----
[[folder:General Tropes]]
* AdaptationalBadass: Downplayed but apparent, as the ''Undertale'' monsters carried an immense vulnerability to physical impacts and killing intent to a point where a lone human child could outfight and overpower all of them. In Deltarune however, while they aren't invincible, monsters are significantly less vulnerable to physical impact than their ''Undertale'' counterparts and are implied to be physically, at least, mostly comparable to humans. For instance, in any fight against another Lightner, while it's possible to deplete their HP, it doesn't cause their death (through normal circumstances, at least).
* AdaptationalHeroism: While every monster in ''Undertale'' was an AntiVillain to begin with, none of their ''Deltarune'' incarnations ever show any intent to harm Kris for being a human, and besides some criminals running about, most of the monsters here are kinder and more passive than they were originally.
* AlternateSelf: The returning characters are this to their ''Undertale'' counterparts, with different occupations and no recollections of what happened in the Underground; Asriel is in college and definitely not a flower, Sans is meeting Toriel for the first time, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking Alphys prefers Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2 over Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 1]].
* DemotedToExtra: None of the returning characters have any focus in the main story for the first two chapters.
* HumansByAnyOtherName: As well as "Monsters By Any Other Name"; Darkners recognize entities from the Light World as Lightners, a term that applies to both humans and monsters.
* LikeAGodToMe: Ralsei and Seam state that service to the Ligthtners was[=/=]is the defining purpose of Darkners, with the latter outright comparing them to gods. These days, the view on this varies.
-->'''Seam:''' Our protectors. Our creators. Those who gave us purpose...
* OddlySmallOrganization: The police force appears to be comprised of just Undyne and Napstablook, though Asgore is mentioned to be the former chief of police. Then again it ''is'' just a small town.

[[caption-width-right:168: ''"Kris, if you do not wake up, we will be late for school!"'']]

Kris and Asriel's mother. She is also a teacher for a younger class at the school.
----
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: It's implied the reason Toriel didn't punish Kris for eating the pie she made in the start of Chapter 2 was because Kris [[RefugeInAudacity did so in such an over-the-top way]] that she couldn't help but find it humorous.
* AngerBornOfWorry: Toriel becomes very concerned when Kris didn't leave school on time, and scolds Kris if they call her on the phone.
* CallingOutForNotCalling: Her first reaction after school is out is to admonish Kris for not calling Toriel to tell her where they were. She drops it when Kris tells her they were hanging out with a friend.
* ContinuityNod: In Kris' specially designed cell in Queen's castle, you can spot two tiny Toriels playing the piano, both wearing the original purple robe she sported back in ''Undertale''.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Undertale'', she was the first boss and a major introduction to the themes of violence, mercy, and the game's relationship with the fourth wall. Here, she's just your character's mother and, as of Chapters 1 and 2, has no real plot significance. However, the end of Chapter 2 implies she will have a bigger role in the next chapter, as the Dreemurr house is swallowed up by a dark fountain created by the soulless Kris, with Toriel inside.
* EmptyNest: She's worried that when Kris eventually leaves to go to college, she'll be alone, so she understandably changes the subject to happier times when her kids were younger.
* {{Facepalm}}: She has one after realizing Kris ate her [[RunningGag butterscotch-cinnamon]] pie during the night.
* FormerTeenRebel: Was apparently a party animal in her youth, according to Rudolph Holiday.
* GoodParents:
** She dotes on Kris, letting them sleep in, and only punishes them with an early bedtime for staying at school too late with a friend.
** She also loosens up a little around Susie, going out of her way to help her be more comfortable in the Dreemurr household, and even says a light swear around her.
* GospelMusic: Toriel's deeply religious and loves to listen to hymns and prayers.
* TheMaidenNameDebate: She keeps Asgore's last name despite being separated from him. If you call home with Kris' cellphone in the epilogue of Chapter 1, Toriel will answer the phone with "The Dreemurr residence," despite Asgore no longer living there. This contrasts her Undertale counterpart, where she's normally ashamed of the name.
* MoralityPet: Susie is very respectful towards her. Even before her CharacterDevelopment in Chapter One, she considers Toriel to be a good mom, and if Kris tries to leave school, she'll tell them not to, because their mother would "have a heart attack."
* MyBelovedSmother: She dotes on Kris constantly. Not being able to account for where they are for a few hours prompts her to threaten punishment, until they explain they were [[SoProudOfYou spending time with a friend]]. Not to mention she leads Kris into school by the hand despite Kris seeming to be about middle-school age.
