* ChameleonCamouflage: His Mark II armor.
* CoolBoard: During the time he wore his Mark I armor, which incorporated a skateboard into his arsenal. However, [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower the skateboard could also be used as a shield or as a weapon, with a wide concealed blade; it could also be modified for use as a snowboard.]]
* DarkAgeOfSupernames: His name came right of the 90's.
* DeathIsCheap: [[spoiler:He was killed by Nitro, along with several other New Warriors. Then ''ComicBook/ContestOfChampions2015'' [[DeathIsCheap brings him back from the dead]].]]
* DualWielding: His battle staves.
* {{Expy}}: Of ComicBook/{{Batman}}.
* FadSuper: His name, Mark I armor, and skateboard made him this. Dropped all but the name later on. Though he eventually got the board back long after the skateboard fad was dead, [[JustifiedTrope justifying]] that he didn't care how silly it seemed, the board was versatile and it worked.
* GadgeteerGenius: He made most of his inventions himself. Given that he's an {{Expy}} of ComicBook/{{Batman}}, this is not suprising.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Even ''the Punisher'' admits a skateboard is a remarkably useful item; it's a weapon, a shield, ''and'' a mode of transportation all in one, and the authorities won't even look twice at it because it's so commonplace.
* HiddenHeartOfGold: Had his moments of being a {{Jerkass}}. Yet his heart is always in the right place, and he's truly commited to helping people.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: As mentioned above, the skateboard can be used as a shield.
* ParentalAbandonment: Night Thrasher is initially driven by the murder of his parents when he was a child.
* ParentalSubstitute: He became a legal guardian to Rage after his grandmother had died. Also, in the third series, he adopted Zachary Smith Jr. (a.k.a. Microbe) after Zachary's father disowned him.
* PowerArmor: His armor, like that of most streel level heroes, is heavily fortified, resistant to bullets, and temperature proof.
* ScaryBlackMan: Generally averted. While he [[InvokedTrope invokes]] a terrifying appearance with his armor and harsh view on crime, he's still a protector of the innocent, a kind man, and a hero who avoids killing if he can.
* TheTeamNormal: The only one of the original New Warriors with no super powers.
* TokenMinorityCouple: With Silhouette, who's half-black, half-Cambodian, and disabled.
* WalkingArmory: The Mark I armor carries his skateboard, battle staves, knives, a garrote, icro surface-to-surface missles, and an uzi ([[RangedEmergencyWeapon used for emergencies]]). The Mark II armor carries battle staves, pepper spray, sleeping gas, blades, grappling wire, explosives, incendiaries, an extendable computer tap, and an emergency glider.

!!Angelica Jones / Firestar
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1096684_33_firestar_1_02.jpg]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' American
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutant
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''ComicBook/UncannyXMen'' #193 (May, 1985)

