Chapter 26: Tricks and Toxins

{Still in the fence Maze, Yellow continues on, finding a strange sign pointing out a hidden Calcium}

Jr. Trainer f: My cute Pokemon wish to make your acquaintance.

{Her cute pokemon are level 27 Pidgey, Meowth, Pidgey, and Pidgeotto.{

Jr. Trainer f: Wow! You totally won! You have to make Pokemon fight to toughen them up.

Jr. Trainer f: Wow! Your Badges are too cool!

{She uses two Lv 30 Poliwag}

Jr. Trainer f: Not enough! You got those badges from Gym Leaders. I know!

Beauty: Do you want to Pokemon with me?

{She uses Lv 29 Clefairy and Meowth.}

Beauty: It's over already? I don't know anything about Pokemon. I just like cool ones!

Beauty: Sure, I'll play with you!

{She uses Lv 27 Rattata, Vulpix, and Rattata. Lumina grows to level 36.}

Beauty: Oh! You little Brute! I wonder which is stronger, male or female Pokemon?

Yellow:... I doubt there's much of a difference. Charles, it's your turn as leader again.

Lumina: Good. I'm out of energy for Thunderbolt.

  • Silence Bridge

Jr. Trainer f: I'm told I'm good for a kid!

{She uses a team of five: Lv 24 Pidgey, Meowth, Rattata, Pidgey, and Meowth.}

Jr. Trainer f: Ohh! I lost! I want to become a good trainer. I'll train hard.

Bird Keeper: My bird Pokemon want to scrap!

{He has Lv 29 Pidgey and Pidgeotto. Charles grows to level 36}

Bird Keeper: My bird combo lost? My pokemon look happy even though they lost.

Yellow: I think that's enough training here for now. Come on, Flarer. It's time we went back to Fushcia.

Flarer: Alright! time for some real fights!

  • Fushcia City Pokemon Gym // Leader Koga // The Poisonous Ninja Master

Gym Guy: Yo, champ in making! Fuchsia Gym is riddled with invisible walls! Koga might appear close, but he's blocked off! You have to find gaps in the walls to reach him!

Yellow: (As expected, Purple won here already. Well, to fight poison types, I'll need a Psychic. Also, Fire would help against poisonous plants and bugs.}

  • Battle Team changed:
    • Leviat the Gyarados, Lv 34
    • Urbeth the Vulpix, Lv 35
    • Lumina the Pikachu, Lv 36
    • Charles the Kadabra, Lv 36
    • Jolt the Jolteon, Lv 36
    • Flarer the Charizard, Lv 36

Juggler: Let's see you beat my special techniques!

{The Juggler starts with Lv 34 Drowzee. Leviat goes in for a Bite, but then must endure Psychic assault. But a second Bite finishes the tapir-creature off. The Juggler follows up with Kadabra, which strikes first with a critical confusion. But it barely withstands Leviat's bite, and can't recover fast enough to win.}

Juggler: You had me fooled! I like poison and sleep techniques, as they linger after battle!

Yellow: (I guess Drowzee had those. I'd better keep Leviat and Jolt ready for any Psychic types.)

Juggler: Strength isn't the key for Pokemon! It's strategy!

Yellow: Right. You need to Strategize which of your Strongest moves would be best for the situation!

Juggler: I'll show you how Strategy can beat brute strength!

{This Juggler uses a single Lv 38 Hypno. Leviat attacks with Surf, which Hypno forces through with a Headbutt. Leviat then tests out Bite, while Hypno strikes with Confusion. Then it's Dragon Rage versus Headbutt. Hypno is finally defeated by a second Bite, and Leviat grows to level 35.}

Leviat: ''There was no strategy in that match! Boast only when you can back it up, like me!

Juggler: What? Extraordinary! So, you mix Brawn with brains? Good strategy!

Yellow: It's your turn to lead, Urbeth.

Urbeth. You won't be disappointed.

Juggler: I wanted to become a ninja, so I joined this Gym!

{He starts with level 31 Drowzee. A fast Flamethrower from Urbeth lands a critical hit, and Drowzee's Poison gas blows away. A quick attack ends the first match in Yellow's favor, but Juggler has a second Drowzee ready for action. This one matches Flamethrower with Confusion, but can't withstand a second hit. Next is a Kadabra. Urbeth Tries a Confuse ray, but is struk down by a critical Psybeam first. Leviat comes in raging, and Juggler switches in a third Drowzee to take a critical Bite attack. But this isn't enough to matter, as Kadabra must come back out immediately anyway. Kadabra gambles on Disable, but the move fails completely and it falls to one attack.}

Juggler: I'm done for! I will keep on training under Koga, my ninja master!

{One trip to the Pokemon Center later,}

Tamer: I also study the way of the ninja with master Koga! Ninja have a long history of using animals!

{He leads off with a level 33 Arbok. Urbeth strikes first with Flamethrower, and Arbok only retaliates with Poison Sting, failing to actually inject any. Another flamethrower finishes the first match. The Tamer brings in Sandslash next, And Leviat takes the field to counter, washing the opponent away with Surf. Tamer has a second Arbok in reserve, which catches Urbeth on the switch with a paralyzing Glare. Urbeth manages to follow through with her Flamethrower, though. Next, Arbok leers, but this gives Urbeth the opening she needs for a finishing blast.}

Tamer: Awoo! I still have much to learn!

