* ApprovalOfGod: The creators of the original manga, Tsugumi Ohba and Takashi Obata, were given an early screening and they enjoyed the movie, feeling it was faithful to the spirit of their work (not the details, although that was another thing they appreciated[[note]]they felt that you shouldn't have to retell their story all the time, and that drastically altered versions make things more interesting.[[/note]]) and the ending surprised them "in a good way". They even drew their own artwork of the movie's Light and Ryuk.
* CaliforniaDoubling: Set in UsefulNotes/{{Seattle}}, the film was shot in UsefulNotes/{{Vancouver}}.
* DawsonCasting: High school students Light and Mia are respectively played by Nat Wolff and Margaret Qualley, both of whom were 21 at the time of filming.
* DearNegativeReader: After the film premiered to less-than-enthusiastic reviews, Creator/AdamWingard [[https://archive.is/xM82U called everyone who criticized the movie and his demeanor]] "trolls".
* FakeAmerican: Creator/ChrisBritton (which counts as a RemakeCameo as he dubbed the original anime, but not a RoleReprise) as Aaron Peltz, [[spoiler:the child molester Light uses and then kills.]]
* RoleReprise:
** In the Latin American Spanish dub of the film, Rolando de Castro (who voiced Ryuk in the anime) returned as that character.
** In the French dub, Emmanuel Karsen returns as the voice of Ryuk.
** Ditto in the Japanese dub, as Shido Nakamura, who voiced Ryuk in the anime and the Japanese films, also reprises the role.
* SavedFromDevelopmentHell: After more than ''ten years'' of interest from American film companies, including briefly being owned by Creator/WarnerBros, Creator/{{Netflix}} finally ended up getting the rights.
* StudioHop: The movie was set up originally at Creator/WarnerBros, and after a long stint in DevelopmentHell was set to begin filming in 2016 before the disappointing box office numbers for ''Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice'' resulted in WB cutting its annual movie slate. Fortunately, Warner allowed director Adam Wingard to shop the project elsewhere, resulting in Creator/{{Netflix}} buying the rights.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/ShaneBlack was at one point attached to direct. As [[JustForFun/OneOfUs a big fan]] of the manga, he was vehemently opposed to ExecutiveMeddling-induced changes, which included plans for Ryuk to be AdaptedOut, among other details.
** After Black left, Gus Van Sant was attached to direct, but soon dropped out for unknown reasons.
** There was a long-standing rumor that Creator/ZacEfron was going to star as Light in the film, before Nat Wolff was confirmed in the role. Why Efron was not cast is unknown, though rumor has it that he turned down the part so the character's race wouldn't need to be changed...[[ShaggyDogStory which is exactly what ended up happening]].
* WordOfGod: It has been [[https://io9.gizmodo.com/why-netflixs-death-note-is-really-an-origin-story-and-w-1798435941 outright confirmed]] that Mia and Light are {{Decomposite Character}}s of the original Light Yagami.