* MythologyGag: Her teacher occupation is one. In ''Undertale'', Toriel mentions that she always wanted to be a teacher and gets to do just that in the True Pacifist ending.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Despite her mother-like nature, she isn't above swearing, and she doesn't backpedal when she does so since the main protagonists in this game are teenagers.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: PlayedForLaughs. At the end of Chapter 2, she yells out loud that she wants to know what the [[PrecisionFStrike hell]] Kris is doing, with the comedy coming out of Susie seeing Toriel curse come across as unlike her motherly demeanor.
* ParentalFavoritism: While she's very doting on and concerned for Kris, there's lots of little signs around the house that Asriel is the favoured child between the two of them for Toriel. It's probably not out of any malice or neglect on her part and probably has more to do with Asriel being TheAce who casts a very long shadow on his seemingly EmptyShell of a sibling.
* PrecisionFStrike: When Kris takes a while to return from the bathroom at the end of Chapter 2, her patience starts to run thin and she wonders where the '''hell''' is Kris out loud. [[FunnyBackgroundEvent Susie, thinking Toriel's a pretty swell kinda straightforward mom deal, freaks out a little.]]
* PushoverParents: Downplayed, but her punishments towards Kris' misdeeds tend to be rather light. In Chapter 1, she simply sends Kris to bed early after the latter comes home late from school without so much as calling. In Chapter 2, she doesn't even so much as scold them when it's revealed that they ate all the pie she made, despite being told not to. Later in the chapter, she doesn't seem to be worried about Kris'... dissociative problems, only telling Susie that "[they do] this sometimes".
* SoProudOfYou: She's nothing short of delighted that her youngest child Kris is making friends with Susie.
* SuppressedRage: Toriel does ''not'' appreciate Asgore using Kris as a proxy to deliver flowers; she comments that she'll "find a good place" for the flowers. This place is the trash bin in the house.
* YouKnowWhatYouDid: She mutters a variant on seeing Asgore's bouquet.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Asriel]]
!!Asriel
->''"After the excitement of university... Will he still enjoy coming home to this little town...?"''
-->-- '''Toriel'''

Kris' older brother who's away at college, but is coming home to visit soon.
----
* TheAce: His half of his and Kris' shared bedroom is littered with sports trophies and achievement certificates. His old jersey is the only thing left in his clothes drawer. He was also a prominent member of the local church choir, to the point where Father Alvin says you can actually hear the hole where his voice used to be when they sing now.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Since the monsters didn't get stuck Underground this time, Asriel lived a happier life above ground and never went through the trauma that turned his ''Undertale'' counterpart into Flowey (who's a selfish, callous, and sadistic manipulator). He even is attending college too.
* AgeLift: In ''Undertale'', Asriel's true form looks about 8 to 12 years old, only taking on an adult appearance temporarily when fought as the final boss. In ''Deltarune'', he's implied to be at least 18 years old.
* ChickMagnet: If Bratty and Catty are to be believed, he was romantically involved with both of them to some extent in the past, possibly at the same time. He was Catty's date to the prom in high school (which ended in disaster thanks to her antics), and gave Bratty her first kiss in a game of spin the bottle.
* CoolBigBro: He's implied by several people to have been one toward Kris, he apparently liked to include Kris in everything he does as often as he could and he even assisted Kris in some of their pranks. Toriel and Asgore also seem to believe Kris adores Asriel enough that Kris is looking forward to him visiting just as much as their parents are.
* CovertPervert: Implied; Kris finds one of Asriel's library books, on How to Draw Dragons. The cover is described as having a scantily-clad character on it, and Kris comments that their brother probably won't return it. Later, if you visit Asriel's room in Queen's prison (presumably furnished according to [[TheInternetIsForPorn his search history]], like everyone else's), Kris will only look in with their eyes closed, and if you inspect it with Susie ([[CartoonCreature apparently]] a dragon, according to the Mane Axe) back in your party, something in there outrages her and makes her comment that Kris had better hope she never meets him.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Undertale'', he was the main antagonist (as Flowey) and a major player in the backstory whose actions define Asgore's motives. Here, he's just your CoolBigBro and TheGhost (though a number of tropes around Ralsei reference Asriel's former place in the story; see his entry for more details).
* FormerTeenRebel: In a RuleAbidingRebel kind of way. He used to get up to some mischief with his sibling Kris and other kids their age around town, but was well-behaved for the most part.
* TheGhost: So far, he's only been mentioned in conversation and descriptions. It's assumed he's still a goat-like creature as in ''Undertale'', since Toriel mentions that Kris wondered when their horns were going to grow in like Asriel's.
* HasAType: Dragons, and maybe specifically purple ones. Chapter 2 mentions that the copy of "How to Draw Dragons" was rented by ''him''. Later, Cyber World features rooms tailor-made to every Lightner's search history, including his. Backtrack with [[DraconicHumanoid Susie]], and she'll be astounded by what she sees, [[TakeOurWordForIt though we're never given a direct description]].
