->'''The Saviors strike back.'''

----
* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: Alexandria's can comfortably hold its entire population.
* AllYourBaseAreBelongToUs: Alexandria and the Kingdom are both taken over by the Saviors for occupation. Carl's defiance, however, results in the destruction of Alexandria.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: Negan is visibly shaken when Carl asks him "Is this who you wanted to be?"
* AssholeVictim: Maggie shoots Dean, the {{jerkass}} Savior who nearly killed Jesus during the attack on the Satellite Outpost.
* AnArmAndALeg: Negan's plan for Rick is to make him "a stump with a head" in front of his people before killing him.
* BackForTheDead: Natania doesn't even appear on screen before she is killed by Enid, and we only see her after her death.
* TheBadGuyWins: This is the lowest the group has been since the deaths of Glenn and Abraham, and on a much larger scale. The Saviors are free and are in a particularly bad mood after being humiliated and beaten. Alexandria is sacked and burned. Hilltop is put under Simon’s control. The Kingdom has fallen with its survivors, mostly non-combatants, fleeing the Saviors with their king captured. Dwight has been compromised and is forced to join the group. And on top of all this, Carl has been bitten and Rick and Michonne are about to lose their son.
* BerserkButton: Negan is already out for Rick's blood, but Rick grabbing Lucille makes him go off the deep end in their fight.
* BookEnds: Rick’s time in Alexandria more or less begins and ends with him being involved in a fight where someone is tossed out the window. When he arrived and fought Pete, he threw Pete out the window. In this episode, as Alexandria is being bombed by the Saviors, Negan tosses Rick out of his own house.
* TheBusCameBack: The Oceanside community makes their first appearance since Season 7's "Something They Need".
* CallBack:
** Negan ends up tossing Rick out his window, much like how Rick's fight with Pete in Season 5's "Try" went.
* CharacterDeath: Neil from Hilltop, Natania from Oceanside, and the Savior Dean all die.
* ContinuityNod:
** Negan brings up how Carl was forced to kill Lori in Season 3's "Killer Within".
** Gavin brings up his regret from Benjamin's death in Season 7's "Bury Me Here".
** Maggie is all too familiar with Savior roadblocks after Season 6's "Last Day on Earth".
* {{Cliffhanger}}: Morgan is shown outside the Kingdom and listening to Gavin's threats against Ezekiel.
* DeathByAdaptation: Carl is not dead by the end of the episode, but his comic counterpart is still alive and well whereas Carl has been bitten.
* DestinationDefenestration: Negan throws Rick through the window during their fight.
* DownerEnding: Look at TheBadGuyWins above.
* EyeScream: Michonne impales a Savior who tries to capture her through the eye.
* HeelFaceTurn: Eugene helps Gabriel and Dr. Carson escape the Sanctuary.
* HesBack: Ezekiel regains the will to fight when the Saviors invade the Kingdom.
* HeroicSacrifice: Ezekiel allows himself to be captured by Gavin to give his people a chance to escape.
** Carl volunteers himself to be killed to fulfill Negan's "punishment'', knowing that he'll soon be dead from his bite.
* InternalReveal: Laura learns Dwight is the traitor when he turns on the Saviors hunting down the truck and kills them.
* IHaveYourWife:
** Jerry is taken hostage by Simon and Gary to get Maggie and the Kingdommers to surrender their guns.
** Later, Maggie sends a message to the Saviors written on the coffin containing the dead Dean, informing them of the 38 hostages she has taken captive.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Carl knows they cannot fight the Saviors, and thus orders the evacuation of Alexandria. Similarly, Ezekiel surrenders to Gavin to give Carol and his people escape.
* LastStand: Maggie states her intent to make Hilltop this for the AHK alliance.
* MakeAnExampleOfThem: Gavin takes Ezekiel so he can face execution at the Sanctuary and his zombified corpse displayed as an example on the price of defiance. Simon threatens Maggie to do the same to her and Negan also threatens Rick with it.
* MythologyGag: Carl's situation has reminded some comic readers of Comic Andrea's fate.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: The [[SarcasmMode brilliant plan]] to recruit Oceanside goes horribly wrong when Enid panics and shoots their leader, Natania, albeit in self-defense.
* PragmaticVillainy: As Hilltop is a community based on farming and crops, the Saviors do not take direct control of the community and allow Maggie's team to leave in peace, albeit minus Neil and some of their guns. Even Simon understands that the produce Hilltop farms is too valuable, especially considering the Saviors' low stocks following the unexpected siege.
* RedShirt: Riding in the Hilltop convoy's lead car are two major characters, a prominent supporting character... and Neil. Guess which one doesn't survive.
* ShipTease: Tara and Rosita have a moment where the latter begins playfully loading a bunch of heavy supplies in the former's arms. Tara is clearly getting more strained, but she seems to want to show off to Rosita by keeping it in check (in any case, we know Tara is attracted to Rosita).
* SoleSurvivor: Morgan is the only sniper of the Militia who wasn't killed during the Saviors escape from the Sanctuary.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: The Scavengers abandon Rick the minute the Saviors in the Sanctuary begin firing at them.
* ShutUpHannibal: During Rick and Negan's battle and after Negan taunting him throughout the fight, Rick growls at Negan, "You ever shut the hell up?" Negan, however, defies this trope by retorting, "[[ShutUpKirk Nope]]."
* TemptingFate:
** When Maggie pulls Dean out of the Hilltop's prison, he mockingly calls her "cupcake" and says she can "put on a show", right before she kills him by shooting him through the cheek.
** During his fight with Rick, Negan declares that after he’s killed Rick and retaken his slave states, he will recruit Carl and will groom him to one day become one of his right-hand men. Rick is understandably repulsed by this prospect. Neither men are aware that Carl is currently dying of a walker bite.
* TookALevelInBadass: Nabila attacks a Savior, takes his gun, and leads the Kingdommers to safety.
* TrashTheSet: Alexandria is firebombed by the Saviors and lost to Rick's group. Some of the Kingdom is also blown up by Ezekiel to distract Gavin.
* WhamEpisode: The Saviors have launched a devastating counter-attack and have sacked Alexandria, the group's home base for the past three seasons. The Kingdom has been conquered outright by the Saviors as well, and Ezekiel has sacrificed himself as a hostage so that Carol and his people can escape. Hilltop is now the last bastion of defense for the allied forces. And on top of all of this, Carl has been bitten and is dying.
* WhamShot: Carl reveals to Rick and Michonne that he's been bitten and it can't be amputated, meaning he's as good as dead.
* YouAreInCommandNow: Ezekiel gives Carol the task to lead and protect the Kingdommers.
* ZombieInfectee: It turns out Carl had been bitten when he faced the walkers while recruiting Siddiq.