As a young mutant, Angelica was recruited by Emma Frost soon after her powers manifested. However, after being manipulated by fellow Hellion Empath and learning that the White Queen was training her into an assassin, Angelica struck out on her own and became a superhero. She spent years as a member of both the New Warriors and the Avengers, retired during the Civil War, and later joined the Young Allies. Although her experiences with Emma Frost led her to distance herself from the mutant community, she did briefly join the X-Men while teaching physics at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.
\
After the founding of the mutant nation of Krakoa, Angelica was one of the few mutants who did not relocate to the island nation and maintained her distance, in no small part due to Emma Frost's presence on the ruling Quiet Council and the distrust many mutants held towards Firestar for being a Avenger.
----
* AdaptationalSuperpowerChange: In ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManAndHisAmazingFriends'', she can control heat in any form. When she was brought into the comics, her powers were changed to the ability to manipulating microwave radiation.
* AmbiguouslyAbsentParent: Angelica's grandmother mentions in the first issue of Angelica's first solo series that she "lost" her mother, but the meaning of this is never clarified.
* BerserkButton: Being around Emma Frost is a good way to get Angelica pissed off after what Emma did to her. By the time Angelica has joined the X-Men officially, she passive aggressively makes it clear she still thinks Emma's a monster even if Emma wants to atone for her actions.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Firestar is the nicest girl of the group, but if any loved one or friend is threatened, she becomes fearsome.
* BreakTheCutie: Her two years under Emma's tutelage were extremely traumatic, as the White Queen brainwashed her, made her believe her powers were out of control and could kill those around her in an effort to isolate her, and tricked her into thinking she was responsible for killing her favorite horse at the academy's stables.
* CanonImmigrant: She first appeared in the ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManAndHisAmazingFriends'' TV series before making her way into the comics continuity.
* ComboPlatterPowers: Flight, microwave generation/manipulation/emission/immunity, psychic resistance, and the ability to see electromagnetic transmissions by broadcast systems.
* CursedWithAwesome: Originally, her powers would have made her sterile if she overused them. This was fixed by Hank Pym after she joined the Avengers.
* DoubleAgent: Is currently working as a double agent for Jean Grey and the X-men. Jean asked her to pose as a member of Orchis, after using her telepathy to make one of their higher-ups believe Firestar's been feeding him info all along.
* FieryRedhead: Angelica is a rather rare subversion. She's rather calm and reserved most of the time. However, when she was dealing with pent up stress, it did tend to come out all at once.
* FirstKiss: Shared hers with Sam Guthrie at a dance. Sadly, this was another part of Emma Frost's manipulation of her, with the White Queen having mentally encouraged them before psychically interrupting the kiss by declaring that Angelica was putting Sam's life at risk due to her powers.
* FlyingFirepower: Her powers are based on microwave manipulation, and she can fly.
* {{Mutants}}: Her origin story.
* NaiveEverygirl: When first introduced Angelica was naive and did not have any friends due to constantly moving. She quickly became a target for bullies at her new school and manifested her powers. Sadly, Emma Frost reached her just before Xavier did and spent nearly three years manipulating her in an effort to create a new assassin for the Hellfire Club, all while Angelica believed that Emma was her only true friend and cared for her wellbeing.
* NavelDeepNeckline: When she first joined the Avengers, Janet designed a new costume for her that had a v-shaped neckline that ended on her midriff. Angelica did ''not'' like it, not only because she preferred her more modest look, but just due to the general idea of the Avengers telling her how to dress. She later wore the costume but covered up that area with a black leotard.
* PlayingWithFire: Not exactly. Her powers are microwave-based and she absorbs electromagnetic energy to convert into microwaves that are superheated and produce a burning effect.
* PowerIncontinence: Despite fixing the sterility problem, her powers caused another problem - [[FromBadToWorse breast cancer]].
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Averted; she doesn't have the secondary powers need to protect herself, hence why she's so reluctant to use her powers. Hank Pym later helped her with this.

!!Vance Astrovik / Marvel Boy /Justice
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4256878_justice_01.jpg]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' American
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutant
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''Marvel Super-Heroes'' #18 (October, 1968)

* AbusiveParents: Arnold Astrovik, his father who beat him due to his son being a mutant. He also beat Vance’s mother. Eventually, Vance hits back with his telekinesis, which causes Arnold's death.
* AFatherToHisMen: When Justice takes his leadership role for the New Warriors, he cares too deeply about his friends and younger teammates. At one time when Speedball "died", it affected him emotionally in one of the old New Warriors issues.
* AlternateSelf: Has one in the form of Vance Astro, a.k.a. Major Victory, leader of the classic ComicBook/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy.
* AmbiguouslyJewish: Justice is half-Jewish, but it took many issues to mention and prove his Jewish background.
* AscendedFanboy: When Justice joined the Avengers, he spent most of his tenure either fanboying over getting to work with A-listers like Captain America, or berating himself over not measuring up to his childhood idols.
* BigBrotherMentor: Towards the younger New Warrior members.
* TheCape: Very much TheCape, he's very devoted to law and order, fights ForGreatJustice and is charismatic in his helping people.
* IncorruptiblePurePureness: Refuses to be sprung from jail when he's convicted of manslaughter for accidentally killing his father in self-defense. "I believe in the system, so I'm going to abide by it. Just because I have powers which would make it tempting to ignore the law — doesn't give me the right to."
* InSeriesNickname: "Super-Tights" by Nova.
* LegacyCharacter: To his alternate reality self [[ComicBook/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy Vance Astro]].
** TimeyWimeyBall: Because the classic incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy are honorary Avengers, Vance is the only member of the Avengers to be on the roster twice as the same person.
* MindOverMatter: He's not the physical type and thus relies heavily on his telekinesis, which can perform spectacular feats like flight, applying of pressure to anything, carrying people with him, and levitating objects with his mind.
** {{Flight}}: His telekinesis allows him to fly through sheer willpower.
** PsiBlast: One of his signature moves is a beam of telekinetic power [[HeadBlast shot from the forehead]].
* TheMole: He infiltrated the Upstarts to take them down from within under orders from Night Thrasher.
* {{Mutants}}: His origin story.
* MyGreatestFailure: In ''ComicBook/AvengersTheInitiative'', when the young recruit MVP died in the botched training; Justice was wrecked with guilt as he was responsible for recruiting him to Camp Hammond.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: After MVP's death, he got so fed up of the corruption and incompetence of the adults in Camp Hammond that he left the camp and formed his own team, composed of former New Warrior members acting as whistle-blowers calling themselves 'Counter Force' in ComicBook/AvengersTheInitiative. Unfortunately, they helped Norman Osborn's rise to power in the process.
* SomethingPerson: Marvel Boy.
* TookALevelInBadass: After doing a stint in the Vault for accidentally killing his father with his powers, Marvel Boy matured emotionally and learned to control his powers. This would eventually lead to him [[MeaningfulRename changing his name to Justice]] and leading the New Warriors.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: Was a former professional wrestler in the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation.

