!! Joshua Jones features the following tropes
* AlliterativeName:
** Our title protagonist, '''Jo'''shua '''Jo'''nes.
** Ravi and Fiona's tortoise is named '''T'''earaway '''T'''revor.
* BigStormEpisode: A major storm hits in "Haywire", which threatens to ruin Joe Laski's haybales, which he needs to feed the cows.
* ButtMonkey: Spanner's laziness and stubbornness often gets him into trouble.
* DisappearedDad: Ravi's father is never seen, although his father (Ravi's grandfather) is a recurring character.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: In "Haywire", Joe has Spanner drive the tractor. Spanner ends up in a ditch.
* FearOfThunder: "Haywire" shows that Mr Cashmore is afraid of thunder, while Sharon is afraid of lightning. As such, they both freak out when a storm rolls in.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Sharon, a DumbBlonde and the most outwardly feminine character, owns a mobile cafe.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Fiona loves nature and animals, and often works alongside local vet Daphne to take care of them.
* TheGhost: Everything on the wharf is owned by the very wealthy Mr Biggott, who never appears in person, but is often heard on the phone to Mr Cashmore, his right-hand man.
* HouseboatHero: Joshua lives on his narrowboat.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: Ravi, who is around eight or nine, is a close friend to Josh, who is an adult.
* LazyBum: Spanner doesn't like working for Mr Cahsmore, and prefers to instead nap or hang around Sharon's cafe.
* LimitedSocialCircle: The people of Clearwater Canal don't seem to have any other friends outside of each other. The only character outside this small town we know of is Mr Cashmore's boss, Mr Biggott.
* MeaningfulName:
** The wealthy businessman is named Wilton ''Cash''more.
** The grease monkey is named (nicknamed?) Spanner, a type of wrench.
** The veterinarian is named Daphne ''Peacock''.
** Uncle Harish's parrot is named Boomerang, because he always comes back when he flies off.
* MissingMom: Fiona's mother is never seen or mentioned.
* OfficialCouple: Spanner and Sharon, who are frequently seen together, call each other pet names, and go on a date in "Paperwork".
* RepetitiveName: In "Tortoise", Fiona suggests that Ravi name the tortoise Timmy Timmy.
* RichBitch: Mr Cashmore, a wealthy, short-tempered twit.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Mr Cashmore's attitude towards Spanner. Not that he's that bright himself.
* YouAreFat: In "Tortoise", Sharon serves up salad instead of meat pie at her cafe, saying that pies make you fat, and Spanner is fat enough, gesturing to his pudgy belly.
