The HomeBase of our heroes.
[[folder:In general]]
[[quoteright:704:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sanaeandfriends.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:704:Left to right: Danji, Kento, Manabu, Sanae, Ochame, Tanosuke, Jiro and [[TeamPet Tonsuke]]]]
* AllLovingHero: All of them are loving, innocent youths at the core, especially Kento and Sanae, who don't care how much they're scrapped and scarred - they'll continue to believe there is good in everyone.
* CheerfulChild: With the exception of Danji, they're all enthusiastic and hopeful children.
* ChildrenAreInnocent: Absolutely none of them are prepared for war, thus resulting in Earl having to train Kento and Danji as pilots, while Manabu helps construct weaponry at the base and Sanae and Ochame help keep it clean. The rest aren't often action-inclined and usually watch from the sidelines. Quite a few episodes also focus on their respective traumas from the war, including ParentalAbandonment.
* ColorCodedCharacters:
** Kento = Red.
** Danji = Blue.
** Sanae = Pink.
** Tanosuke = Dark Green.
** Jiro = Light Green.
** Manabu = Light Blue.
** Ochame = Light Pink.
* ConvenientlyAnOrphan: All their parents died when the Zaal Empire invaded. As standard practice for any planet they invade, they caused mass destruction across Earth's terrae, reducing the population to only a lucky number of survivors.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Most of their families were wiped out by the Zaal, and they had to resort to different ways to survive. Then there are cases like Danji's where they lost their families to the cruelty of other humans.
* DeceasedParentsAreTheBest: Kento and Sanae's parents are explicitly shown to have been killed by the Zaal. With Tanosuke, Jiro, Manabu and Ochame, it's stated but never shown. Danji, on the other hand, was raised by a single father who was hanged for a crime he didn't commit.
* GoodIsDumb: And ''how''. They're ignorant of obvious traps, don't bother to cover their tracks after committing crimes and rebuff Earl's well-meaning advice. The biggest example was when they received a letter from someone asking to adopt Ochame. ''No one'' in the group thought it was a bad idea to allow a complete stranger to adopt a six-year-old girl and willingly allowed it after meeting said adoptive parent once. The lady who kidnapped her happened to be a Zaal General in disguise, who holds Ochame hostage. Luckily, they manage to save her.
* HomeBase: The Adalus base, which is also Earl's former spaceship, houses the kids and trains them for war.
* HotBloodedSideburns: Kento and Danji are aggressive in their own ways and have these. Kento's are thick and prominent when he's in action, while Danji's are hidden, and his [[HidingBehindYourBangs bangs]] are more prominent.
* KidHero:
** Manabu is 12, but restored a city from ruin using his genius and also invented Gamelot.
** Ochame is 8 and and Jiro is 9. They travel in Gamelot, which is occasionally co-piloted by Tanosuke, and help Daltanious in battle.
* KidAppealCharacter: Again, all of them. They may be heroes, but they also express desires to enjoy their childhoods like regular kids.
* PerpetualSmiler: Kento because he's an IdiotHero, Sanae because she's a NiceGirl, and the children because ChildrenAreInnocent. Danji is the exception.
* PromotedToParent: After their families died, Kento and Sanae had to become to this to Ochame, Jiro and Manabu, [[SarcasmMode yay]]! Though, they dearly love the children and wouldn't trade them for the world.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The heroes are a bunch of quirky kids who lost their parents in the Zaal invasion, with Kento being the TeamDad and Sanae being the TeamMom.
* RedOniBlueOni: While Kento is quick to act on instinct, loud-mouthed, brash and has a bit of a [[{{Narcissist}} complex]], Danji approaches situations with a calm head, is quiet, stoic and humble. Despite this, they still have somethings in common, like being unapologetically stubborn and violent.
* TheFellowshipHasEnded: Averted. [[spoiler: In the end of the anime, while Harlin and Earl choose to stay in the Galactic Federation, Kento decides to stay on Earth with his friends and help rebuild it from ruins.]]