-->'''Susie:''' HAHAHA!!! Man, you better hope I never meet him...!
* InSeriesNickname: Several characters refer to him as "Azzy", a nickname previously [[AscendedFanon exclusive to fan works]].
* LovedByAll: People have nothing but nice things to say about him, and keep asking Kris when Asriel is coming to visit from his college. The only person who seems to mildly dislike him is Catty's dad, because Asriel doesn't like his wife's cooking.
* MythologyGag:
** His side of the bedroom has a framed photo of a yellow daisy on the wall, nodding back to his ''Undertale'' counterpart's reincarnation as Flowey.
** Checking his computer in Chapter 2 reveals that he had come up with designs for his own video game, including a final boss with giant rainbow wings. In ''Undertale'''s pacifist route, Asriel himself ''is'' the final boss, and his final form has giant rainbow wings.
* NiceGuy: As Chapter 2 reveals, he was so nice that he'd go to confess his "sins" at church, like feeling horrible that he "[[VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld had to jump off the lizard to go higher]]". A description about Toriel's computer wallpaper in Chapter 2, which depicts a younger Asriel and Kris playing a video game, also reveals that he'd always give Kris the pristine controller while he stuck with the knock-off.
* ParentalFavoritism: It's subtly implied that he's the favored child of at least Toriel's between him and Kris. His side of their bedroom is adorned with all sorts of decorations and has a computer, while Kris' only has a wagon and a birdcage, and hidden away under Asriel's bed is a game console with one proper controller and a knock-off one, though he did use the knock-off himself to be nice to his sibling.
* PoorMansPorn: In your house, there's a "How to Draw Dragons" book from the library, which has a scantily dressed purple dragon on the front. The flavor text for it says, "Your brother will never return this book."
* RealMenLoveJesus: Has a collection of religious ska albums underneath his bed and was a faithful church attendee who sang in the choir before leaving for college.
* SignificantAnagram: The Dark World character and main party member Ralsei's name is an anagram of Asriel. The connection between the two, if one even exists, has yet to be determined.
* TheSocialExpert: He's apparently something of a social butterfly in this incarnation, and pretty much the whole town knows and adores him. He's such a social expert that Pizzapants was a close friend of his before he left for college. '''''PIZZAPANTS!'''''

[[caption-width-right:168: ''"Perhaps when Asriel comes home... We could all go to the diner, just like old times..."'']]

Kris and Asriel's father, and the kind owner of a small flower shop. He had a falling-out with Toriel some time in the past. The more things change...
----
* AmbiguouslyBi: For the ''Undertale'' universe, [[https://undertale.com/alarmclock/asgore/ his monologue from the official Alarm Clock app page]] has pretty strong romantic undertones for Rudy. In ''Deltarune'', Rudy speaks highly of Asgore, and in Chapter 2, he reveals Asgore has been giving him flowers that Susie assumes his wife must be giving him. He's still interested in Toriel, however.
* AmicableExes: Surprisingly, in Sans' store, it's possible to trigger a cutscene where he and Toriel bump into each other and both speak to each other with a fair degree of politeness. This suggests that Toriel doesn't necessarily hate Asgore, she simply isn't interested in his attempts to rekindle their previous relationship.
* ButtMonkey: Everything seems to be relatively cheerful on the surface with him, but Toriel still dumped him and throws his bouquet gifts into the trash. Checking the backroom shows that he not only barely has a bed, but is also late on rent, making it seem like he's going to get evicted in the very near future. Nothing seems to go right for Asgore.
* CallBack: His introduction in Chapter 1 mirrors what happened when the player finally met him in ''Undertale''; Asgore, with his back to the protagonist, asks for a moment while he finishes watering flowers, slowly turns around, and expresses surprise at seeing the protagonist. However, whereas the occasion in ''Undertale'' was [[DuelToTheDeath very dark]], here, it's sweet.
* CallToAgriculture: Owns a flower shop and has several flowers in containers in his living space, and as Chapter 2 reveals, he was previously the chief of police.
* CompanionCube: While talking to Sans at his store in Chapter 2, he wonders with Sans about what flowers he should give to win Toriel's affection again. Sans jokingly suggests he consult the plants themselves, and [[SarcasmBlind Asgore assures him]] that the flowers in glass tend to be the first ones he goes to for advice.
* DaChief: A newspaper clipping in the police station establishes that he used to be the local Chief of Police, but was removed after an unspecified incident. This is apparently how an overzealous rookie like Undyne got the post, given the only known alternative would have been ''[[ShrinkingViolet Napstablook.]]''
