends up getting outed as the grandson of Jomon. Jomon, however, is disgusted by the behavior that Terry’s been displaying, not to mention he knew right away that he was behind the PET sabotage. So he disowns the kid on the spot.

Since that was the final round of the tournament, we’re treated to a quick scene of Lan being presented with the trophy. One down, two to go.

Following is a quick scene at NAXA of Dr. Regal apparently discovering something about the asteroid, just to remind everyone that it’s still a thing.

I do find it strange that the tournaments don't present you with some sort of reward, outside of what you gain from the Navi battles and preceding wild goose chases anyway. If they had given you something for them, it might have helped the tournament pretense be less blatant padding.

Very slightly less blatant.

As a minor gripe, you can't actually talk to the old man in front of Jomon Electric until you talk to another guy who tells you that the old man in front of Jomon Electric can help you.
