[[folder: Amamiya's uncle]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/uncle.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Tell me where you got this "toy" before I stab you to death with it!]]The unnamed uncle of Hiroto Amamiya who was supposed to look after him after the deaths of his parents, instead he abused him and denied him everything he considered "too luxurious for someone like him".
----
* AbusiveParents: Slapped his nephew whenever he felt frustrated (but not punching since he thought slapping was okay to discipline kids), and while there were no physical scars, the emotional scars were many.
** After Amamiya was gone, he started abusing his own son to vent his frustrations, although unlike Van, his son didn't take this kindly.
* DomesticAbuse: Without his nephew or son to take his frustrations, he and his wife turned on each other, leading to their divorce.
* EvilUncle: After his brother died, he was supposed to look after Hiroto, but instead denied him even basic necessities since they were 'too luxurious for someone like him' and that he 'needed to learn about humility'. He prohibited things like: meals that weren't cheap (God forbid the food said 'Deluxe' in the name or packaging), toys, TV (unless it was for documentaries and even then, he changed his opinion all the time), traveling, clothes, etc. [[{{Hypocrite}} Of course, such rules didn't apply for him and his family]].
* ForYourOwnGood: He would always, always, ''always'' phrase his abuse upon Hiroto as if he was somehow doing the poor kid a favor with constant deprivation enforced by violence and screaming, and probably actually believed it. His wife, son, and store employees wouldn't put up with this self-serving narrative and retaliated, to his shock, horror, and endless frustration.
-->"How are you going to survive in the future with that attitude, huh? TELL ME!"
* FourEyesZeroSoul: In the manga he's shown with glasses, and if it wasn't clear already, a total asshat.
* HairTriggerTemper: He is disgustingly easy to piss off, and doesn't even have substance abuse or addiction as an excuse. When shown in a flashback in chapter 12 of the manga, he spots Hiroto quietly doing his homework, but seeing a cartoon character on the side of a borrowed pencil caused him to totally flip his shit, grab the pencil, break it, throw it in the trash, slap Hiroto across the face, grab him by the shirt, scream at him in his face, and then dump out the boy's backpack on the floor, searching for any other "toys," with CrossPoppingVeins on his forehead.
* HateSink: While other antagonists might have reasons for their behavior, he was nothing more than a petty asshole who mistreated his nephew out of nothing but spite.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Denied Amamiya everything but the barest necessities, yet he had no problem indulging in luxuries for himself and his family, especially after Hiroto died.
* {{Jerkass}}: He was a total prick to everyone, he just kept it limited to his nephew, but when the nephew was gone, he turned on his wife, son and employees. The last one led to him being sued and his business to collapse.
** JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Now living on the streets and waiting to die, he wishes for Van to come back, [[AssholeVictim so he can continue to take his frustrations on him like he used to]].
* LaserGuidedKarma: Used the inheritance and condolence money for the death of his nephew so he and his family could live a life full of indulgences they denied Van, only for their business to fail, turning their frustrations on each other, with him ending up as hobo on the streets and dying a meaningless death.
* NoNameGiven: He's never referred by his name, not that there's any need to know.
* NoodleIncident: When Van meets Darcia's parents in Talosheim, he mentions that they're the first grandparents he's ever met, as he was too young when his Japanese parents died, and this yahoo didn't even keep pictures of his own parents. Japan is a culture that takes filial piety, even beyond the grave, very, very seriously. The only reason one wouldn't keep memorial pictures of their parents is being exiled from the family, willingly or otherwise. [[MisplacedRetribution Did he take out his rage against them on Amemiya?]] [[HanlonsRazor Or was he always a brute to begin with, and that's why he was kicked out?]]
* SparedButNotForgiven: Vandalieu passed up the golden opportunity to curse him, along with his evil aunt and apathetic cousin, when visiting the gods of Earth in the company of Zuruwarn, but only because cursing this asshole would have tipped off Rodcorte and screwed up much bigger plans and goals.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: In two ways.
** Since he apparently had little to no impulse control, he blew through Amamiya's inheritance and condolence money in a hurry, ultimately leaving him a dumpster-diving hobo, wishing he could go back in time to when he had plenty of money to just throw around.
** With a HairTriggerTemper and unhealthy need to go around open-palm slapping someone in the face to deal with his rage, he realized too late that it only works on a helpless child who can't run or hide. His wife up and divorced him when he tried it on her, his son fled the house when he tried it on him, and his employees, even in Japan's notorious "our toxic workplace is our god" culture, being slapped in the face by an asshole boss is a bridge too far, and they sued, leaving him bankrupt, his business shut down facing heavy fines and criminal charges, and him homeless, going through dumpsters to find enough to eat.

