* BrokenBase:
** Okina Matara being both the FinalBoss and Superboss. Detractors say she's taking up a spot that could have been filled by a new character instead. The others say it's alright because it makes sense in the context of the story, and she has very different patterns in both fights, anyway.
** Reimu no longer having a small hitbox, meaning it's now the same size for all characters. Some dislike the change, believing Reimu was already balanced and the small hitbox, like the homing shots, helped make her the beginner-friendly choice. Others welcome the change, believing the small hitbox upset the games' balance with many bullet patterns accused of being designed around Reimu's hitbox at the expense of other shot types. And then there are those who believe making all player hitboxes the same was necessary, but think it should have been done by shrinking the standard hitbox instead of enlarging Reimu's.
* DisappointingLastLevel: To some fans, Okina showing up as the Superboss was a little uninspiring, and they think that her final fight would be better handled if it was someone else. It doesn't help that her survival spell, the only one of this game, is considered among the worst and weakest survival spells, which leads to a player good enough to get to her fight bored for the duration of it. (Fortunately, there's a bug that allows you to damage the spell with releases, ending it without having to wait out the full duration.)
* GoodBadBugs: During the Extra Boss's survival spell, using a release or a bomb causes the boss to suddenly have a health bar, allowing the player to end the spell quickly by depleting said health bar.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: Though unintentional on ZUN's part, Okina's Final Boss theme sounds very similar to Yukari's, while her Extra Boss theme sounds similar to Kasen's. Befitting because alongside Yukari and Kasen, .
* ThatOneAttack: Shares one page with the franchise's other installments.
* ThatOneBoss: Like other installments, it shares a page with the rest of the series.
* ThatOneLevel: Stage 4. The screen is constantly flooded with very small bullets of varying colors, and the blue ones can be harder to see against the blue background. Enemies appear very quickly, forcing you to pursue and eliminate them as fast as possible to minimize the above problem. To make things worse, there are several sections where waves of enemies get progressively closer to you, until it is inevitable to have them almost at point-blank range.
