* TeasingCreator: As with ''VideoGame/MortalKombatX'' before it, Ed Boon has gone on Twitter to tease potential {{Guest Fighter}}s for the game. He went on to post two polls, one with ''Mortal Kombat'' characters Sub-Zero, Raiden, Jax and Johnny Cage (note how former ''Injustice'' guest Scorpion isn't present) and another with ComicBook/{{Spawn}}, ComicBook/{{Hellboy}}, Film/TheTerminator and [[Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer Buffy Summers]]. At the end of the game's DLC development, Sub-Zero and Spawn have convincingly taken the number one spot for both polls, with Sub-Zero being added in the game's first DLC release and Raiden being teased in the same trailer and later confirmed with the second DLC fighter pack along with Hellboy, while Spawn and the Terminator were held back to ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11''[='=]s DLC releases.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Some early WordOfGod discussion about where the studio was going after the first ''Injustice'' suggested Darkseid would be a villain in a sequel. This was evidently dropped in favor of Brainiac, though Darkseid joins the character roster as a DLC character.
** One of the original ideas for the game involved Ra's Al Ghul (voiced by Creator/BryanCranston) recruiting villains to make an even more extreme version of the Regime. Traces of this discarded storyline can still be seen in ''Injustice 2''[='s=] first teaser trailer (narrated by Cranston), Black Adam's arcade ending and the prequel comics.
** Supergirl's default character design and appearance was consistently worked on and altered up until release. As well as her face being tweaked, [[https://www.artstation.com/artwork/NVR5d her original default look]] had a smaller more traditional "S" shield on her chest, as well as a more complex-designed armored costume with a triple-tipped cape. This version was seen in the initial teaser trailer and has made appearances in various forms of marketing, even making it to covers for the game.
** For some reason Deadshot's intro animations changed when the game was released. His original ones, seen in [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSpIKf0CdWc his and Harley Quinn's trailer]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBxS3Uu3-uk&t=9s Black Canary's trailer]] features him playing around with his knife. The intro animations he has in-game however, feature him flipping a bullet like a coin (If he talks second) or aiming his rifle at his opponent (If he talks first).
** ComicBook/{{Static}} was ready to be included in the roster, but was ultimately cut due to legal reasons.
** [[https://www.instagram.com/p/BYRfvIfha9t/ Jim Lee's initial concept art for Raiden's appearance]] had him resemble more of a humanoid ElementalEmbodiment of lightning rather than the more traditional human-looking appearance that was eventually settled upon. This holdover is seen in his ending artwork, where Raiden has an appearance similar to this artwork concept.
** A Fighter Pack 0 was considered, which would have brought back characters from the first game (specifically Ares, Batgirl, Doomsday and Shazam) as DLC, but was dropped in favour of Fighter Pack 3.
** [[https://www.cbr.com/injustice-2-unused-concept-art/ Concept art]] suggests Bluebird, Detective Chimp, [[ComicBook/{{Hellblazer}} John Constantine]], ComicBook/{{Etrigan}}, and even ''ComicBook/KryptoTheSuperdog'' were considered at one point.
** Ed Boon revealed in an interview for ''VideoGame/MortalKombat11'' that Neo from ''Franchise/TheMatrix'' was pretty close to being added as a DLC character. A poll he posted on Twitter in 2017 relating to this implied that they weren't able to get Creator/KeanuReeves on board for this.
** [[https://comicvine1.cbsistatic.com/uploads/scale_medium/11132/111329300/6687997-justin-murray-ij2-circe-02.jpg Concept art of Circe]] has surfaced showing she was in consideration for appearing in the game.
