* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Komarovsky. Is he a monster who games everyone, [[RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil rapes Lara]] and completely lacks remorse or moral fiber? A genius who simply does what he must to survive? A JerkWithAHeartOfGold who genuinely cares for Lara, to the extent that [[IJustWantMyBelovedToBeHappy he's willing to save Yuri as well]]? You could make a case for all of the above.
* {{Anvilicious}}: The book definitely, the author constantly places little essays about the nature of art or Communism or what have you in the mouths of his characters.
* AwardSnub: Although it did very well at the UsefulNotes/{{Academy Award}}s, earning ten nominations and winning five of them, Creator/OmarSharif was not nominated for Best Actor (despite the fact that he WON the UsefulNotes/GoldenGlobe that year). Creator/JulieChristie actually won Best Actress that year, but not for this film (instead, she managed to get it for ''Film/{{Darling}}''). Tom Courtenay also lost out for Best Supporting Actor.
* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic:
** Music/MauriceJarre's score, highlighted by the unforgettable "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Yd2PzoF1y8 Lara's Theme]]".
** And the thrilling [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h07LEHT12Lc intermission music]] right after Strelnikov's armored train screams by.
* CriticalDissonance: Despite ''Zhivago'' being a colossal box office hit, most critics hated it during its initial release. Its reputation [[VindicatedByHistory has improved over time]], however.
* EndingFatigue: The last 15-20 minutes after Yuri and Lara separate drag on for many viewers, especially since it's largely Yevgraf describing (rather than the film showing) what happened to the main characters ([[spoiler:Yuri's death]] excepted).
* EnsembleDarkhorse: Pretty much every review singles out Tom Courtenay (Pasha) and Rod Steiger (Komarovsky) for praise. The former was even the only member of the cast to get nominated for an Oscar.
* HilariousInHindsight: Creator/RobertBolt dismissed Creator/SarahMiles for Lara, calling her a "north country slut". Not only was she in Creator/DavidLean's next film, ''Film/RyansDaughter'', which was also written by Bolt, but they were later married!
* OneSceneWonder: The [[AnarchyIsChaos Anarchist]] being sent to the gulag. He chastises the other passengers, saying ''they'' are the slaves. Played by none other than Creator/KlausKinski (''Film/ForAFewDollarsMore'', ''Film/AguirreTheWrathOfGod'', ''Film/{{Fitzcarraldo}}'').
* SuspiciouslySimilarSong: "Lara's Theme" sounds vaguely similar to Juventino Rosas' "[[https://youtu.be/ekDdvooRYPE?si=8ErxReHxnQUDwUF1 Over the Waves]]" waltz, so much so that when it gets repurposed as HappyCircusMusic in other media, it's often mistaken for an instrumental version of "Lara's Theme".
* TearJerker: Plenty of examples. One unnerving scene in the novel is the formerly self-assured, jovial burner-of-villages Strelnikov's breakdown, as he keeps talking at Yuri late into the night [[PleaseDontLeaveMe just to avoid being left alone]].
-->"I'll be going soon myself."
