* ActingForTwo:
** Kasumi and Alpha-152 share the same Japanese and English voice actresses: Creator/HoukoKuwashima and Creator/LaurenLanda.
** Come Dead or Alive 5: Ultimate on the English side, Creator/KateHiggins voices both Tina Armstrong and Momiji.
* ActorAllusion: Mila dresses as Hikage during VideoGame/SenranKagura crossover. Both shares the same Japanese voice actress, Creator/RyokoShiraishi.
* CelebrityVoiceActor:
** Dennis Rodman as Zack in Xtreme Beach Volleyball.
** Creator/DarrenCriss as Jann Lee in Dimensions.
* CreatorBacklash: While promoting Dead or Alive 6 in an interview with Eurogamer, Yohei Shimbori showed annoyance at how online discussion about the game revolved around complaints about it toning down the sexualization the franchise was famous for and how he was having to spend more time talking about the game's jiggle physics than any of its modes or fighting mechanics. He also blamed Dead or Alive Xtreme for irrevocably centering the series around its sex appeal.
* CreatorsFavorite: Tomonobu Itagaki has gone on record to say, several times, Kasumi is his daughter, while showing no personal or close concern from any other character he has created or directed during his days at Team Ninja / Koei-Tecmo. The man was very protective of Kasumi too, openly admitting she would never appear in VideoGame/NinjaGaiden, claiming Kasumi was too pure (despite being canonically the one to kill Raidou) and wasn’t the type to engage in the same bloody works as Ryu Haybusa, allowing her less morally inclined sister, and almost as popular, Ayane to appear instead. Long after Itagaki had left Team Ninja, Kasumi started making cameos in Ninja Gaiden, becoming fully playable in Ninja Gaiden III, soaking herself in blood as much as Ryu and Ayane.
* CrossDressingVoices: Eliot plays straight with his Japanese voice actor, but averted in English where he is played by a man.
* TheDanza: Creator/ChristineMarieCabanos is the English voice actress of Marie Rose.
* KillerApp: Not only were Dead or Alive 3 and 4 exclusive to the original Platform/Xbox and Platform/Xbox360 respectively, but series lead Kasumi became something of a mascot for the Xbox brand in Japan, being used to promote it over characters like Master Chief and Marcus Fenix.
* NoDubForYou: While the fifth game as a whole is dubbed, the fighting game-related Guest Fighters (Akira, Sarah, Pai, Jacky and Mai) are stuck speaking one language regardless of settings; while Mai has new voicework done by Creator/AmiKoshimizu, the Virtua Fighter characters re-use voice clips from Final Showdown and it shows - they're noticably of a different audio quality when compared to the rest of the cast.
* NoExportForYou:
** Nintendo decided not to release Dimensions in three Nordic countries Sweden, Norway and Denmark, due to concerns about some of its content raised by a small-town blogger. To paraphrase Upton Sinclair, said blogger aimed at Nintendo's heart, and by accident he hit the company in the stomach.
** Koei Tecmo themselves decided to not release Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 outside of Asia. According to them, to avoid controversy in a time when the representation of female characters in video games have become a bigger concern than ever before in Western countries. However, given the non-Japanese Asian version of the game is localized to English (Except for voice overs), and given both the [=PS4=] and [=PSVita=] are region free, this can be easily worked around by importing it from stores like Play-Asia.
** Due to new censorship rules enforced by Sony in Japan, it appears Dead or Alive Xtreme 3: Scarlet may suffer this fate. A shame, considering EnsembleDarkhorse Misaki from Venus Vacation makes her first console debut for the [=PlayStation=] 4. This is somewhat mitigated since Misaki will and the other unknown character will be DLC for Fortune. You'd just have to get a Chinese PSN card.
* TheOtherDarrin:
** Kasumi was played by Creator/SakuraTange in the first two games but was replaced by Creator/HoukoKuwashima since 3 after Tange retired from voice acting. It's notable however that Tange returned to voice acting and played the roles of Kasumi Alpha and Alpha-152 in Dimensions.
*** Tange does not reprise her role as Alpha-152 in 5, that role is now played by Creator/HoukoKuwashima. This makes her the only Japanese voice actor that does not reprise their role from Dimensions.
** Creator/MamiKoyama was the original voice of Tina in the first game, before Creator/YukoNagashima took over beginning with the second, and has been playing her in very game since.
** For long time players, this was most notable in Dimensions. While all of the female characters retain the same actresses from Dead or Alive 4, only the voices of Hayabusa, Hayate, Bayman, Zack and Eliot remain the same on the male side. Leon and Bass were due to their voice actors passing away.
** Jann Lee: Creator/ToshioFurukawa-->Creator/NobutoshiCanna
** Brad Wong: Yukimasa Kishino-->Creator/UnshoIshizuka
** Bass: Creator/DaisukeGori-->Creator/KentaMiyake
*** Incidentally, this made him sound exactly like Zangief, since Miyake provides his voice in the most recent incarnations.
** Leon: Creator/KojiTotani-->Creator/JojiNakata
** Gen Fu: Creator/TakeshiAono-->Creator/ChikaoOhtsuka
*** The reason for the change was because of Aono's health, and later passed away after Dimensions was released. And then, Ohtsuka passed away too. Sheesh.
