Name Space: Main
Page Type: trope

A character that Really Gets Around wants to get aroused with some content the person likes, so makes a search and get a material to get aroused. Then suddenly this character discovers the content is Squick, has Jump Scare or is The Reveal that could be is that it was their Parent/Sibling/Close Friend/A Robot and if it was someone of the opposite gender to what they though it was, then it most likely crossovers with Unsettling Gender Reveal. Or even it's something the character dislikes or hates. The case is the content becomes more than just a Fetish Retardant, the character becomes so horrorified with the content that stops with their actions, and in much cases it has to go to therapy. In other cases, the character only turns off and get away of the situation or the scene he/she is involved with.

Sub-Trope of Moment Killer. A Date with Rosie Palms is involved before knowing the truth behind it. Compare Too Much Information and Squick. Contrast Fetish, where a character intentionally looks for something unusual for arousal. Also contrast in the case the character got aroused with the content, anyway. See also Think Unsexy Thoughts.

While I think it's tropable, the name violates No New Stock Phrases (and is a snowclone of I Ate What). I can't think of a good concise name though.

Something along the lines of Anti Fetish Revelation?

^ @ logigmeister - Add that she's his sister, otherwise we don't know why it's Squick.

Apr 4th 2017 at 1:59:36 PM

The problem with the name Unexpected Fetish Reveal is that it can be mistaken for a character surprising another character by telling them about their fetish. Maybe Unwitting Fetish Reveal or Unwitting Fetish Realiization?

Apr 4th 2017 at 7:27:16 PM

Another example for Family Guy.

  • In Season 3 "A Fish out of Water", when Peter and the guys are asking each other if none of them were married and if they could have any woman, who would they want, Quagmire said Taylor Hanson. Joe tells Quagmire Taylor Hanson is a guy, but Quagmire thinks they're joking until Peter backs up Joe's statement. Quagmire was not happy to learn this.
Quagmire: Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God, I can't... Oh, God! I got all these magazines! Oh, God! Oh, God!

Apr 8th 2017 at 8:28:51 AM

It sounds like a title for a newspaper article, like "Local Man Ruins Everything".

Apr 9th 2017 at 2:28:46 AM

So back to "I Jacked off To WHAT"?

Apr 9th 2017 at 6:28:47 AM

^ It'd be better, 'cause "Spank Bank Shame "is more "Shame of masturbation" than "Surprise at what you were masturbating to."

If you really want to keep "Spank Bank" and the alliteration, ... Perhaps end it with "Shock" or "Surprise"?

Apr 14th 2017 at 8:42:54 AM

Okay, the Laconic doesn't really explain the trope:

"The moral of this Trope is that it is probably best to stay off porn "

It leaves the reader wondering why that's the moral. What are the consequences...

"A character is surprised at what they were masturbating to."

Would be the clearest laconic?

May be subverted when the shocked guy ends up just fapping to it anyway after the shocking reveal.

Laconic still explains nothing, as I've said above. Is this Up For Grabs??

This has been abandoned since months, so following the rules I take this as Up For Grabs. Adding the examples and annotations on posts to complete this and eventually launch it

EDIT: ^^^I agree, the laconic should be replaced, but I've no ideas to do that right now, so I hope someone here has a best idea for the laconic

Something like: "A surprise that ruins masturbation"?

Dec 12th 2017 at 10:58:21 AM

Is this NSFW? Either way, bombing.

Dec 12th 2017 at 11:24:35 AM

Counterpoint, we already have a list of Sex Tropes. This is a valid topic as long as it remains strictly NRLEP.

Webcomics:

  • Terminal Lance #141: "Where You Least Expect It". Marine is jerking off to porn on his laptop. Marine sees an EGAnote  tattoo on the male actor's arm. Marine loses boner. (The author explains in The Rant that this is essentially because it feels like jerking off to a family member.)

Dec 12th 2017 at 3:41:50 PM

Hang on, isn't this just Fetish Retardant?

ETA: Though, Fetish Retardant is a YMMV page, not a trope...

Dec 13th 2017 at 2:22:16 AM

Also, Basara? If you're keeping this, kill the Netorare example, it's discussing audience reactions.

Dec 13th 2017 at 7:08:26 AM

^You're right, taking off the example then. Also, could be Fetish Retardant related to this??

Dec 13th 2017 at 9:23:52 AM

TV:

  • In a Castle episode involving a murder in a vampire LARP community, Ryan remarks that he dated a girl once who was into the lifestyle but it didn't work out.