* TwoGirlsToATeam: Sanae and Ochame. They are mere [[SatelliteCharacter Satellite Characters]] to their male counterparts.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Of the orphans, Kento and Danji are the ones that frequently clash. They're forced to work together because Danji pilots the Gunper and Kento pilots Atlaus; the two have to fuse with Beralios to form Daltanious.

[[folder:Kento Tate]]
!!'''Kento Tate (楯剣人)'''
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ToshioFurukawa, Kazuko Sugiyama [[note]](child)[[/note]] (Japanese) [[labelnote:Other Languages]]Massimo Rossi (Italian), Carlos Romero Franco (Latin American Spanish)[[/labelnote]]
The main character, a hot-blooded, foul-mouthed 15-year-old boy who makes a living by selling things on the black market. Left orphaned by the war, he's become a cynical person and often acts selfishly. When Kento is recruited to be the hero of Daltanious, he's forced to challenge his worst traits so that he can succeed the throne of the Helios Empire.

[[caption-width-right:770:[[labelnote:As a child]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/youngkento.jpg[[/labelnote]]]]

* AlienPrince: Very early into the series, he learns that he's descended from the King of the Helios Empire - a.k.a., the very Empire Earl is from - and is next in line to the throne. Kento rejects all claims to royalty, wanting to live a normal human life, and gets irritated when Earl calls him "Kento-[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics sama]]".
* ArchEnemy: Kloppen is this, because he led the same invasion that claimed the lives of his parents, his friend's parents, and the lives of several innocent human beings. When they meet in-person for the first time, Kento gives him an earful about how much he despises him.
* AttentionWhore: In episode 8, as a result of being famed in-universe for being the pilot of Daltanious, Kento is hailed by the townspeople and treated like a king. Kento doesn't let this go to waste and eagerly absorbs all words of praise and affection, allowing the crowd to carry him on a tarp while singing his praises. The half-lidded eyes and dopey grin he has during the whole thing really sells it.
* AwesomeMcCoolname: His name is literally "Swordsman Shield".
* BigEater: Kento loves food and bonds with the RagtagBunchOfMisfits over it. Unsurprisngly, in a post-apocalyptic world, he makes ends meet by stealing it to survive.
* BookDumb: He tells Earl that he's glad the Zaal Empire invaded because that means he doesn't have to go to school anymore. He neglects improving his skills as a pilot and learning Helios' cultural history in favour of playing with the RagtagBunchOfMisfits and everyone else in the village.
* CallingTheOldManOut: He condemns Earl for his callous attitude towards Ochame and also hits him in the face with an apple for saying "she's just some Earthling".
-->'''Kento:''' ''"If Ochame is just some Earthling, then I'm just Kento Tate!"''
* CantTakeCriticism: To everyone, but especially towards Earl. He views Earl's attempts to teach him as "criticism" and even runs away from the base because he can't stand to hear him, though he comes back in time to fight the MonsterOfTheWeek.
* ChickMagnet: As he's FamedInStory, he's got multiple female admirers, and it's also implied Sanae likes him. Catine also counts, but she's a GoldDigger.
* ChildOfTwoWorlds: [[spoiler: His father is actually Prince Harlin, or, as he was known on Earth, "Hayato Tate".]] He rejects his Heliosian heritage and proudly calls himself a human, even if he acknowledges that he's the descendant of Emperor Palmillion and heir to the throne. He has no interest in Heliosian culture or politics, despite Earl's constant attempts to pigeonhole him into them, and openly calls it stupid and ridiculous. Part of the reason he takes his human heritage so seriously is because after his father's disappearance, he was raised by his grandfather Kazuto Tate, who was fully human and the boy's greatest hero.
* {{Determinator}}: Kento once beat off a pack of wolves with a stick while barely being able to move out of a desire to see Sanae again.
* DisappearedDad: Kento's father, Hayato, was a sailor. When he was four, Hayato went missing while he was on one of his regular sea expeditions. [[spoiler: By the time he returns, three-fifths of his family (Kimiyo, Kazuto and his daughter) have already died, leaving Kento as the SoleSurvivor.]]
* DramaticIrony: [[spoiler: Kento is accused of being a clone by Kloppen, and turned away from many potential allies as a result. It's later revealed that Kloppen is a clone]].