!!Robert "Robbie" Baldwin / Speedball / Penance

[[caption-width-right:300:[[labelnote:Click here to see as Penance]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/141835_92024_robbie_baldwin.jpg[[/labelnote]]]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' American
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutate
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''Amazing Spider-Man Annual'' #22 (May, 1988)

Created by Creator/SteveDitko, Robert "Robbie" Baldwin was just your average fun-loving teenager before getting caught in a freak lab accident that granted him kinetic-based superpowers. Calling himself ComicBook/{{Speedball}}, he became a teen crimefighter in the view of one of Ditko's more [[ComicBook/SpiderMan famous characters]]. He would go on to be one of the founding members of the ComicBook/NewWarriors.

However, the good times were not to last. During the filming of a reality show in Stanford, Connecticut, the New Warriors, in a battle with the villain Nitro, accidentally caused the deaths of over 600 innocent civilians, inadvertently kicking off the ComicBook/{{Civil War|2006}}. As the only survivor of the accident, Robbie was blamed by the public for what happened and was sent to prison.

Suffering from severe PTSD, and having lost control of his powers, Robbie fell into a depression and took to cutting himself (the only way he could still tap into his powers). Having sunk to his lowest point, he was contacted by Norman Osborn, then leader of the Thunderbolts who gave him an ultimatum: join the team, or rot in jail. Taking the offer, Robbie dropped himself in a new suit and took the name Penance.
----
* AlwaysLate: In the original comic book, Speedball was habitually late to team gatherings. It didn't help that the others lived around NYC while he lived in Connecticut.
* TheAtoner: He becomes Speedball again and joins the Avengers, as an instructor at ComicBook/AvengersAcademy, trying to give the students the proper guidance they need so that nothing like Stamford will ever happen again. He still has some issues to work through though (such as cutting himself).
* BarrierWarrior: As Speedball. As Penance, he is...
* TheBerserker: As Penance, in contrast to Speedball, who the BarrierWarrior.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: In his Speedball persona, he may look ridiculous with his costume, powers, and attitude, but he has proven himself a badass at times. When Hummingbird reads his mind in ''New Warriors'' Vol. 5 (when he's apparently back in full FunPersonified mode), she sees the deadly serious Penance persona warning her never to do that again.
* BigGuyLittleGuy: He was the little guy to Rage's big guy.
* BouncingBattler: Speedball could create a kinetic force field around himself that allowed him to bounce off obstacles at great speed, which he'd then use to knock out opponents with twice the force.
* BreakTheComedian: Previously the goofy, fun-loving leader of the New Warriors, the disastrous clash with Nitro and the ensuing death of his team (plus six hundred civilians) and all the traumas that follow, Speedball loses all traces of his humor and becomes the tortured antihero Penance. After a period spent in Penance's iron maiden-like suit, he finally recovers by forcing Nitro into the agonizing costume and arrests him, then adopts the cheerful persona of Speedball again.
* CharacterDevelopment: After becoming Penance as a harmful way of dealing with his grief, Robbie begins his tenure on the Thunderbolts as a sniveling wreck, nearly unable to even function, let alone be an asset on missions. Over the course of the run, he goes to a shrink and learns how to deal with his grief in a productive way, finally tearing down the mental blocks he had created preventing him from using his powers. By the time he has left the Thunderbolts (after Osborn is dethroned), he is back to his old self again. He manages to track down the one truly responsible for the Stanford disaster, Nitro, and forces him to wear the Penance suit as punishment for his crimes. While this does provide some karmic retribution, it does little to alleviate Robbie's grief, further reinforcing the message that the DarkerAndEdgier approach won't actually solve his problems, and only time and self-healing will.
* DarkerAndEdgier: As Penance, to an almost ridiculous extreme.
* DeathByAdaptation: The novelization of ''ComicBook/{{Civil War|2006}}'' sees him die alongside his teammates during the Stamford incident instead of becoming Penance.
* DependingOnTheWriter: Warren Ellis depicted him as a quiet, almost entirely shattered wreck. When Jenkins did him for a one-shot during Ellis' run, he wrote Robbie as just being apathetic and kind of ditzy.
* FunPersonified: Used to be this, until the Stamford incident. After a brief flirtation with DarkerAndEdgier, he seemed to bounce back entirely in the 2014 series, but it was quickly revealed that it was a mask, he was a StepfordSmiler[=/=]SadClown, and the deadly serious Penance persona was still underneath.