[[folder: Amamiya's aunt and cousin]]
The unnamed aunt and cousin of Hiroto Amamiya.
----
* AbusiveParents: While she didn't physically abuse him like her husband, Amamiya's aunt constantly vented her frustrations on the poor kid verbally, which didn't help at all in his emotional development.
* AccompliceByInaction: Amamiya's cousin never tried to stop his parents from abusing Van, just being glad it wasn't him.
* TheDogBitesBack: The cousin didn't just take the abuse when his parents turned their frustrations on him, he fought back and left the house as soon as he graduated.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: Now a petty criminal and a future hobo, they wish Van would come back, [[AssholeVictim so they can continue to take their frustrations out on him like they used to]].
* LaserGuidedKarma: Used the condolence money for the death of Amamiya to live a life full of indulgences they denied to Van, only for their business to fail, turning their frustrations on each other, losing everything on bad investments and compulsive shopping, with her becoming a petty criminal to pay her gambling addiction, with the son taking a mediocre job, and who will most likely end up homeless like his father.
* NoNameGiven: Their names are also unknown, not that there's any need to know.
* SparedButNotForgiven: Like with his EvilUncle, Vandalieu skips over cursing these two because it would have screwed up bigger plans and goals by tipping off Rodcorte. The fact that Zuruwarn states they already got some nice LaserGuidedKarma doesn't hurt Van's feelings in the slightest.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: The unnamed cousin, without guarantors, is now stuck in a toxic, dead-end job with no other prospects, because he presumed Amamiya would always be there to be the focus of his parent's toxic behaviors and never prepared a contingency plan for when those behaviors would turn on him, and never bothered to do anything to try and make those behaviors stop when he had the chance.

[[folder:Death-Attribute researchers]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/researcher03.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:It's The Undead! RUN!]]The unnamed and numerous scientists and researchers who experimented on Vandalieu for all his life, until one of them accidentally killed him, come back to life using his magic and slaughter every researcher and guard on his path.
----
* BaldOfEvil: One of the researchers is bald in the manga, and he was an amoral bastard who treated Van as barely more than an animal. And even when Van is freed, is very rightly pissed and just killed his co-worker in front of him, all he does is give a SlasherSmile and be [[SkewedPriorities excited on how Van's new ability could be researched]]; Van kills him before he even finishes the thought, but his head still smiles.
* ForScience: They had no particular reason to treat Van the way they did, only their scientific curiosity.
* HateSink: They treated an innocent boy as nothing but a test subject to produce Death-attribute products, so their deaths are completely unmourned.
* KarmicDeath: Every scientist on the facility was slaughtered by the test subject they took advantage of almost all his life, with the other former test subjects becoming the Eighth Guidance and destroying their remaining facilities.
* NeverMyFault: None of them can understand why Experiment D-01 rampaged and sought to slaughter them, or what they could have possibly done to piss him off so much. It's especially bad with the newest "researcher" who struck him because none of the experiments he was subjected to provided any positive results, even shouting "who gave you permission to die?!" when he died as a result of the electric restraints getting turned up too high.
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: One researcher trying to surpass his predecessors increased the voltage on Van's restraints on his brain, accidentally killing him. This would lead to their deaths.
* NoNameGiven: They are never referred by name, Van never bothered to learn their names, and no one cares about it now that they're dead.
* OffWithHisHead: The bald researcher in the manga has his head graphically removed.
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: As they poked, prodded, and outright tortured "subject D-01" into more and more "Death Magic" abilities, they became more and more terrified that he'd use those abilities to retaliate, and so they slapped more and more restraints on him to keep him from retaliating, [[ExplosiveLeash including surgically placing bombs in his chest and brain]], eventually leaving him a paraplegic who couldn't even feed himself. Then one of the newest "researchers," desperate for results to outshine his predecessors, turns the "non-compliance" ElectricTorture too high, killing him. At this point, with nothing to lose, "subject D-01" retaliates, and graphically kills each and every one of these so-called researchers he comes across.
* VillainsWantMercy: Especially in the manga. As "Test subject D-01" was rampaging, the researchers all shamelessly begged for their lives. Pleading for him to stop, despite ignoring the many, many pleas of their victims.

