* ApprovalOfGod:
** Ed Annunziata retweeted Johnny's ''VideoGame/EccoTheDolphin'' video.
** His ''VideoGame/{{Skullgirls}}'' review got [[https://twitter.com/Skullgirls/status/600827962154356737?lang=en retweeted]] by the creators of the game.
** [=DoctorM64=] [[https://twitter.com/Somecallmejon/status/773670991155331072 really liked]] Johnny's review of ''VideoGame/AnotherMetroid2Remake''.
** ''VideoGame/SonicRush'' composer Hideki Naganuma [[https://twitter.com/Hideki_Naganuma/status/828454508418080768 RT'd his review]] of the ''Sonic Rush'' trilogy.
** Music/BrentalFloss enjoyed Johnny's ''Use Your Words'' video, even praising his, Elliot's, and Matt's jokes.
** The Behemoth thanked Johnny and Honest Biggums for their review of ''VideoGame/CastleCrashers'' on Twitter, especially since the game's 10th anniversary was coming up.
* AshcanCopy: His review of ''VideoGame/CrashBandicootNSaneTrilogy''[[note]]The one that appeared on his own channel, not the collaboration he did with WebVideo/{{Caddicarus}}[[/note]]. He says at the start of this video that he didn't feel it was really necessary to make the video, since he had already stated most of his thoughts on the game in the Caddicarus video, but that he had to make it, since the early review copy he received came with terms and conditions requiring him to make a video on his own channel about it.
* BuryYourArt: Johnny has admitted he hates the quality of many of the earliest SGB reviews done for the channel, such as the original ''VideoGame/SonicAdventure'' review that had all of its in-game footage recorded with a camcorder. He also feels that his opinions on certain games having greatly shifted since then. Although a few of them were taken down due to copyright claims, he also stated that he personally either deleted some of them himself or decided not to reupload them afterwards due to thinking they really were that bad.
* {{Corpsing}}: Johnny's reaction (or at least it's a reaction that looks very much like corpsing, as he has no real reason to try and hide his laughter) to the [[BlatantLies outstanding voice acting]] in ''VideoGame/MegaMan8''.
* CreatorBacklash:
** Johnny admitted in his 2017 review of ''[[VideoGame/SonicChronicles Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood]]'' that he regretted his words about the game being good at the time.
** Johnny also admits in his review of ''VideoGame/PokemonLetsGoPikachuAndLetsGoEevee'' that calling Bugsy from ''VideoGame/PokemonGoldAndSilver'' "it" (due to ViewerGenderConfusion) during his review of Gen 2 several years ago came off as transphobic and is ashamed for making the joke.
* DistancedFromCurrentEvents: Following revelations about a community manager that worked for Aggro Crab, Johnny took down his Going Under and Backbone Spotlights.
* DoingItForTheArt: All of Johnny's reviews and LetsPlays are done sorely for the art and entertainment for his fans. In the rare moments where Johnny can't do any games he had scheduled with Elliot and/or Matt, he comes up with a random game to play for the channel so that his audience will have something to watch instead of waiting for the schedule to get back on track.
* ExecutiveMeddling: A minor case of it for his review of ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil2Remake''. Originally, Johnny did have some small gripes with the game, but he still sang high praises overall. Capcom, who gave Johnny a review copy, wanted him to tone down the criticisms since they felt he was either being a bit too harsh or wanted him to make the game look good.
* HeAlsoDid: Johnny was the animator for [[https://youtube.com/@ChimneySwift11 ChimneySwift11]]'s ''The VideoGame/{{Minecraft}} Files'' series during Season 4, with him not only animating [[https://youtu.be/tKwn2QJoNGw the intro]], but also [[https://youtu.be/MsABsCPzYSE five]] [[https://youtu.be/lyj1GS9qvx4 separate]] [[https://youtu.be/YzBXGzojNGI animations]] [[https://youtu.be/rLp9Q9PE2v0 from]] [[https://youtu.be/okIs2nHRWE8 it]].
