* AdaptationDisplacement: Yes, there was a book.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: John Debney's score, with special mention going to the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-p26E_Lz6o music that accompanies the end credits]].
* DontShootTheMessage: Working together regardless of differences is quite a valid Aesop, but more than a few reviewers pointed out how Lucas was taught to conform to the point of not being an individual. Negative reviews went as far as to compare the movie to communist propaganda or a Hezbollah training video. Others have also taken issue at how Lucas is the only character who is fleshed out, informed and goes through a redemption arc about understanding the other, whereas Beals and the bully don't get it and are instead bullied back or crippled for life.
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Fugax. Even the most negative reviews singled out Creator/BruceCampbell for praise regarding his performance.
* FridgeBrilliance: Lucas seems to get SuperStrength and climbing ability for no reason. But if a person were shrunk that small, the SquareCubeLaw would cause him to become proportionally stronger, and he'd probably be able to get his fingers into smaller cracks to climb up seemingly smooth surfaces!
* SugarWiki/FunnyMoments: The auditions for terrified ant #1697 (only seen in the movie's teaser trailer, though).
* HilariousInHindsight: There's a kid wearing a helmet seen in the crowd cheering on the bully who gives Lucas an atomic wedgie. Lucas is voiced by Creator/ZachTylerEisen, and Helmet Boy is voiced by Jake Goldberg. In other words, it's [[WesternAnimation/TheBackyardigans Pablo]] getting bullied by his [[TheOtherDarrin replacement]].
%%* JerkassWoobie: Lucas Nickle. [[EarnYourHappyEnding Thankfully, he got better.]]
* KarmicOverkill: While Beals takes too much joy and pride out of his exterminator job and he tricks Lucas into signing his contract instead of asking his parents, some viewers found his fate of being turned into a deformed freak for the rest of his life a DisproportionateRetribution instead of having a more harmless or humiliating defeat for his smugness. Not helped that he was completely unaware of just how sentient and human ants truly are unlike Lucas.
* MoralEventHorizon: Beals crosses the line between doing his job and outright sadism. He loves killing bugs and he taunts Lucas into signing the contract just so he can kill a bunch of ants.
* NightmareFuel:
** The wasp attack on the caterpillar herd, largely because of the wasps' menacing designs and the (impressively) creepy voice acting behind them (particularly the wasp that stalks Lucas in the grass)
** The frog's stomach scene, along with a healthy amount of MoodDissonance: [[spoiler:BURRRRRP]]
** The mural of the Cloud Breather, which looks utterly ''demonic'' in sharp contrast to the angelic mural of the Ant Mother.
** Beals' KarmicTransformation- which results in him getting [[BodyHorror physically distorted before ending in a short and grotesque appearance]].
* RetroactiveRecognition: Creator/BellaThorne voiced a young ant in the video game.
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks:
** Lucas' bully Sid is [[AdaptationNameChange renamed to Steve]] and his comeuppance of being shrunken by the ants and their shrinking serum was changed to being simply being scared off by Lucas.
** Lucas' design looks nothing like his book counterpart.