* DrivenToSuicide: After facing humiliating defeat at the hands of Kloppen, Kento starts hearing voices in his head of his deceased mother and sister, telling him to join them in death. At one point he even hears ''Sanae's'' voice tell him to pull the trigger on himself. He shoots himself, but misses, and then decides that it isn't worth it to die and that he has to continue living.
* {{Expy}}: Take [[Anime/VoltesV Kenichi]], drop his IQ by 400 points, add in {{Jerkass}} and BigEater attributes. That's Kento. They're both HotBlooded pilots of CombiningMecha that primarily [[RedIsHeroic wear red]]. [[spoiler: Both of their fathers were [[AlienPrince Alien Princes]] forced to flee their home planets because of turmoil, while their mothers were human women from Japan, making them [[HalfHumanHybrid Half-Human Hybrids]]. In the GrandFinale of both anime, they put an end to the fascist empires that caused their fathers to flee in the first place. Their fathers also reinstate themselves as the rulers of the new empires and begin a new era of peace and tranquility. Yeah, even their fathers are [[{{Expy}} Expies]]!]]
** Even his physical appearance is near-identical to Kenichi's, with his wide black eyes, short/unkempt black hair and HotBloodedSideburns combined with the fact that he primarily dresses in red.[[note]]Unsurprising when you remember that they have the same character designer, Yuki Hijiri.[[/note]]
* ExtremelyProtectiveChild: He vehemently rejects a duel Kloppen proposed between him and [[spoiler: Harlin]]. When [[spoiler: Harlin]] insists that he should do it, Kento offers to fight in his stead.
* FamedInStory: After Daltanious began repelling Kloppen's robots, word spread of an Earthern robot fighting the Zaal tyranny to other planets, inspiring them to start several rebellions. Even on Earth, Kento receives a lot of fan mail and public support for his position as Daltanious' pilot.
* FriendToAllChildren: Before he discovered Daltanious, Kento and Sanae spent their days trying to make sure the orphans had enough to eat and were taken care of. After he's FamedInStory, he shares the rewards of being famous with them as well.
* GoodIsNotNice: Kento is prone to insulting people if they suggest anything that could be read as a personal attack on his ego, and lets the fame of being the pilot of Daltanious go to his head.
* TheGunslinger: When he's not piloting Daltanious, his main weapon is a gun. It's implied he self-taught himself how to use one.
* HalfHumanHybrid: [[spoiler: His father, Hayato Tate, is actually Prince Harlin of the Helios Empire, while his mother, Kimiyo, was a human. This makes his sister one too, but she's deceased by the start of the story.]]
* HandicappedBadass: Situational example - after he's badly battered and bruised by the Zaal's foot soldiers, he's so weak that he requires a staff to walk. [[{{Determinator}} And then he uses it to fight off a pack of wild wolves so he can have their morsel to eat.]]
* HeritageDisconnect: Kento rejects his Heliosian heritage at every turn. The opposite can be said of his Japanese side - his grandfather was a traditional Japanese kite painter, something the boy took great interest in.
* TheHero: Not a very virtuous one, as the first few episodes spell. But [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold when he shines, he shines]].
* HotBlooded: The dim-witted kind. He is always up for a fight, prone to overreacting to criticism and the children's well-meaning-but-rough TeamDad.
* IdiotHero: He often writes off helpful advice as "annoying" and acts on his impulses. He's also prone to moments of selfishness, and acts on his own interests rather than what's helpful for humanity as a whole.
* InTheBlood: [[spoiler: Both Kento and his father are {{Alien Prince}}s who reject their royal privileges in favour of universal equality, and demand to be treated just like any other ordinary civilian]].
* {{Jerkass}}: He's frequently rude to all his friends, he puts down Earl who wants the best for him, the local townspeople hate him because he steals from them and incites chaos, and he's HotBlooded to the point nearly any attempt to talk with him ends in a screaming match.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** In the first episode, Sanae tells him off for stealing, saying he should work honestly and get a real job instead. She has no response when Kento replies that honesty won't fill their stomachs.