* HandBlast: His powers as Penance, [[PowerAtAPrice which would only work if he was in pain]], leading him to various forms of SelfHarm.
* HenshinHero: Robbie Baldwin transformed into Speedball whenever he absorbed any impact.
* InSeriesNickname: Because Robbie Baldwin has a short and scrawny physique, he is known as "Toothpick" by Nova (Richard Rider).
* MeaningfulRename: Speedball to Penance, but after he [[spoiler:finds Nitro, forces him to wear the Penance suit for his crimes, and has him arrested]] he's back to Speedball.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After the Stamford incident, courtesy of ComicBook/{{Civil War|2006}}, Speedball adopted the DarkerAndEdgier costume and outlook of Penance, blaming himself for the incident and becoming a psychological trainwreck. Later though, he gets better to an extent.
* OneSteveLimit: ComicBook/GenerationX had a team member named Penance who came and went long before Robbie took the name.
* PowerEchoes: When Robbie turns into Speedball, his voice echoes, befitting the kinetic nature of his powers.
* PrettyBoy: An ComicBook/TheUnbeatableSquirrelGirl [[https://www.ultimatecomics.com/shop/variants/unbeatable-squirrel-girl-16-125-natasha-allegri-variant-anad-marvel-2015/ variant cover]] portrays him as this.
* PsychoactivePowers: Revealed in the Creator/WarrenEllis run; after the Stamford disaster, Robbie discovered [[DiscardAndDraw his powers had changed]] and now only worked when he was in pain. Cue the iron maiden styled combat suit. Except, Doc Samson pointed out that people who cut themselves process pain abnormally; the adrenaline rush of self-mutilation triggers an endorphin reaction, in effect making them ''high''. Thus, his powers have the same trigger as always; he can't use them unless he's happy. As the FunPersonified character he had been before ComicBook/{{Civil War|2006}}, it makes some sense that this had previously not been noticed. Discovering this helps him start overcoming his depression.
* TheQuietOne: In stark contrast to his previous jokester attitude, Penance rarely ever speaks.
* ResetButton: By the end of ''ComicBook/DarkReign'', he is back to his Speedball persona. Considering how poorly his change to Penance was received, [[Administrivia/TropesAreTools this was probably for the best]]. See CharacterDevelopment above.
* SadClown: Behind the comedic Speedball persona, Robbie Baldwin is coping with his dysfunctional family background and recently the burden of his guilt from the Stamford incident.
* SelfHarm: Part of the fallout from the Stamford incident was him picking up this habit, with this Penance suit actually being powered by it. Even after he goes back to being Speedball he still does this to cope with his feelings of guilt.
* ShipTease: He's apparently the object of affection for both Hummingbird and Squirrel Girl. He's apparently humored Squirrel Girl's crush to some extent based on the note he left on an autographed picture for her in her own series, and in volume 5, asks Kaine if Hummingbird said anything about him - though the context makes it more likely he was asking if [[MotorMouth Hummingbird]] had revealed his still present darker side. Kaine is less than amused by both the question and Robbie's insistence on asking in the middle of a battle with High Evolutionary.
* SuperheroSobriquets: Speedball “The Masked Marvel”
* ThereAreNoTherapists: Averted, though not through lack of trying. Doc Samson is hired by Norman Osborn and assigned as Robbie's shrink, but only so as to fake his psych evaluation. Unfortunately for Osborn, Samson actually cared about Robbie's condition. He worked with Robbie for several months helping him come to terms with his grief, and helped him regain his Speedball powers (the latter of which he kept hidden from Osborn, hoping that Robbie would use his newfound confidence and returned abilities to undermine Osborn's schemes).
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: How Robbie Baldwin got his Penance powers. Basically, after he had survived the explosion but seemingly lost his Speedball powers, Robbie spent many days tormented in prison until the Penance powers came to life when he had a near-death experience from being shot on the way to court.
* YouFightLikeACow: Every time Speedball fights against the foes, he always jokes and blabbers away.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Speedball was about 15 when he joined the New Warriors, he looked like he was at least 18 or early 20s when he was in his superhero persona. When Chord told Speedball to drop his superhero stint and go undercover, he transformed back to the short, scrawny Robbie Baldwin much to the surprise of his teammates in the early issues. After joining the Thunderbolts, while he is over 18, due to the trauma he experienced in the months leading up to his transformation into Penance, he looks at least 10 years older.