Ryan: Deal-breaker for me? She wanted to have sex in a coffin. I'm open-minded, I'm not that open-minded.

Dec 13th 2017 at 5:07:39 PM

Another potential idea for the trope. Let's make the description less about pr0n specifically (and dump the Example As Thesis while we're at it) and more focused on this suggested Laconic: "Character is aroused by something, but then learns or sees something about it that is an instant arousal killer."

Dec 14th 2017 at 11:36:28 PM

Live Action TV

  • In the Sirens episode "Rachel Mc Adams, Topless", Hank and Johnny are both admitted porn fiends, but when they respond to a call and find a computer playing a sex scene between a woman and a horse, they and Brian all go into a Heroic BSOD.

Dec 15th 2017 at 6:56:22 AM

^^^I like it too. Let me rephrase the description and if there's something to be added/replaced, just let me know.

Also, I liked the Netorare example I made, but I don't know how to rephrase it for the draft (the feeling of being cheated is an arousal killer, no matter how hot the hentai is, and the main reason why that genre is so controversial)

EDIT: Description rephrased, not sure if I did it well, but at least the direct sex references were deleted and now seems more family-friendly compared with the oiriginal one. Feel free to correct it if I did something wrong

I was thinking... since the term doesn't exist actually... why don't just change the name into Arousal Killer?? Since it's the phrase that appears the most on the draft and examples, I guess it's a good choice. What do you think guys??

Dec 20th 2017 at 8:45:06 AM

I think if this is specifically supposed to be in-universe examples of the concept, then it should be In Universe Arousal Killer.

Dec 20th 2017 at 9:10:33 AM

^Sounds too broad, although I agree with looking for a better name. I'm just not sure what to call it. (Oh God What Have I Fapped To, the best I can come up with on Clear Concise Witty, doesn't cut it on SO many levels...)

  • Creepshow 2, segment "The Raft". Two teenagers (a boy and a girl) are trapped on a raft in the middle of a lake by a monster living in the water. While the girl is asleep, the boy starts groping her in a sexual way. The girl turns over, revealing that the monster has seeped through the raft and dissolved part of her face, terrifying the boy.

Dec 21st 2017 at 6:33:43 AM

Looking at the examples, it feels like there are two tropes here. One is horror at an act already committed (which is what the name and description indicate) and another is a character encountering a kink they don't care for. They seem almost entirely disparate.

Dec 21st 2017 at 10:39:35 AM

^Certainly agree there are several examples that don't fit the given definition:

  • Netorare, which additionally I think violates the rules on making an example about a genre or subgenre (besides which, didn't we stop troping actual porn ages ago?)
  • The Sirens example doesn't fit: even with the characters being porn aficionados in general, there can still be porn subgenres they don't like.

Dec 22nd 2017 at 8:38:18 PM

I like Arousal Killer. .

  • The Blob: a teen boy is in a car date with the cute blonde, He puts an arm around her shoulder. When she doesn't react, he goes for the top buttons on her blouse. It's when he reaches inside to touch her breast that she flops over, dead, because the Blob has already eaten the away-facing half of her.

I find the title Arousal Killer confusing, it's very easy to be misread as Aroused Killer, e.g. someone with a murder fetish or something along those lines.

Jan 23rd 2018 at 4:21:49 AM

^It was the title that repeated the most to change the then-actual one (Spank Bank Shock). I still accept new titles to get something better... or maybe I should make a crowner about this

Jan 23rd 2018 at 6:41:39 AM

What about something like Instant Turn Off? The expression "turn-off" is often used in sexual context.

Jan 23rd 2018 at 8:58:28 AM

Boner Killer is one I've seen.

Jan 23rd 2018 at 6:21:57 PM

Why is this showing 10 bombs?

Jan 24th 2018 at 6:12:37 AM

^Yeah, it's like everytime someone adds a hat, a bomb is getting there, too. Maybe if I remake the draft and ditch this, maybe it's a bug or something, I don't know...

I like Instant Turn Off, maybe could be a better name for this. What do you say??

Larkmarn has a point here...

Mar 16th 2018 at 10:13:12 AM

Maybe make a separation here, but I still think it's not enough to make a separate draft, let me see about it

Mar 19th 2018 at 7:16:57 AM

OK, made an additional line about the character just turned off instead just being horiified only, so now both type of examples can be together in the same draft.

Well, now the difference is of 5 hats, maybe this now should be ready to be launched (or should I wait until this get more hats??)
