* ContestedSequel: While widely praised by critics in its own time, both reviewers and fans are split on what to make of it nowadays. Either it's an unexpected heavy-hitter that marked Bowie's return to form as a solo artist, or it's too dated and directionless to hold a candle against his better albums, with some in the latter camp even lumping it in with ''Music/{{Tonight}}'' and the original mix of ''Music/NeverLetMeDown'' as part of the AudienceAlienatingEra that was his self-described "Music/PhilCollins years." Some TakeAThirdOption and say that it's good in its own right, but sub-par by Bowie standards, and even that has its opponents on both fronts. Of Bowie's more contested projects post-Tin Machine, this one remains the most divisive.
* HarsherInHindsight: As mentioned on the main page, ''Black Tie White Noise'' turned out to be Mick Ronson's last work with David Bowie before passing away from liver cancer -- the same disease that would kill Bowie just two days after the release of [[Music/BlackstarAlbum his own final album]].
* HilariousInHindsight: The bonus track "Lucy Can't Dance" is said to be a dismissal of Music/{{Madonna}}'s antics during the ''Music/LikeAPrayer''-''Music/{{Erotica}}'' area as something [[ItsBeenDone Bowie's already done himself]]. However, some of the lines seem to line up with things Madonna would explore ''after'' the song's release:
** ''"Now you're looking for God in exciting new ways"'' could be linked to Madonna's Kabbalah phase later in the 90's
** ''"Guess I'll put all my eggs in a postmodern song"'' suggests the turn to the electronica music she would sample first in ''Music/BedtimeStories'' and then embrace outright in ''Music/RayOfLight''.