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Undertale'', he was the ([[AntiVillain nominal]]) main villain and spent the whole game being set up as the final obstacle on your journey. Here, he's just your dad, and he doesn't even get any screentime until Chapter 1's PlayableEpilogue.
* DisneylandDad: A Type I example. He loves Kris and Asriel deeply, and still has (unreciprocated) feelings for Toriel. He doesn't have custody of his children and it seems like he rarely sees them, but when he does, he always tries to do something nice for them, even though he usually lacks the means to. In this case, his "Disneyland trip" is taking Kris and Asriel out for dinner when the latter returns home from college.
* EmptyFridgeEmptyLife: The back of his flower shop is shabby and dreary, and his fridge only has a jar of pickles in it.
* ExiledToTheCouch: {{Implied|Trope}}. When Toriel suggests Susie stay for a sleepover, she remarks that their couch "is used to being used as a bed".
* GentleGiant: He's still as tall and massive he was in the original iteration, and as kindhearted as you would expect.
* TheGlomp: He's ''very happy'' to see Kris, and greets them with this even though they don't like it.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Blond and big-hearted; he gives Kris flowers to take to Toriel despite their breakup.
* InSpiteOfANail: None of the circumstances that led to his estrangement from Toriel in the ''Undertale'' universe appear to be present in ''Deltarune''[[note]]Asriel and the Fallen Child's analog are still alive, Monsters and Humans seemingly live in peace, and there's no hint Asgore has murdered anyone[[/note]], and yet they are still estranged and divorced in this incarnation as well.
* JealousRomanticWitness: Subverted. Chapter 2 gives us a red herring in which Asgore interrupts a flirty conversation between Sans and Toriel and then approaches Sans in a seemingly aggressive way (''"you know what I want, bone man"''). However, it turns out that he just wanted some free pickles. There's some awkwardness, but ultimately no indication that either Asgore or Sans are jealous of each other when it comes to Toriel.
* LonelyBachelorPad: He's separated from Toriel and doesn't have custody of Kris or Asriel, and his house above his shop has little more than a bed, a fridge, a TV, and containers for several flowers.
* MythologyGag: His flower shop's backroom has six colored flowers that correlate to the [=SOULs=] from ''Undertale'', and a particular golden flower as the seventh at the lead (corresponding to the flower that, in ''Undertale'', became Flowey).
* NiceGuy: He's very kind, and as far as we know, he didn't murder any children in this timeline.
* NoodleIncident:
** Toriel and Asgore still ended up divorcing, but it's not known exactly why they did in this continuity.
** Some papers in the police station in Chapter 2 note that he used to be the chief of police and was removed from the position, likely in disgrace, due to some undisclosed incident.
* RealMenWearPink: He owns a flower shop and wears a casual pink, floral-patterned shirt from the end of ''Undertale'''s True Pacifist Route.
* ShoutOut: Rudy got a bouquet of roses in glass from Asgore during his hospital stay in Chapter 1, prompting him to joke that they can't reenact ''Literature/BeautyAndTheBeast'' since [[BeastAndBeauty they're both beasts]]. When he mentions to Sans that he keeps his flowers in glass during Chapter 2, the both of them agree that it's very similar to "[[WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast that movie]]".
* StealthPun: There's a letter in his room that says he's behind on his rent. In other words, he has a [[SignificantAnagram rental due.]]
* StupidGood: He insists on giving away his flowers for free instead of selling them, even though he's seriously behind on his rent.
* TalkingToPlants: He's talked to his flowers in order to figure out how to win back Toriel's heart.
* ThrowTheDogABone: He can be handed the egg received from the Man Behind The Tree, so he can have something to eat other than a jar of pickles at the very least.
* VisitByDivorcedDad: Inverted. Kris can visit ''him'' near the end of Chapter 1.
* WellDoneDadGuy: Befitting his downtrodden non-custodial divorcee status, he tries extra hard to earn his kids' and his ex-wife's respect, but is implied to often come up lacking. His dialog with Kris suggests that Kris is normally embarrassed by him.

[[folder:Noelle]]
!!Noelle Holiday
[[quoteright:183:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tvtropes_noelle.png]]
[[caption-width-right:183:''"Hey, Kris! What's up? Didja lose your pencil again?"'']]
->''"It's a dream, right? I'd grow big angel wings, and fly as far as I can, gazing back at it all... The skyline shining like holiday lights."''
The timid youngest daughter of Rudolph Holiday, and the second smartest student in class. While a bit of a doormat, Noelle is unfailingly nice and polite to everyone. Originally just a minor NPC in Hometown, Noelle becomes the GuestStarPartyMember and {{deuteragonist}} of Chapter 2, where she's kidnapped by Queen so she can become Queen's "Willing Peon" in her quest to TakeOverTheWorld and create more Dark Fountains. During the "Weird Route", Noelle's role becomes even more important than on the normal route, [[CorruptTheCutie for better or worse]].

