Chapter 17: Overgrowth

  • Report 7: Alternate Paths
    • Lavender Town

Red Haired Woman: I am a spider, I can climb, I'm a spider, I can climb...

Blue Haired Man: Jessie, do we really need to do this?

{The Rocket duo is climbing up the side of Pokemon Tower on a rope with a grappling hook.}

Red Haired Woman: Of course! We're supposed to help evacuate our people from the top floor, but we can't fight our way through without the Silph Scope. So: we climb up the outside, around the ghosts, let them know about it, then regroup back in Saffron!

Blue Haired Man: I know how it's supposed to work. But why can't we use a helicopter or something?

Red Haired Woman: Three problems with that, James. One, the tower doesn't have enough room to land on. Two, we don't have an airfield nearby. Unph. And three, we're here already!

  • Pokemon Tower Top Floor

{Three Rocket Grunts are arguing with an old man.}

Old Man: Listen, we can't go on like this. I can't calm down Marowak until she hears that you've learned your lesson!

Rocket Grunt 2: All Pokemon exist for the glory of Team Rocket! We won't let some uppity ghost stop us!

{The other Grunts have mixed feelings about the situation. Much as they might try to deny it, it's simply impossible to go down the stairs while a vengeful ghost is haunting them.}

Old Man: If you insist on holding on to that ridiculous untruth, then you'll be joining her soon! Is that what you want?!

{Suddenly, the rocket duo climbs through a window and over several rows of graves. The blus Haired man reinforces the hook while the Red Haired Woman poses.}

Red Haired Woman: The cavalry has arrived! Time for Team Rocket to blast out of he-

{However, the two of them are trampled as the three grunts rush out the window. As the duo gets back up and brushes themselves off, the hook comes undone, whether from James' tinkering being interrupted or from another ghost's trick.}

Blue Haired Man: Aaugh! The rope! We're trapped up here!

Red Haired Woman: Tell me something I don't know...

Old Man: Here we go again...

  • Report end

  • Celadon City Pokemon Center

Yellow: Pikachu, what was that about? I know he was the leader of Team Rocket, but why did you threaten him? We were in the middle of a Pokemon Battle. I didn't need you throwing the other trainer off.

Pikachu: {disheartened expression} It wasn't about that... He was about to do the same thing to us. I think we could have won anyway, whether Gyarados fell under his control or not. But... I couldn't take the risk... If only you could hear...

Yellow: ...I know you'd never do that against an ordinary trainer. But... we don't need to cheat to win against Team Rocket. If he'd pulled a gun or something, I'd understand...

{The two share a long look.}

{Finally, Yellow reaches down to ruffle Pikachu's fur.}

Yellow: Don't do that again.

Pikachu: Hee. I don't believe I'll need to.

Yellow: Well, as long as we're in town, what do you say we challenge Erika? Kadabra and Vulpix still need to catch up, and... I think we need a breather.

  • Celadon Gym: Leader Erika, The Nature-Loving Princess

Yellow: It looks like Purple's been here already again. Fearow and His Vulpix could have handled this place easily.

Lass: Hey! You are not allowed in here!

Yellow: What good is a Pokemon Gym that half of everyone can't challenge?

{The Lass uses Level 23 Bellsprout and Weepinbell. Vulpix is able to beat them with a little item support, growing to level 22.}

Vulpix: These plants are... kind of tricky.

Lass: You're too rough! Bleaah! I hope Erika wipes you out!

Beauty: I was getting bored.

{The Beauty uses Lv 21 Oddish, Bellsprout, Oddish, and Bellsprout. Kadabra takes out the first three to grow to Lv 23, and Vulpix takes out the last one.}

Beauty: My makeup!

{Yellow retreats to heal, then returns to take on the rest of the Gym Trainers.}

Beauty: Look at my Grass Pokemon! They're so easy to raise!

{This Beauty uses two Lv 24 Bellsprout.}

Beauty: No! We only use grass-type Pokemon at our Gym! We also use them for making flower arrangements!

Jr. Trainer: Aren't you the peeping Tom?

{She uses Lv 24 Bulbasaur and Ivysaur. While subbing in for a poisoned Vulpix, Kadabra Gains another Level.}

Jr. Trainer: I'm in shock! Oh, you weren't peeping? We get a lot of gawkers!

{Another retreat to heal and restock, and Yellow is ready to Cut into Erika's inner sanctum.}

Pikachu: Ivysaur, you can see from inside your Pokeball, right?

Ivysaur: Yes.

Pikachu: I suppose this must be hard for you...

Ivysaur: ...No. I'll be fine... I've grown to like this existence.

Lass: Don't bring any bugs or fire Pokemon in here!

Yellow: Sorry, but I intend to win!

{This lass uses Lv 23 Oddish and Gloom. Vulpix grows to Lv 23 during this fight.}

Lass: Oh! You! ...Our leader, Erika, might be quiet, but she's also very skilled!

Cooltrainer: Welcome to Celadon Gym! You better not underestimate girl power!

{The elite uses Lv 24 Weepinbell, Gloom, and Ivysaur; as well as a Hyper Potion to keep Gloom in the fight longer. Vulpix holds out against the first two, but after she grows to Lv 24, Kadabra takes over again.}

Cooltrainer: Oh! Beaten! I didn't bring out my best Pokemon! Wait 'til next time!