** While he's often rude to Earl, he's also a fifteen year old boy, and for Earl to put the burden of piloting a SuperRobot/managing Helios' messy politics on a child is ridiculous.
** He often calls out Earl's LackOfEmpathy, and is angered when Earl displays a lack of care for small children like Ochame and Jiro.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: (See GoodIsNotNice above) Let it be known that even if Kento can be a selfish, feisty, attention-seeking little runt, he genuinely cares about people and struggles with his [[ParentalAbandonment own]] [[YouKilledMyFather demons]]. Yes, he is an unpleasant at times, but there isn't a single person he's met who's life hasn't improved since meeting him, and he'll sacrifice his own happiness if it means peace for the entire galaxy.
* JustifiedCriminal: He only steals food because he's an orphan child, and he doesn't want him and his fellow orphans to go to bed hungry. He also lives in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, so going to food banks and charity organizations isn't an option.
* TheLeader: Of the RagtagBunchOfMisfits, alongside Sanae. In another sense, he's also the Prince of the Heliosians, but he denies this.
* PrincessInRags: He's an AlienPrince who passes his days stealing and looting to survive.
* RebelliousPrincess: The crux of his disagreements with Earl. He spent most of his life believing he was an ordinary human boy. When he managed to revive Beralios from his slumber, Earl realized the boy was descended from Emperor Palmillion, the last ruler of his long-destroyed planet, the Helios Empire, he tried to repare the boy for being the nation's future ruler. Kento hates this, often reacts by screaming at Earl, calling him an old man, and screwing up his royal image.
* RedIsHeroic: All his costumes have some form of red on them, from his red shirt as a civilian, or his red spacesuit.
* RichesToRags: Kento was once a moderately rich boy who lived in downtown Tokyo with his mother and sister. They ran a supermarket, and never had to worry about food insecurity. Come 1995, the Zaal Empire invaded and left Earth in ruins, and a now-motherless and sisterless Kento has to resort to stealing food to survive.
* ShipperOnDeck: When Earl tells him Beralios had a female companion, he coos his support for them.
* TeamDad: While Sanae takes on a motherly role for the kids, Kento steals food for them, teaches them how to play rough and goes out to save them when they're in danger.
* UnfortunateNames: ''Tate''. He also mans a SuperRobot that has attacks powered by "Sigma Energy", including the "Sigma Beam".
* UnsympatheticComedyProtagonist: In line with Daltanious' DenserAndWackier setting, Kento is more selfish and childlike compared to his predecessors in the Anime/RobotRomanceTrilogy. He doesn't take his mission seriously, often argues with his friends, refuses to see other people's perspectives and CantTakeCriticism. While EveryoneHasStandards and [[spoiler:he refuses to take Kloppen as a hostage when the Zaal betray him]], he's still an impulsive dim-wit who needs a lot of CharacterDevelopment to properly become the Galaxy's IconOfRebellion through the titular SuperRobot.
* VerbalTic: Tends to react with "なぁんたること!"[[note]]"whatever!"[[/note]] to Earl.
* WouldHurtAChild: Kento smacks Jiro ''hard'' because he teased him for being fed by a Princess.
* YouKilledMyFather: The Zaal Empire murdered his mother and sister. [[spoiler: Eventually, Kento forgives Kloppen, the man responsible for their deaths, because he sees that Kloppen is trying to change.]]

[[folder:Danji Hiiragi]]
!!'''Danji Hiiragi (柊弾児)'''
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YoshitoYasuhara (Japanese) [[labelnote:Other Languages]]Oliviero Dinelli (Italian), Sergio Aguirre (Latin American Spanish)[[/labelnote]]
Kento's best friend, a fellow orphan who's skill lies in throwing stones. He doesn't speak much, and has a shockingly tragic past.
----

[[caption-width-right:770:[[labelnote:Suited, without helmet]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/danji3.png[[/labelnote]]]]

* AcePilot: When Danji pilots the Ganper for the first time, he's terrible at it and nearly hits Kento. It takes a few episodes for him to learn the ropes and become this trope.
* AffectionateNickname: He calls Sanae "Sanae-san", which indicates he greatly respects her.