While in the Dark World, [[AnIcePerson Noelle uses ice magic]]. She, like Ralsei, can pacify enemies and heal party members with her Sleep Mist and Heal Prayer spells respectively. However, she also carries a spell called [=IceShock=] which she can use to defeat enemies in a more... [[KillItWithIce painful]] way. During the Weird Route, she learns a particularly powerful spell called [[OneHitKill SnowGrave]], although it can be used only once.
----
* AbsurdPhobia:
** In one of Noelle's [[https://deltarune.com/icepalace_glaceir/ blog posts]], she expresses a fear of getting eletrocuted by wires even when plugging a controller to her game console and says that electrical sockets give her scopophobia. Those fears manifest in Cyber World as the Werewires and the strange snake-like enemies on the Basement's walls that slowly glare at the screen if Kris idles near them.
** Overlapping with IronicFear, her father claims that she's afraid of SANTA CLAUS, of all things. He might just be exaggerating though.
* AcademicAthlete: She's on the Cross Country Team with Jockington, and is the real brains of the class.
* ActuallyPrettyFunny: She seems to appreciate Kris's pranks, even when they're targeting her. Though she yells at them, her sprites usually have a smile while doing so.
* AffectionateNickname: Upon reaching the first mouse puzzle, if Kris tries to leave to the north after giving Noelle her first mouse-related scare, she will refer to Kris as Krismas, a nickname she likely learned from her father.
-->'''Noelle:''' Oh, merry Krismaaaas[=--=]! That's where we came from!
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Bad ''[[GenderInvertedTrope girls]]'', in this case, but her crush on Susie stems at least partially from how wild and "dangerous" she is. Most people are terrified of Susie because of her intentionally antisocial demeanor and threatening behavior, but Noelle is drawn to her because of it. Ironically, Noelle is the one person Susie never bullied.
* AllJustADream: Noelle is convinced that her adventure in Chapter 2 is just a dream. In the Weird Route, you ''can'' tell her ThatWasNotADream, just to rub salt in the wound.
* TheAllSolvingHammer: In the Weird route, Noelle gets very used to using [=IceShock=] on everything she faces without giving it any thought, to the point of almost freezing Berdly on sight without even recognizing him. Even once Noelle returns to the Light World, she keeps trying to use [=IceShock=] in a video game, even against an ice-element enemy.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: She is the second smartest student in school while Berdly takes first place, but as he'll later admit, it's because she's the one helping him study and lets him take much of the credit for his success. He came close to second in the school spelling bee when they were younger, and only won because Noelle got cold hooves from being made to spell "[[TraumaButton December]]".
* AmbiguouslyRelated: To the Shadow Crystal holders.
** If you try to equip the Devilsknife (as in, Jevil [[{{Objectshifting}} in a different form]]) to Noelle, she says it smiled at her. That said, this is [[VaguenessIsComing Je]][[NoticingTheFourthWall vil]] we're talking about, so whatever he knows about Noelle he probably gained from the "strange someone" that drove him mad. Additionally, if you equip the Jevilstail to Noelle, she says "... (I like it...)", furthering the connection between the two.
** However, with Spamton, it's been made obvious there is some sort of connection between them. Spamton calls her an "angel" (whenever it isn't "Hochi Mama", that is) on the Weird Route, Noelle calls Spamton's shop "nostalgic", and says that the Dealmaker glasses that you gain after the Spamton NEO fight are familar. She also indirectly connects Asgore and Spamton, by saying Spamton's Frayed Bowtie reminds her of Asgore.
*** A [=QnA=] from the Spamton Sweepstakes event reveals that Noelle was the only one to respond to his emails back when he was a sentient email client way before the computer room Dark Fountain was created, so he gave her a "pipis" as a way of saying thanks.
* ArtEvolution: In the original version of the game, Noelle's dialogue portraits had long hair that was cut off by the bottom of the frame. The Chapter 2 update made her hair shorter to match her overworld sprite more closely, although she still reverts to her old hair during certain expressions. Also, the early versions of the game gave Noelle lipsyncing like the characters from ''Undertale'', which was strangely lost in Chapter 2.
* AscendedExtra: Went from a minor character in Chapter 1 to the {{deuteragonist}} of Chapter 2.