[[folder:Banda]]
A copy Vandalieu made of himself out of un-materialized Demon King fragments and left on Origin to keep Mei Amemiya company when he had to return to Lambda. "Banda" soon finds himself permanently attached to Mei, and takes it upon himself to be her GuardianEntity.
----
* BondCreatures: He's bonded to Mei, and can't be more than fifty meters away from her.
* BroughtDownToBadass: He can't destroy souls nor has Vandalieu's insane amount of mana, but his mana level is still incredibly high, his body is also very resistant and can turn invisible.
* TheFettered: Tries to remain as human as possible for the sake of Mei.
* HumanoidAbomination: At first glance he looks like a human with four eyes, wearing a mask covered in open mouths even where his ears should be, a small black fur coat on his head and white hair. But the 'mask' is actually his face, the coat is actually an external membrane with fur growing from it. As for the inside, his arms are made from multiple bones and his body contains multiple skeletons, which were all supported by jointed legs and covered haphazardly in exoskeleton and carapace.
* LiteralSplitPersonality: While he has Van's memories and some personality traits, he now exists separately and has his own free will.
* NotSoImaginaryFriend: Mei's family thinks he's merely a product of the little girl's imagination.
* SuperToughness: Thanks to his body being made of Demon King Fragments, it's very difficult to harm him with anything besides Orihalcum. Not even shooting him in the eye will do much.
* TheComicallySerious: With a side of {{Cloudcuckoolander}}. When Mei is kidnapped, Banda gets distracted during his rescue attempt by wondering if there were any precursor signs that they had missed. Of course, given [[MookHorrorShow what was about to happen to the kidnappers]] there was no reason for him to be worried.

[[folder:The Four Champions]]
!!Zakkart
The Champion of Vida and leader of the Creation-oriented champions. Once a man named Sakado Keisuke, he was the manager of a small factory who considered committing suicide when he was summoned into Lambda. Unlike Bellwood, he was far more open-minded and believed the conflict wasn't as black and white as previously thought, convincing several Evil Gods to defect from the Demon King's side. He and the other four champions were killed by the Demon King, with the fragments of their souls being taken by Rodcorte into his system, creating an entirely new soul that would eventually reincarnate as Vandalieu.
----
* CameBackWrong: A desperate Vida tried to revive him using one of his inventions, but all she got was a soulless body with nothing more than residual thoughts and motions because Rodcorte swiped his actual soul fragments. The corpse fought for her loyally, but wasn't really Zakkart anymore.
* DivineParentage: His body was used by Vida to give birth to the Progenitors of the Vampire and Ghoul races.
* DrivenToSuicide: When he transmigrated to Lambda, he was putting his head in a noose, ready to kill himself, because his vehicle factory was being foreclosed.
* TheEngineer: Had several hobbies and knowledge that came in handy to fight the Demon King, like guns and even a rebirth machine.
* GenerationXerox: Many agree Vandalieu is the most similar to Zakkart of all the champions. Justified due to the fact that Vida had added the residual memories from his corpse to Vandalieu when she was redirecting his reincarnation.
* InVinoVeritas: While drunk he ranted that it was no fair Bellwood got all the women while he never got any female attention because he was stuck in his workshop all the time.
* {{Irony}}: Bellwood might have been the strongest fighter, but the Demon King considered ''him'' and the other creation-oriented champions the bigger threat.
* JackOfAllTrades: He was a forensics student with several hobbies that would come in handy in the war on Lambda.
* MistakenForPedophile: Posthumously. Van notes that, had Gufadgarn appeared alongside Zakkart in its young girl disguise, it would have looked bad for him. Zakkart's still living contemporaries are rather disturbed when Gufadgarn does a very bad job of explaining why it suddenly appears to be a little girl now.
* NonActionGuy: He wasn't a fighter, and even though he gave a good fight, there was no chance for him to defeat the Demon King and his army.
* OurFounder: The Vampire and Ghoul races descend from his unnamed twins that were birthed by Vida using his body.
* PosthumousCharacter: He's been dead for a hundred-thousand years, and what's left of his soul became a new person.
* PragmaticHero: Unlike Bellwood who tried to be a "perfect hero", Zakkart tried to use unorthodox methods to fight the Demon King's army, even if one of those ideas meant ''nuking'' the Demon King.