* BerserkButton: Insulting his father and calling him a "criminal". Even after Earth is ravaged by the Zaal, he never stops searching for ways to prove his innocence.
* BlueIsHeroic: Danji is blue-coded to Kento's red, and he pilots the Ganper, which helps form Daltanious.
* DubNameChange: Danji became '''Danny''' in the Italian dub.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: Fitting to his closed-off nature, Danji's hair is styled this way.
* HotBlooded: Danji has this in common with Kento. While he appears to be the TheQuietOne amongst the RagtagBunchOfMisfits, he's a different person when he's enraged. [[spoiler: When he finds the man who committed the crime his father was hanged for, he screams at him to turn himself in and behaves in a way that he's never acted before. This doesn't stop him from feeling sad for his death.]]
* HotBloodedSideburns: While he is the blue oni, he's just as passionate to protect the Earth as Kento and has these.
* IOweYouMyLife: Sanae once saved him when he was injured, something he never forgets.
-->'''Danji:''' ''"Sanae-san, I won't let you die... Just like you helped me, now it's my turn to help you."''
* MoralityPet: His is Sanae. She is the chain that holds him back from letting his wrath consume him and harm others, and it is implied he has feelings for her.
* TheQuietOne: In contrast to the loud Kento, Danji often speaks in one liners. He's also aloof towards the group of orphans Kento and Sanae care for.
* SinsOfOurFathers: His father was hanged for a crime he didn't commit, and Danji spent years trying to prove his innocence. [[spoiler: He eventually finds the man who committed the crime his father was hanged for, who expresses great remorse at what he's done. He has since become TheAtoner and donated his eyesight to a disabled young boy.]]
* SourOutsideSadInside: Danji isn't a {{Jerkass}} like Kento, but due to witnessing heavy trauma at a young age, he's aloof and barely shows emotion. Only the kind Sanae can get him to speak and interact with others in a genuine manner.
* VitriolicBestBuds: With Kento. Both are HotBlooded young men, and because of that their ideals tend to clash, but Kento is more of an IdiotHero while Danji is reserved, though he has a hidden temper.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Sanae Shiratori]]
!!'''Sanae Shiratori (白鳥早苗)'''
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KeikoHan (Japanese) [[labelnote:Other Languages]]Creator/LauraBoccanera (Italian), María Elena Molina (Latin American Spanish)[[/labelnote]]
A kind-hearted girl who cares for Kento, Danji and the RagtagBunchOfMisfits left orphaned after the war. She acts motherly towards them and is disgusted by all kinds of violence. She often calls out Kento and Danji when they are misbehaving.
----

[[caption-width-right:770:[[labelnote:Past]]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/youngsanae.png[[/labelnote]]]]

* ActualPacifist: Extreme case. In one episode, some thieves steal her kimono. When an angry Danji is ready to use his fists on them , she tells them that she can't stand to see him violent, and instead offers herself up as a target.
-->'''Sanae:''' ''"If you must hit anyone out of your anger, hit me!"''
* ADayInTheLimelight: In episode 12, it's revealed how she lost her parents to the Zaal, and how she met Kento, Danji and the other children. When she was a young schoolgirl, the Zaal invaded, and Sanae tried to enter a burning building to save her parents, but was held back by two other civilians, who knew that it was futile as the building was already crumbling. Sanae was forced to watch her parents die, while screaming. In another flashback, it's shown that she bonded with Ochame over being a [[AbandonedWarChild War Orphans]], and asked if she wanted to live with her. Kento, who had just come back from his ransacking food with his gang, noticed the two girls and offered them some of his stock. Sanae was against it because of the fact that it was stolen, but Ochame eagerly accepted the candy bar he offered. She met Danji when she found him injured on the ground, and took him to Kento's base so that he could be treated. She was the first person Danji saw when he awoke, and he thanked her for saving his life.