Beauty: Pleased to meet you. My hobby is Pokemon Training.

{This Beauty uses a single Lv 26 Exeggcute. Vulpix is in poor condition and poisoned, but still manages to get around Exeggcute's Reflect armor to win.}

Beauty: Oh! Splendid! I have a blind date coming up. I have to learn to be polite.

{In the time it took to fight, the room has grown closed again, so Ivysaur has to Cut an exit again for the final preparations. Finally:}

Erika: Hello. Lovely weather isn't it? It's so pleasant...

Yellow: ...

Erika: ...Oh dear... I must have dozed off. Welcome. My name is Erika. I am the leader of Celadon Gym. I teach the art of flower arranging. My Pokemon are of the grass type.

Yellow: Can we just fight already?

Erika: Oh, I'm sorry, I had no idea that you wished to challenge me. Very well, but I shall not lose.

===Battle Start: Versus Leader Erika===

Erika: Tangela. (Lv 30)

Yellow: Kadabra, take the lead with Confusion. (But I may have miscalculated. Tangela isn't venomous, so Psychic power isn't anything special against it.) (Lv 24)

{Round 1: Tangela strikes back with Vine whip. Hp 42/57 vs 80%}

{Round 2: The pokemon trade the same blows as last time. HP 25/57 vs 60%}

{Round 3: After being hit again, Tangela uses Bind to stop Kadabra's concentration, as well as his movement. HP 18/57 vs 40%}

{Round 4: Tangela keeps squeezing. HP 11/57 vs 40%}

{Round 5: Yellow heals Kadabra. Tangela keeps squeezing. Hp 50/57 vs 40%}

{Round 6: Kadabra breaks free to use Confusion again, muddling Tangela's perceptions. Tangela ends up striking itself. Hp 50/57 vs 5%}

{Round 7: Kadabra strikes Tangela down, and grows to Level 25}

Erika: Weepinbell. (Lv 32)

Yellow: Switch in, Vulpix! Ember! (Lv 24)

{Round 8: Weepinbell sprays acid, melting Vulpix' defense stat. She manages to strike back with mber. HP 32/60 vs 80%}

Yellow: Vulpix, switch out! Kadabra, you're up again. (That should stabilize Vulpix's injuries. Now time to start fighting in earnest.)

{Round 8: Predicting this, Weepinbell strikes with a critical Razor Leaf strike. Hp 12/59 vs 80%}

{Round 9: Yellow heals Kadabra, But Weepinbell keeps sending Razor Leaf flurries. It seems Razor Leaf nearly always lands a critical hit. Hp 21/59 vs 80%}

Yellow: Not good... Switch in, Ivysaur! (Lv 25)

{Round 10: Weepinbell sprays Acid, melting Ivysaur's defenses. Hp 48/71 vs 80%}

{Round 11: Yellow heals Kadabra. Weepinbell sprays more Acid, landing a critical hit and bringing Ivysaur down.}

Ivysaur: This is my current limit. Keep...

Yellow: Kadabra, Confusion attack, quickly!

{Round 12: Kadabra's confusion attack goes critical. Weepinbell barely holds on to blow Sleep Powder, but it disperses too quickly to have an effect. Hp 59/59 vs 1%}

{Round 13: Kadabra finishes off Weepinbell.}

Erika: Gloom. {Lv 32}

Yellow: Hang in there, Kadabra. Confusion.

{Round 14: Kadabra hits hard, But Gloom manages to hit with her sleep powder. Hp 59/59 vs 50%}

{Round 15: Yellow uses an Awakening on Kadabra. Gloom begins a Petal Dance. Hp 32/59 vs 50%}

Yellow: Now's our chance. Confusion!

{Round 16: Gloom survives Confusion to keep thrashing about. Hp 7/59 vs 5%}

{Round 17: Kadabra knocks out Gloom, and grows to Lv 26}

Erika: Oh! I concede defeat. You are remarkably strong. I must confer you the Rainbowbadge.

===Battle End===

Erika: The Rainbowbadge will make Pokemon up to Lv 50 obey.

Pikachu: That's half of the power of the Earthbadge.

Erika: It also allows Pokemon to use Strength in and out of battle. Please also take this with you.

{Yellow obtains a Tm 21 Mega Drain. It's relatively weak, but one of the most useful Grass moves.}

Erika: Half the damage it inflicts is drained to heal your Pokemon!

Yellow: Ivysaur! are you alright?

Ivysaur: I ... r... Saur! Barely. but... I must... Cut!

{Despite being semiconscious at best, Ivysaur is able to Cut a path out of the gym, where Kadabra can teleport them back to a Pokemon Center.}

Yellow: Alright. Now it's time we returned to Lavender Town. Might as well see if Saffron is open yet.

Pikachu: Ah, Saffron is-!

  • Saffron West Guard House

Guard: Whoa, boy! I'm parched!

Yellow: Sounds like you could use this.

{Yellow sets a can of water down on the counter.}

Guard: Huh I can have this? Gee, thanks! ... Glug, glug... (Say, this kid has quite a few badges too. Maybe he'll be okay...) ... Gulp... If you want to go to Saffron City... ... You can go on through. I'll "share this with the other guards!"

Yellow: Um... all right then.

  • Saffron City:

Yellow: Oh my...

{Team Rocket is out in force here, and blocking off many buildings and places, but not all of them}

Pikachu: Yellow... what do we do?