* BarefootCartoonAnimal: She's a deer girl who's fully-dressed but bare-hoofed. It isn't completely clear that those are hooves and not shoes just from looking at her sprites, save for one: when she's violently shaking Berdly after he confesses his affections for Susie, her hooves gain a small cleft. [[https://twitter.com/tobyfox/status/1474747245597982721 Toby Fox's sketches of Noelle]] further reaffirm the idea, explicitly depicting her with cloven-hooved feet (without being a joke doodle like some of the other sketches featured). Lastly, if you decline the offer of a "free sample" from the Cyber Shoes II store, she'll make a comment that explicitly states it:
--> '''Noelle:''' Umm, I don't really do... shoes.\
(At least not unless they're custom-made...)
* BehindEveryGreatMan: As far as the town knows, Berdly is a genius and Noelle is AlwaysSecondBest. In reality, Noelle is much more intelligent, but lacks the confidence to publicly display it, and Berdly's academic success comes from studying ''with her''.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Noelle is sweet, helpful, and incredibly timid, but she can also become a little unhinged if pushed too far, as shown when she throttles Berdly after [[{{Yandere}} learning he's developed a crush on Susie]]. If corrupted in Chapter 2's darker 'Weird Route', she becomes your strongest party member by far, enough to finish off [[StoneWall Spamton NEO]] after he raises his defense to ridiculous levels, in one hit.
* BigDamnHeroes: A twisted version of this trope, and of the one seen on Undertale's Neutral Ending. On Chapter 2's Weird route, she's the one who comes to Kris's aid when called, destroying Spamton NEO with a single [=IceShock=]. Notably, Kris first shouts for Susie and Ralsei, [[ArcWords but nobody comes]]. Noelle, however, has turned into such an obedient girl that she rushes in from nowhere once Kris, or rather "[[AddressingThePlayer You]]", simply whispers her name.
* BigWhat: When Berdly says that he has a crush on Susie, Noelle -- [[CrushBlush who couldn't be more obvious about her own crush on Susie if she tried]] -- starts shaking Berdly while saying "WHAT?" repeatedly, all with her dialogue portrait having [[WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises intense wide eyes with pinprick pupils]] and a [[SlasherSmile huge open smile]].
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Maybe on the Weird Route. The only thing Kris tells Noelle to do in the Snowgrave route is to "Proceed" and she blindly follows their orders, implying that Kris (or the player) may be able to use more than their words to command their allies.
* BreakTheCutie: The Weird Route is dedicated to this; {{Gaslighting}} and intimidating Noelle into freezing enemies to death until she becomes ConditionedToAcceptHorror. This leads to the murder of Berdly, an action that [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone sickens her so much]] that she [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere weakly stumbles away]].
* CastFromHitPoints: Her [=SnowGrave=] spell requires her to wear the Ring of Thorns, which drains her health, to even be able to afford enough Tension Points to cast it -- and even then, it takes ''100% of your Tension!'' Given that it can OneHitKill anything, it's worth it... [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential if that's what you want to do, anyway]].
* CharacterDevelopment: If you make the right choices on the Pacifist Route, Noelle gains the courage to face her fears, from the little ones like mice to the big ones like saying no to people, ultimately refusing to become Queen's {{Mook}}.
* ChekhovsGunman: There were hints laying around for her future importance before Chapter 2 released.
** Along with her father, Noelle's appearance was first teased [[http://undertale.tumblr.com/post/165367197345/undertale-2nd-anniversary-and-alarm-clock in a preview for]] ''Undertale'''s Alarm Clock App, and received more mentions in [[https://undertale.com/alarmclock/asgore/ Asgore's released dialogue]] from the Alarm Clock app (revealing she is the youngest daughter of her father). She receives the most attention of all supporting classmates in Chapter 1, setting possible plot hooks for later events. Also, if you input her name as the creator in the opening sequence, the narrator gives the ominous "you will meet somebody very wonderful" remark Kris's and Susie's names get. She even appeared in [[https://twitter.com/tobyfox/status/1063270097110949888 early concept art]] alongside the main party, further hinting at her importance.
** While Toby Fox was dropping ''Deltarune'' development updates during ''Undertale's'' four-year anniversary, he previewed [[https://twitter.com/tobyfox/status/1173215290349559808 a song associated with Noelle]] and [[https://twitter.com/tobyfox/status/1173278892167221250 portrait art of her alongside Susie and Ralsei]] -- the only two other party members revealed so far-- further reinforcing her Gunman status.
* ChildhoodFriend: She happens to be one of the very few, if not the ''only'', friend to Kris while growing up besides their own brother in Asriel. She holds this friendship very dearly, enough to openly admit almost all of her concerns and problems to Kris and hoping they help her talk to Susie all the while. There's the occasional moment that makes her wonder if there's something more there, but she dismisses it to focus on Susie.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She [[AmusingInjuries comically throttles]] Berdly after he confesses to having a crush on Susie.
