* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler: John killing the demon.]] It's preceded by something just as (or possibly even more) awesome: April [[spoiler: positioning herself between John and a rampaging demon SerialKiller]]. Also qualifies as a SugarWiki/{{Heartwarming Moment|s}} after their being at each others' throats for the whole book. April loves her son, no matter what.
* MoralEventHorizon: Cleaver [[spoiler:attempts to asphyxiate Crowley's wife and knocks her out with a blunt object. It isn't fatal, but he seems to want it to be.]] This trope is then [[LampshadeHanging lampshaded]] in conversation when he calls his therapist.
* {{Narm}}: John Wayne Cleaver? Really, Dan? [[SarcasmMode You couldn't come up with anything obvious?]]
* NightmareFuel:
** The entire first chapter explains exactly how a body is embalmed in a mortuary. And it has no relevance to the plot. It just serves as one long EstablishingCharacterMoment for [[NightmareFetishist John]].
** This whole damn book. Just the style of writing and how the reader gets so engrossed in John's warped mind is almost enough to give someone PTSD.
* SpecialEffectFailure: The ending of the movie when [[spoiler:Crowley’s true form is shown.]]
* SpiritualSuccessor: TheFilmOfTheBook in particular to ''Film/DonnieDarko''. They're both relatively indie supernatural films dealing with a mentally ill protagonist struggling with right and wrong. Both are backed by tumultuous family situations and focus in particular on mother/son relationships. Like Donnie, John lashes out at his mother despite her best efforts, but ultimately reconciles with her. The dark tone balanced with emotion and [[BlackComedy humor]] has also drawn comparisons.
* TheWoobie: [[DysfunctionJunction Almost everybody.]] [[BrokenBird April]], [[JerkassWoobie John]], and [[AntiVillain Crowley]] are the most prominent.