* [[ImageSource/{{Internet}} Image Source]]: FailureHero (from his ''Videogame/TheLegendOfZeldaALinkBetweenWorlds'' review).
* MilestoneCelebration: 2018 is the tenth anniversary of Johnny's channel so he posted a special [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmS9rDJ6DA8 video]] where he and Elliot visit their old room where they used to film and proceed to look back at the videos they made through the past 10 years.
* MissingEpisode: The original ''VideoGame/BigRigsOverTheRoadRacing'' review got taken down due to alleged copyright infringement [[note]]The video was overlaid with the song "Remind Me" by Röyksopp playing throughout[[/note]], and by the time it got sorted out, even the original video file was lost to a dying hard drive. Johnny and Elliot did eventually re-review the game, however.
* NoBudget: Most internet reviewers don't have a lot of money for their shows, and Johnny is no exception.
** Back in the old days of the channel, Johnny not only used his old phone to record footage of him talking, he didn't even have enough for the tripod; he just put his phone on a shelf. As for game footage, Johnny had to use a crummy $100 camera and point it towards his TV after turning off the lights.
** The VideoGame/{{SAW}} video had a blue tint that was added in post-production. Johnny and Elliot didn't even use rope to tie around themselves; they instead used an extension cord they found outside their house.
*** In the anniversary retrospective, Johnny claims to have found one of his cameras lying abandoned in a train station, and that Elliot playing the demon in the ''Superman 64'' review was wearing an upside-down shower curtain for a cape or cloak.
* PromotedFanboy: He was a fan of the Angry Video Game Nerd who was his inspiration for doing reviews. A screencap of his review of "Shadow the Hedgehog" was shown in the episode about magazines. By the time the Sonic film came out, Juan became a guest with James Rolfe in a crossover review.
* [[QuoteSource/{{Internet}} Quote Source]]:
** DenialOfDiagonalAttack (from his ''VideoGame/SuperMetroid'' review).
** DifficultySpike (from his ''VideoGame/CaveStory'' review).[[invoked]]
** FanservicePack (from his ''VideoGame/MegaManX8'' review).
** GameBreaker (from his original ''VideoGame/SonicR'' review).
* ScheduleSlip:
** {{Discussed|Trope}}:
-->'''Johnny:''' Okay, ladies and gentlemen, time to end this. And once again, I apologize for taking so long with this.
-->'''Ted:''' It's been more than a month, John. I didn't know that this was the month plus one week of Pokemon.
-->'''Johnny:''' Will you shut up-ugh, you see, this is why doing a month of RPG's is a bad idea.
-->'''Ryan:''' Johnny, the only RPG you actually did this month was ''Pokémon Red/Blue'' and ''Yellow'', and the rest of them were, you know, short N64 spinoff games, plus the ''Trading Card Game'', which I still have better cards than you, so you really have no excuse.
-->'''Johnny:''' Well, I'm ''trying'' to start this review up, but you assholes just have to keep rubbing it in, do you.
-->'''Ted:''' Yeah.
-->'''Ryan:''' Of ''course''.
-->'''Johnny:''' Fuck you both.
** Several game reviews were thrown off schedule from their intended release due to many reasons and unfortunate situations. Take ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamCity'': It was supposed to be reviewed around the time it was released, but, well, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXLu7IzvYbA#t=0m19s he'll tell you.]]
** The ''Month of Mario'' had to be extended from April into June 2011. [[ArtifactTitle Kinda screws with the name]], which is why John ultimately stopped naming his themed marathons "Month of X".
-->'''Description of the ''Super Mario World & All Stars'' review:''' [[LampshadeHanging The time has come to end Month(s) of Mario.]]
** Probably the most famous of which is the Sonic Interview Sequel. It was delayed indefinitely after the Christmas 2011 deadline flew by, and the process of making it ended up creating a month-long hiatus for the ''VideoGame/SonicTheHedgehog2006'' LP and a 6 month gap between his reviews.