Tamer: Stop right there! Our invisible walls have you frustrated?

{This Tamer starts with Lv 34 Sandslash. Leviat takes the field from Urbeth, but is hit by Poison Sting on the switch. Fortunately for Yellow, Leviat is barely scratched and easily wins. Urbeth Grows to level 36 from watching. Leviat stays in to take on the Tamer's reserve Arbok, but again wins easily.}

Tamer: Whoa! He's got it! You impressed me! Here's a hint! look very closely for gaps in the invisible walls!

Yellow: (I've picked up a better tell. The green stripes on the floor are interrupted by the walls for some reason.)

Juggler: Master Koga comes from a long line of ninjas! What did you descend from?

Yellow: ...Honestly, I never thought to ask.

{This Juggler uses Lv 34 Drowzee and Hypno. But despite his switching, Leviat and Jolt easily take them both out. Leviat grows to level 36}

Yellow: (He doesn't have the timing down. You need to switch while the opponent is sending out a new pokemon, otherwise, they get a free hit.)

Juggler: Dropped my balls!

Jolt: I gotta say, Pin Missile is a bit of a letdown. But with a little luck, it can be good.

Juggler: Where there is light, there is shadow! Light and shadow! Which do you choose?

Yellow: Well, I've never seen a reason to side with evil, but that may not be the "Shadow" you mean.

Lumina: I'll continue to rely on my lightning, but that might not be the "Light" he means...

{That was the last Gym Trainer. All that remains is to fight the Leader.}

Koga: Fwahahaha! A mere child like you dares to challenge me?

Yellow: That's right. I'm ready for your tricks.

Koga: Very well, I shall show you true terror as a ninja master! You shall feel the despair of poison and sleep techniques!

===Battle Start: Versus Leader Koga===

{Koga has 4 Pokemon. He starts with a level 44 Venonat.}

Yellow: Thought so. Urbeth, Burn!

{Round 1: Urbeth strikes first with Flamethrower. Venonat is very vulnerable, but holds on to retaliate with Psychic. Urbeth's special stat falls. Hp: 64/88 vs 1%}

Yellow: Quick attack!

{Round 2: That's enough to finish off Venonat.}

Yellow: Level advantage and neutral effectiveness moves aren't always enough.

Koga: You have speed. But, can you defeat a second Venonat? (Lv 46)

Yellow: Urbeth, you need time out for your mind to recover. Flarer is my next battler. (Lv 36)

Urbeth: T-thank you...

Flarer: Heh. About time I got to show off again.

{Round 3: Flarer blows Embers, Venonat uses a Supersonic attack to confuse him. Hp 110/110 vs 45%}

Yellow: (It's a risk, but...) Ember again!

{Round 4: Flarer manages to attack normally and defeat Venonat.}

Koga: You have a firm grasp of tactics, but I must admit, I have staggered My pokemon's strength. My next Venonat is even more powerful. (Lv 48)

Yellow: Flarer, I'm returning you while you clear your head. Charles, this is your fight! (Lv 36)

{Round 5: Charles uses Psybeam for a powerful strike. Venonat uses a surprisingly powerful physical move: Double Edge, to strike back almost as hard. But Venonat ends up defeating itself with the recoil. Hp 18/83 vs 0%}

Koga: Now, my last Pokemon is even more experienced, but more importantly, I have not held it back from it's true power, like the others!

Yellow: You mean... it's Venomoth?

Koga: Indeed! (Lv 50)

Yellow: Urbeth, it's your move again! Confuse ray!

{Round 6: Venomoth is faster and uses Double Team, but is then hit by Confuse Ray. Hp 64/88 vs 100%}

Yellow: We can't give it time to reinforce Double Team! Flamethrower attack!

{Round 7: Venomoth hurts itself in confusion. Urbeth is then able to hit with Flamethrower. Hp 64/88 vs 45%}

Yellow: We know a few tricks of our own.

Koga: (I must prepare for a final chance.)

{Round 8: Koga uses X Attack on Venomoth. Urbeth hits with Flamethrower again. Venomoth barely holds on. Hp 64/88 vs 2%}

Yellow: Don't give it time! Quick attack!

{Round 9: Urbeth's attack misses. Venomoth uses Psychic. Urbeth barely holds on, but her Special has fallen again. Hp 2/88 vs 2%}

Yellow: One last time...!

{Round 10: Urbeth misses with Quick Attack again. However, Venomoth then defeats itself in confusion.}

Yellow: That did it.

Urbeth: It... over...

Lumina: Yes! With luck, we managed a perfect victory!

Koga: Humph! You have proven your worth! Here, take the Soulbadge!

===End Battle===

Koga: Now that you have the Soulbadge, the defense of your Pokemon increases! It also lets you Surf outside of battle! Ah! Take this too! That Tm contains Toxic! It is a secret technique over 400 years old!

Yellow: (Unbelievable... there's no way they had Tms back then.)

Koga: When afflicted by Toxic, Pokemon suffer more and more as battle progresses! It will surely terrorize foes!

Gym Guy: It's amazing how Ninja can terrify even now!
