Flashbacks center around Nicole "Nicky" Nichols and her tempestuous relationship with her mother. After her next-to-last overdose on drugs, her mother more-or-less abandoned her, refusing even the slightest sympathy or touch. This is contrasted with her final experience going cold turkey--here in Litchfield, where Red pulled her together and threatened bloody retribution if Nicky ever used again.
