In chapter 74, [[TheReveal we finally get a flashback to the truth]], and it's far worse than anyone imagined. [[spoiler:Pray is one of the monsters who has been fighting humanity for centuries--and Anne is her '''daughter''']].

Even the day after he and Amal meet, he makes light of having given sexual favours in exchange for food at a young age. Then he had to flee the country with his suicidal father who never wanted a child and seems to see him as an obligation or something to preserve because Vienne loved Matty. There are hints Quigley does love Matty, but he never tells his son this and is too busy wallowing in guilt and grief to make Matty feel loved.