* ComboPlatterPowers: Has enhanced speed, strength, agility, sensory perception, and shadow powers.
* HandicappedBadass: Silhouette's leg are crippled, but that's never prevented her from beating ass. She even had her boyfriend Night Thrasher build a bunch of weapons into her braces.

!!!'''Nationality:''' American
!!!'''Species:''' Human
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''New Warriors'' #28 (August, 1992)

* TheArtifact: The original premise of Turbo was that Mickey and Mike shared the suit, and so a story could feature either one at any given time. This was played into at first, with Mickey being the first Turbo to appeared, followed by Mike in the next story, but eventually it was phased out as Mickey took prominence between the two. Other than occasionally paying lip service to the idea, Mickey became the overall main Turbo in every story Turbo was featured in. This left Mike with nothing to do other than to occasionally appear alongside Mickey as a supporting character. It was likely for this reason why it was decided that he would be KilledOffForReal at the end of the run.
* AscendedExtra: Mickey only made sporadic appearances throughout the original ''New Warriors'' run by Fabian Nicieza, as she wasn't a core member until close to the end of his run. However, she became a main team member by Evan Skolnick's run for the remainder of the series, and took prominence especially at the end. ''New Warriors'' Vol. 2 has her as a main team member as well from the start, though that run was short-lived.
* AscendedFanboy: Comic book geek, Mike.
* BlowYouAway: Turbo can shoot gusts of wind with the armor.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Mike was only the main Turbo for two stories: The first being when he fought alongside the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man with the New Warriors themselves against the Darkling in the third ''New Warriors'' annual, and performed somewhat well for a rookie. The second time immediately afterwards, where Nova trained the two Turbos and was attacked by Cardinal just as Mike donned the armor, and didn't perform so well, needing to be bailed out by Mickey. Afterwards, Mickey became the de facto main Turbo of the New Warriors, who wanted her skill over Mike's enthusiasm.
* DistaffCounterpart: Both to each other, and Mickey to the original Torpedo.
* FlyingBrick: Turbo both flies fast and packs a mean punch.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Mickey never wanted to be a superhero, only putting up with it because [[CursedWithAwesome she was really good using the armor]].
* IJustWantToBeSpecial: Mike got to use the Torpedo Armor but not as much as Mickey and he actually does want to be a superhero.
* KilledOffForReal: In a sad [[ZigZaggingTrope zig-zagging]] of {{Retirony}}, Mickey was going to give up being Turbo and let Mike take over full time. The Dire Wraiths (old enemies from the original Torpedo) kill Mike as Turbo and feeling guilty, Mickey strove to be the hero Mike would have (at least until she co-created the Loners).
* LegacyCharacter: Of the character, Torpedo from ComicBook/ROMSpaceKnight.
* MsFanservice: Mickey as Turbo in the original run is very attractive, well-built, well-endowed, and wears a skin-tight bodysuit that highlights everything. Her beauty is frequently commented on by other characters, with Speedball openly having a crush on her. This is greatly lessened by ''Loners''.
* MundaneUtility: Before meeting the Warriors, Mickey used the suit to travel the world and shop.
* PowerArmor: The Torpedo Armor which Mickey and Mike took turns to use.
* SurvivorsGuilt: Mickey was absolutely horrified when Mike died, and felt personally responsible for it. She vowed to keep being Turbo in order to be the superhero Mike always wanted to be in his honor.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Mickey and Mike share a lot of snark and bickering with each other, but ultimately are very close.