* CombatMedic: She can cast Heal Prayer and [=IceShock=]; this upgrades into a magic version of DeadlyDoctor on the Weird Route when she picks up [=SnowGrave=] as well.
* CombatSadomasochist: The ring that lets Noelle cast the deadly [=SnowGrave=] also drains her health, with her description of her character class changing to state she now derives power from pain. She becomes used to killing and obeying Kris while looking [[DissonantSerenity rather calm and pleased about it]]. It doesn't help that the ring -- which has a figure of somebody inside a snowglobe -- and her ice spells are implied to be related to her trauma over the word "December".
* ConfusedQuestionMark: In Chapter 2, her ACT-ready animation[[note]]which can't be seen normally because she's always the last member of the party[[/note]] shows her mimicking Kris's thinking pose with a confused expression and question marks over her head.
* TheCorruptible: In a {{Deconstruction}} of timid, shy types in fiction, who usually have [[SilkHidingSteel hidden strength]], Noelle shows what happens when one ''doesn't.'' Due to her timid nature, Noelle doesn't have very much in the way of willpower or a solid moral center, and is extremely susceptible to suggestion and manipulation. Playing on the Weird Route involves exploiting her suggestible nature by gaslighting and intimidating her; because she doesn't have the strength of personality to say no, this leads to her getting bullied into using her ice magic to kill the enemies (and eventually ''Berdly'') opposing her and Kris, essentially turning her from a nice, innocent girl into an emotionally distant spree killer.
* CorruptTheCutie: [[VideoGameCrueltyPotential If you so wish]], you can turn her into a stone-cold killer until she learns the [=SnowGrave=] spell, which is [[OneHitKill lethal]] and requires a special ring to even be able to cast. Using this on Berdly freezes him solid, killing him in the Dark and Light Worlds, after which Noelle walks off in a daze, only returning when the player summons her to finish off Spamton NEO.
* CovertPervert:
** There are several hints Noelle harbors some masochistic tendencies and that's part of why she finds [[TheBully Susie]] attractive. At the epilogue of Chapter 1 if you tell her that Susie is terrible after she asks Kris what she's like, Noelle suggests asking Alphys if they could switch partners so that Kris wouldn't [[ThatCameOutWrong be the one who gets slammed into the locker (She immediately chides herself for her wording)]], and in Chapter 2 if you select "Susie wouldn't" in a conversation where she wonders how Susie would respond if she asked her to join for a Ferris wheel ride, she says this.
--->'''Noelle:''' Y-you're right! Even if I asked her, she'd...Probably just laugh at me. ''*starts smiling and blushing*'' And, gosh, push me to the ground, and...L-laugh at me some more, and then...''*realizes she's rambling out loud, gets embarrassed and blushes more*'' (...What were we talking about again?)
** If you make her click on the Poppup enemies, the FlavorText will either say that she either mis-clicked on a link to buy "How To Draw Dragons" ([[BrickJoke Y'know, the same book Asriel will never return due to the hot dragon girl on the cover?]]) or clicked on a link for "Hot Female Santas In Your Area!", with the narration conspicuously omitting the word "accidentally" here. Both times, she will smile cheekily and say this.
--->'''Noelle:''' Wh-What!? What did I do wrong??
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Noelle can give those in the Weird Route by freezing people in blocks of ice. Berdly becomes a victim of this.
* CrushBlush: When she and Susie are both in the party together in Chapter 2, Noelle looks at the ground while blushing as she follows everyone.
* CuteClumsyGirl: In the Dark World while she's a GuestStarPartyMember, she takes a few actions that cause her to trip and fall. However, they serve to show what a NiceGirl she is.
** While using the "[=TakeCareX=]" action on Virovirokun, she puts on a nurse's outfit and carries a tray of tea, but trips and faceplants onto the ground, complete with a "splat" sound effect, spilling the drink all over the place. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]], however, in a Weird playthrough, where if the player chooses to "[=TakeCareX=]", she does not trip.
** After putting on the PaperThinDisguise of a cardboard box with a crudely drawn robot face, Noelle somehow manages to fool Queen. Noelle tries to keep going with the box still on her head, but because the box doesn't have any eyeholes, she trips over the foot of Berdly's gaudy statue. Noelle then tucks the box away, only putting it on when she has to.
* TheCutie: Noelle is a ShrinkingViolet and an ExtremeDoormat. But she's also friendly, sweet, and absolutely adorable. In the neutral route of Chapter 2, she keeps encouraging Kris, talking about what a good job they're doing, and is happy to be in their company.