!!Ark
The Champion of Ricklent, whom she had a close teacher-student relationship. She and the other four champions were killed by the Demon King, with the fragments of their souls being taken by Rodcorte into his system, creating an entirely new soul that would eventually reincarnate as Vandalieu.
----
* ImmuneToMindControl: Thanks to Ricklent's protection, she was immune to any external effects on her mind, including those caused by illusions and poison.
* OutOfFocus: Not much is known about her when compared to Zakkart.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's been dead for a hundred-thousand years, and what's left of her soul became a new person.

!!Solder
The Champion of Peria, who gave her the power to share her thoughts, knowledge, and experiences with another in real time, which allowed her to coordinate with others in battle.
----
* OutOfFocus: Very little is known about Solder when compared to the other champions.
* ShrinkingViolet: She was a shy girl who didn't like macho men.
* PosthumousCharacter: She's been dead for a hundred-thousand years, and what's left of her soul became a new person.
* VibroWeapon: Her knowledge of science inspired Zorcodrio to vibrate his muscles to create electricity.

!!Hillwillow
The Champion of Botin, he brought knowledge of Japanese folklore into Lambda, which would inspire stories of ninjas and kunoichi among the Empusa and Arachne of subsequent generations.
----
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Thanks to Botin's Divine Protection, he could earn any creation-related Skill he saw within a single day.
* MegaManning: How his power worked.
* OutOfFocus: Very little is known about him when compared to the other champions.
* PosthumousCharacter: He's been dead for a hundred-thousand years, and what's left of his soul became a new person.

[[folder:Vampires]]
!!Sercrent Ozba
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sercrent_manga.png]]

A Noble-Born Vampire working for Gubamon who, for failing to take Vandalieu's existence seriously, was sent to kill the Dhampir under penalty of death. He is also the point of contact between the vampires and Thomas Palpapek.
----
* AnArmAndALeg: Borkus cuts off his arm and leg, and Van's magic prevents it from regenerating.
* ColdBloodedTorture: On the receiving end by his bosses for failing to take Van's existence seriously. Even with his healing ability, the mental scars remain.
* DeaderThanDead: The very first person to have it's soul destroyed by Vadalieu, and certainly not the last.
* ForTheEvulz: The primary reason he killed Vandalieu's father, and let Darcia go. He wanted the Alda extremists to hunt Darcia and her infant son for his personal amusement. He would live to regret it.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He and Eleanora could barely stand each other, and declared her a traitor the moment Eleanora seem to have a change of heart.
* VillainousBreakdown: When he realizes he can't win against Van, he begs for mercy and futilely tries to threaten him with his connections.
* YouHaveFailedMe: He would have been on the receiving end had he managed to return without killing Van.

!!Valen
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/valen.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Live on, my wife and child.]]
Vandalieu's father. A Subordinate-Vampire whose only outstanding feature was his resistance to sunlight, which Van inherits. He was killed for annoying his masters by falling in love with a non-vampire.
----
* DaywalkingVampire: He was the first vampire since Zorcodrio to naturally possess the Sunlight Resistance skill. Other than that, he was mostly unexceptional. Van inherited this resistance from him, meaning that even though he has grown to be more like a true vampire he hasn't gained the weakness to sunlight.
* DisappearedDad: Died protecting his wife and unborn child from the vampires under control of Gubamon and Birkyne.
* HappilyMarried: To Darcia, though it was a tragically short union.
* HenpeckedHusband: According to Darcia, she ran the household, and he liked it that way.
* HeroicSacrifice: Fought to his death so he could secure the escape of the very pregnant Darcia.
* LazyBum: What he used to be before marrying Darcia.
* LoveRedeems: Falling in love with and marrying Darcia turned him from a lazy, petty thug, into a man brave and noble enough to give up his life to protect his wife and unborn child.
* PosthumousCharacter: Long dead by the time the story starts.
* TheSchlubPubSeductionDeduction: He had two skills: Flirting and being outside under the sun despite being a vampire. As such, his main job was seducing women to get information.