** Raidou: Koji Yada-->Creator/TetsuInada
** Alpha-152: Kaori Takeda-->Creator/SakuraTange-->Creator/HoukoKuwashima
** The English cast for 5 is filled with this as well.
*** Kasumi went from Creator/KariWahlgren to Creator/LaurenLanda, best known for Litchi Faye-Ling and Yan Leixia. .
*** Eliot went from Rolland Lopez to Creator/DavidVincent. Funny considering Eliot looks like a non-Jerkass Jin Kisaragi.
*** Lisa / La Mariposa got Darrin'd from Masasa Moyo to Creator/WendeeLee, Ayane's original voice in Dimensions.
*** Kokoro is went from Kathryn Feller to Heather Hogan-Watson, best known as Viola, Amy Sorel, and Colette Brunel.
*** Gen Fu was Darrin'd from Paul Nakauchi to Creator/KirkThornton.
*** Bayman was Darrin'd from Zach Hanks to Creator/MatthewMercer.
*** Christie went from Creator/AprilStewart to Creator/LauraBailey.
*** Bass went from Joe J. Thomas to Creator/PatrickSeitz.
*** Jann Lee is voiced by newcomer Creator/KaijiTang, the voice of Kenshiro in Hokuto Musou. You can tell it's him by the FunnyBruceLeeNoises he makes. He replaces Creator/DarrenCriss, who played him in Dimensions.
*** Lei Fang went from Zinnia Su to Creator/CassandraLeeMorris.
*** Zack went from Creator/KharyPayton to Creator/KeithSilverstein.
*** Ayane went from Creator/WendeeLee in Dimensions to Brittney Harvey, who plays Sakura in VideoGame/StreetFighterIV
*** Creator/ErinFitzgerald stood in for Creator/TaraStrong in voicing Rachel as she made her transition from VideoGame/NinjaGaiden to VideoGame/DeadOrAlive
** Between [=DOA5=] and [=DOA6=]...
*** Creator/JaniceKawaye replaces Brittney Harvey as Ayane.
*** Creator/DaveBMitchell replaces Creator/TroyBaker as Ryu Hayabusa.
*** Christie went from Creator/LauraBailey to an uncredited voice actress.
*** Rig went from Creator/LiamOBrien to Creator/KyleHebert - the voice of Ryu!
*** Mila's voice actress in 5 is unknown to this very day. However, she was voiced by Amber Connor in 6.
*** Like Christie above, Rachel's voice actress was replaced with an uncredited new actress, replacing Creator/ErinFitzgerald.
* RealSongThemeTune:
** Music/Aerosmith songs were used as opening and closing themes for [=DOA3=], [=DOA2=] Ultimate and [=DOA4=], but this practice was discontinued after Itagaki left Team Ninja, suggesting that it may have been AuthorAppeal on his part. (It sounds particularly jarring in Dimensions when the same cutscenes that had been backed with Aerosmith songs in previous games now have more generic-sounding instrumental BGM.) By contrast, [=DOA5=] has a more hip-hop oriented soundtrack.
** Meja's 1996 single "How Crazy Are You?" becomes the theme song to the Xtreme Beach Volleyball games. Also, B*witched's "If it Don't Fit" plays during the opening demos.
* RoleReprise:
** The following characters have never had their Japanese voice actors changed for the entire series: Ayane, Ryu Hayabusa, Zack, Lei Fang, Bayman, Helena Douglas (Yuka Koyama), Hayate, Christie, Hitomi, Lisa Hamilton, Eliot, Kokoro, and practically everyone who made their debut in the fifth game.
** Amongst the English voice actors of 5...
*** Hayabusa is reprised by Creator/TroyBaker from his role in Dimensions and VideoGame/NinjaGaiden 3.
*** Brad Wong is reprised by Creator/GrantGeorge from Dimensions. His role as Victor Donovan however has been Darrin'd by Creator/KirkThornton.
*** Tina is reprised by Creator/KateHiggins.
*** Helena is reprised by Creator/KarenStrassman, after she had been Darrin'd previously by Julianne Buescher in Dimensions.
*** Creator/EdenRiegel reprises Hitomi. You may know her as Manga/Bleach filler character Rurichiyo Kasumioji.
*** Creator/YuriLowenthal reprises his role as Hayate from Dimensions.
*** Unlike Rachel, Momiji was left unscaved from the Darrin'ing in her migration, keeping her VideoGame/NinjaGaiden voice actresses Creator/YukoMinaguchi (Japanese) and Creator/KateHiggins (English).
*** Also, all the VideoGame/VirtuaFighter characters use their original quotes from Final Showdown, as part of an agreement between Tecmo and Sega. Akira is Creator/ShinichiroMiki, Pai is Creator/MinamiTakayama, Sarah is Lisle Wilkerson, and Jacky is Eric Kelso.
* SimilarlyNamedWorks:
** There's the most familiar Videogame franchise, at VideoGame/DeadOrAlive.
** However, there's also the Creator/TomClancy novel, Literature/DeadOrAlive, in the Literature section not related to the game.
** Then the Lupin III movie at Anime/LupinIIIDeadOrAlive.
** Also the TV series and sequel movie, Series/WantedDeadOrAlive.
** The new-wave band, Dead or Alive, responsible for the One-Hit Wonder, "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)"
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Team Ninja originally asked Creator/Bungie for permission to use the Master Chief, which proved impossible due to storyline restrictions. But the staff at Bungie were intrigued with the idea and wanted to try something similar. As a result, Bungie developed the concept of a Spartan not entirely connected to the Halo storyline who could conveniently and somewhat plausibly be fit into the Dead or Alive universe. This concept evolved into the character of Nicole.