** As he's said twice now, he finds that it's best to not set a deadline for himself.
** The month [[ScheduleSlip and one week]] of ''Pokémon''.
** Averted in the ''Sonic 06'' review: he posted at the beginning of a week that it would be uploaded "sometime this week," and it was uploaded on that Saturday.
** [[LampshadeHanging Ha! He told you he'd]] [[AvertedTrope upload the ''Zelda II'' review by the end of Feburary!]] [[labelnote:*]]AH DON'T HIT US![[/labelnote]]
** Once again, he made the deadline for uploading the ''VideoGame/{{Bastion}}'' by the posted date, 6/09/2013.
** Some difficulties in March 2015 forced Johnny to put both ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClank'' and ''VideoGame/SouthParkTheStickOfTruth'' on hold and delay the planned ''VideoGame/SonicHeroes'' commentary.
** The review of ''VideoGame/StarFoxAssault'' was delayed due to the releases of ''VideoGame/MetroidPrimeFederationForce'' and ''VideoGame/AnotherMetroid2Remake'', leading to reviews of those games being posted in the interim, along with his recording device frying up when recording footage for ''Assault''.
** The ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'' Marathon was a victim of this as every other game from the franchise had Johnny review a different game. The first game after ''Kingdom Hearts'' was '' Knuckles Chaotix'' (admittedly a video created for the Too Many Games Expo) and the following two were games from franchises he loved as a kid (''Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy'' and ''Sonic Mania''). He even jokingly lampshades this when goes from ''VideoGame/KingdomHearts358DaysOver2'' straight to ''VideoGame/KingdomHeartsBirthBySleep''. However, this streak was short-lived as the ''Birth by Sleep'' review was followed up by another unrelated game, ''VideoGame/MetroidSamusReturns''.
** The Second Donator's Marathon got hit by this as Johnny was moving to a new place which ate up a lot of time behind the scenes. Because of it, Johnny made an update video stating that he will have to cut the marathon shorter than expected due to his schedule for that year.
** After Ted won a bet, Johnny had to review a Dragon Quest game before the end of 2016. That took around five years.
* SeriesHiatus: Both channels have been on break at one point or another, mainly due to each member of the team needing to shift focus on other priorities.
* ThrowItIn: In the ''Superman 64'' review, the demon (played by Elliot) would simply back step into the background as he faded away, only for him to accidentally bump into a lamp during the process. The anniversary retrospective reveals that the gag wasn't intentional, but was kept in because of RuleOfFunny and it helped in showing how incompetent the demon really was.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen
** Johnny was originally going to do another Zelda marathon that would've covered every Zelda game after ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaMajorasMask'' in October in order to celebrate the new Zelda game that was going to be for Wii U. Unfortunately, since it got delayed, Johnny decided to scrap the idea. Though it's now averted as he finally got around doing the reviews once the game was released for the Switch.
** For the Second Indie Showcase, Johnny was going to do a collab review of ''VideoGame/CastleCrashers'' with Honest Biggums as a way to give his channel a little love. Unfortunately, scheduling problems occurred and the game wasn't reviewed for the Indie Showcase. He decided to instead replaced with with ''VideoGame/PapersPlease''. They would eventually review the game together 3 years later.
** Johnny originally wanted to place the "Twin Snakes" review with ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolid2SonsOfLiberty'' as it included features from that game, but deiced to placed it in the prequel as he figured it would be better that way.
** Johnny was originally going to become a teacher, but ultimately became a Let's Player and reviewer. Let's just say it being one is probably a more fulfilling job.
*** Some people have thought of an [[AlternateUniverse Alternate Universe]] where Johnny DID become a teacher, with his catchphrase still there.
-->[[Website/YouTube YouTube]] commenter: "Hello, ladies and gentlemen. I'm Mr. Juan Ortiz. But, please, let's keep it casual. [[TitleDrop Some call me Johnny.]]