* AffectionateNickname:
** Danji calls her "Sanae-san".
** Because she's a FriendToAllChildren, the neighbourhood kids call her "Big Sis".
* BettyAndVeronica: Sanae is innocent and caring (Betty); Catine is wild and adventurous (Veronica). However, none of them end up with Kento.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Even Sanae isn't above [[https://cdn.clipkit.co/tenants/1415/item_images/images/001/231/576/medium/9eefc75b11c3ac6ced9044f13d2f6c55.jpg?1469207330 reprimanding]] Kento for his bratty behaviour.
* CoolBigSis: She's seen as this because she helps care for the children and teaches them household skills.
* EmbarrassingNickname: When Catine enters the Adalus Base for the first time, she's surprised to see that Kento has a female companion with him. Threatened by the prospect of Kento loving someone else, she asks if Sanae is his "servant girl", making her angry. When Kento says that she isn't, Catine snidely remarks that she would have thought Sanae was his servant girl anyway because of how poor she looks.
* {{Expy}}: Appearance only. She's [[Anime/VoltesV Megumi]], if [[AdaptationalWimp she wasn't a ninjutsu practitioner]] {{Tomboy}} and her hair was brown instead of blue.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: Her specialty is cooking and housework.
* FlatCharacter: Sanae's personality is essentially the sole NiceGirl in a world full of HotBlooded idiots. She's very girly, likes to cook and clean, and does the chores and housework of the Adalus Base. She also restrains Kento and Danji when their tempers overtake them and she's pacifistic to the highest degree. She almost never, ever gets mad.
* FlowersOfFemininity: One of her hobbies is picking flowers.
* GirlishPigtails: Tied up with a big pink bow.
* ILetGwenStacyDie: She had to watch her parents die, and encountered numerous wounded civilians while trying to survive herself. She would try to save them with her limited knowledge of medicine, but wasn't always successful.
* IllGirl: In her ADayInTheLimelight episode, Sanae contracts a Heliosian virus that even ''Earl'' doesn't have the cure for. When he informs Kento that it has a 70% fatality rate, all of the Adalus base children are aghast. Luckily, she is saved when Danji sticks his knife into the Bemborg and pours it's blood into a cup, which Earl turns into a cure.
* InnocentFanserviceGirl: Sanae is oblivious to how much of her skin her bikini reveals, and presents herself to Kento with a smile.
* TheMedic: Her late parents were doctors, so Sanae wants to follow in their footsteps and become one herself. She specializes in healing all types of injuries, and will often clean up the boys after a nasty brawl.
* MissFanservice: Sanae wears a two-piece skimpy bikini that shows off a lot of her body. It consists of a hot-pink bra with thin strings around her back, and a hot-pink skirt that barely covers her thighs.
* NiceGirl: Sanae is welcoming to all and frequently puts others before herself. When she learned that a guest was coming to the Adalus base, she personally picked flowers to decorate his room, warming his heart.
* PinkIsFeminine: Her bow, her civilian outfit and her bikini are all pink.
* PromotedToParent: Sanae lost her own parents in the invasion and is surprisingly not too beat up about it[[note]]The only time we see her upset about it is when the virus she's infected with forces her to dream about their death[[/note]], happily fulfilling a maternal figure role to her fellow orphaned children.
* SatelliteCharacter: Sanae orbits around Kento and Danji, and her most significant action in the story is making sure they don't kill themselves (or each other) with their recklessness. Any time the spotlight is on her, it's to emphasize that she enjoys doing stereotypically feminine things, such as cooking and cleaning, for the Adalus base.
* ShipTease:
** Jiro suggests that Sanae is jealous of the attention that Kento gets from Catine because she likes him. Conversely, Kento often has [[ImagineSpot Imagine Spots]] of her.
** Danji tends to stare at her [[LongingLook longingly]]. He risks traversing the innards of a Bemborg just to find a cure for her illness. She is one of the few people he is genuine to.
* TeamMom: As per her [[FlatCharacter characterization]], Sanae is the polar opposite of Kento's passionate, [[HotBlooded hot-blooded]] TeamDad. She has no interest in fighting and opts to watch from the sidelines, being happy to fulfill whatever menial tasks the Adalus base requires her to do.
* TheNotLoveInterest: While there's plenty of ShipTease between her and the boys, she never canonically ends up with anyone.
