* BrokenBase: The scene in which [[spoiler: a Protestant radical whose son died because of religious violence rapes Mary as revenge]] stirred a lot of controversy. Some fans absolutely despised it, others thought the writers handled it well, and still others believed the aftermath, [[spoiler: Catherine helping Mary snap out of her HeroicBSOD]], was the only good part. Many people insist that there should have been [[spoiler: a trigger warning for it]], but many others disagree. And ''really'' not helping was the show's creator stating that they did it to advance character development for ''Francis'' rather than Mary herself.
* CrossesTheLineTwice: More like pole-vaulting over the line in the Season 3 premiere, where Catherine's double has sex with a monk in a windmill, only to accidentally start it up which causes a saw blade to slice off the poor bastard's erect penis.
* FanNickname: Mary, Teen of Scots.
* GeniusBonus:
** Nostradamus really did serve as Catherine de' Medici's astrologer, and she took his prophecies very seriously. Also, he started out as a physician (and a foresighted one at that, refusing to bleed patients and recommending cremation for the corpses of plague victims), so he probably did know more than your average Jean about poisons and sedatives.
** There are occasional nods to history, such as Catherine's usage of bizarre medicinal treatments to conceive children.
** Also of note is the 'H' and 'D' symbol on the tiles in Henry's bedroom, and the tiles of the throne room, and the 'H' and crescent moon symbol on Henry's banners. In real life, Henry did indeed use the 'HD' or H and crescent moon symbol, the moon and 'D' representing Diane de Poitiers. Several of these symbols survive in the present on chateau in France. Also, the way the 'D' was styled in some cases looked like a 'C' for Catherine.
%%* GrowingTheBeard: "Left Behind".
* HarsherInHindsight:
** Henry accidentally killing his latest fling is played for as much BlackComedy as humanly possible. Then in the very next episode, [[spoiler:it turns out it wasn't so accidental, as he's developed a mental illness that includes murderous episodes.]]
** An episode where Mary and Francis travel to Paris and [[spoiler:are attacked by Protestant radicals who kill Francis]] aired on November 13, 2015, when Paris suffered a devastating series of terrorist attacks.
* HilariousInHindsight: In ''WesternAnimation/DragonsRidersOfBerk'' Adelaide Kane plays Mala, another queen looking for a husband. Except she's also a badass warrior in her own right and only wants one to fulfill a prophecy, leading her to be completely casual about it.
* JustHereForGodzilla: Prior to the show's debut, Kenna's scene in which she masturbates received ''a lot'' of media attention - particularly after it was revealed that The CW had edited it down. Even censored, a lot of people tuned into the first episode just to see what the fuss was about.
* OneSceneWonder:
** Marie, Mary's mother who pops up to make sure Mary gets engaged to Francis and so far is the only character to be able to deal with Catherine on equal terms.
** John Barrowman as the Scottish terrorist Munro, who fancies himself Mary's arch-enemy but only serves as a stepping stone to her regaining her throne.
* ShipToShipCombat: Frary (Francis/Mary) vs. Mabastian (Mary/Sebastian) and Team Pepperpot (Greer/Castleroy) vs Team Greith (Greer/Leith).
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Those interested in the history of France and Scotland's union or 1500's history may be disappointed to know that the show is mostly TeenDrama and romance, which will probably not appeal to history buffs.
* WTHCostumingDepartment:
** A lot of viewers have pointed out that the majority of the costumes worn on the show, though especially Mary and her ladies' outfits, don't look ''remotely'' like actual clothing from 16th century Europe. Many of the dresses are actually quite pretty, but most of them resemble 21st century prom dresses more so than Renaissance fashion. This is probably because most of ''were'' in fact prom dresses; the costume designers later admitted they had a very small budget for the costumes by period piece production standards, and very little time to make them. In order to be productive, they often had to buy formal dresses from various clothing stores and modify them for the show.
** Women are constantly walking around with their heads uncovered and their hair hanging loose, something no woman in that time period would have done as it was considered immodest (save for in certain situations).
