Context YMMV / Falsettos

Go To

* AwardSnub: The revival of the show was nominated for five Tony Awards and didn't win a single one. While both shows were well-received critically, many Falsettos fans felt that ''Theatre/HelloDolly'' swept the Tonys to an inane level and didn't have the serious social commentary and/or subject matter that Falsettos had. Some felt that Andrew Rannells or Brandon Uranowitz should've won Featured Actor over Gavin Creel for that show, with several believing that their respective chances were undone by a vote split. Additionally there were a few who thought Stephanie J. Block should've won Featured Actress over Rachel Bay Jones for ''Theatre/DearEvanHansen''. Though in both of these cases, it's worth noting that the respective winner was hugely acclaimed, same with the losses in Lead Actor and Revival.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** "Whizzer Going Down" from ''In Trousers''.
** "This Had Better Come To a Stop".
** "Falsettoland".
** "You Gotta Die Sometime".
* BigLippedAlligatorMoment:
** "March of the Falsettos"
** Also to a lesser extent, "Four Jews In a Room Bitching". While it briefly introduces the main characters of Act 1, it has little to no relevance to the actual plot of the musical, and the retelling of the story of Moses serves no purpose and is never brought up again.
* DiagnosedByTheAudience
** Jason shows signs of being somewhere on the autism spectrum throughout Act 1. He is highly intelligent for his age, but is unsure how to act in social situations, tends to fixate on specific interests, and in the revival, is shown covering his ears and looking quite distressed in one of the many scenes in which his parents yell at each other.
** Mendel shows signs of suffering from some kind of anxiety disorder.
** Marvin’s unstable relationships, his anger outburst at the end of Act 1 and the fact that he seemingly switches between mistreating the other characters and begging for them not to abandon him suggest that he may have Borderline Personality Disorder.
* FridgeBrilliance / FridgeHorror: There's a small shout-out in the revival to Theatre/{{Rent}}, which became well-known as the ''other'' 90's musical to tackle the New York AIDS crisis and frequently features characters' watches buzzing when it's time for their AZT breaks. In the original production, right before "This Had Better Come to a Stop," everyone looked at their watches; in the revival, we hear a buzz coming from only one watch - [[spoiler: [[KilledOffForReal Whizzer's.]] ]]
* SugarWiki/HeartwarmingMoments:
** The Bar Mitzvah.
** Whizzer showing up to Jason's Little League game because Jason invited him. Even while Whizzer and Marvin were apart, he still stayed friends with Jason.
* MemeticMutation:
** "[[RepeatedForEmphasis Hepatitis hepatitis?]]"
* ObscurePopularity: It has had a dedicated online fanbase since the revival, but isn’t discussed in mainstream a lot.
* PortmanteauCoupleName: Whizzer + Marvin = Whizzvin.
* ValuesDissonance:
** The frequent use of homophobic and ableist language can fall into this. Though, the 2016 revival seems to lean towards DeliberateValuesDissonance.