* DaddysGirl: Her dialogue suggests that she's much more comfortable around her father than her mother.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: [=SnowGrave=]. Accessible only when Noelle has become comfortable with killing others, and requires a ring that brings the user constant pain. The description for [=SnowGrave=] simply reads [[OneHitKill "Fatal"]].
* TheDarkSideWillMakeYouForget: In the Weird route, when coming across Berdly, she'll just coldly say "Kris, it looks like another enemy. Shall I freeze them?" It takes Berdly calling out to Noelle before she even recognizes him.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Noelle is the classic timid healer girl whose main story beat is that she is someone's LoveInterest, and she needs the player character to help her. Really, the only unusual thing is that she's ''not'' in love with the player character, instead loving Susie. If the player doesn't commit to the Weird Route, she stays that way. But if they go on the Weird Route, her timidity and need to rely on someone else turns her into a murderer.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Being an herbivore, she doesn't like meat. Giving her a Darkburger will only heal her for 20 HP, even though it heals everyone else for 70 HP.
-->'''Noelle''': I-is this real meat...?
* TheDragon:
** Subverted for Queen: she tries to create her perfect world by making Noelle her "willing peon", but it doesn't come as expected because of the heroes’ intervention.
** Played straight for Kris (or rather the SOUL) in the Weird Route: while they are the one looking for power, Noelle is the one doing all the dirty work for them, from solving puzzles to freezing enemies to death.
* DumbBlonde: {{Inverted|Trope}}. This blonde-haired deer's among the top of the class and even helps Berdly with his homework.
* EekAMouse: She hates mice, to the point that mice in a mouse puzzle scare her. She'll even tease Kris for "deliberately" scaring her if they fail the first mouse puzzle three times, but she does get over it throughout Chapter 2.
* EnragedByIdiocy: After being rescued from Queen's Palace, Berdly arrives to apologize--not for being a dick to her, but for acting like he had a crush on her because he thought ''[[EntertaininglyWrong she]]'' [[EntertaininglyWrong was attracted to]] ''[[EntertaininglyWrong him]]''. Then he reveals that [[{{Irony}} he has a crush on Susie]]. Cue Noelle ''throttling'' him out of frustration.
* ElementalPersonalities: Being an anthropomorphic reindeer, she's naturally associated with ice and snow, using spells related to such in the Dark World. While generally a sweet and gentle figure who excels in school, the Weird Route in Chapter 2 revolves around the player forcing her into becoming an unfeeling living weapon by psychologically abusing her and having her freeze every enemy in Cyber City, which leaves her deeply traumatized when she snaps out of it.
* ExtremeDoormat: Her FatalFlaw. Noelle folds with no resistance whenever anyone contradicts her in any way, at least [[CharacterDevelopment until the climax of Chapter 2]]. On the stats screen, her "Boldness" is listed at negative sixteen. Noelle straight up tells the party that the reason she joined up with Queen, despite knowing she was bad news, was that she literally couldn't bring herself to say "no". She herself mentions that Kris and her dad are the only people she’s ever been able to say "no" to. This is PlayedForDrama in the Weird Route, where the player is able to bend Noelle to their will through Kris because of her naturally submissive personality, grooming her into a merciless killer who will do everything Kris says.
* EvilIsDeathlyCold: While not normally an example, it's possible for the player to corrupt her into a literally and metaphorically ice cold killer over the course of the [=SnowGrave=] route.
* FatalFlaw: '''Meekness.''' Noelle is a NiceGirl, but to a fault. She's so passive and such an ExtremeDoormat that she can't say "no" to anyone, even when she knows the idea or the person behind it is bad news. Her CharacterDevelopment in Chapter 2, regardless of what the player does, [[GrewASpine is about overcoming this]].
** In the normal route, Berdly confesses that Noelle is the smart one, and he's leeching off of her intelligence. Also, Noelle can't bring herself to say "no" to becoming Queen's pawn, even though Queen has made it clear that her intention is to TakeOverTheWorld. With the help of Kris and Susie, Noelle learns to finally stand up for herself and reject Queen's goals outright.
** In the [=SnowGrave=] route, she's groomed by the player into becoming a stone-cold killer, to the point that she's able to OneHitKill almost anything she comes across, GainingTheWillToKill and going on a rampage through Queen's forces. The whole time this is happening, the player is taking advantage of Noelle's weakness and inability to resist what someone else wants to [[CorruptTheCutie corrupt her]] with emotional abuse and {{gaslighting}}. Only after she uses the [=SnowGrave=] spell to kill Berdly does Noelle finally snap out of it, and even that doesn't last, immediately freezing Spamton NEO when the player whispers her name.
* {{Foil}}: To both her crush Susie and to Kris, especially on the Weird Route.
** Susie starts out as a ruthless bully whose favorite tactic is to threaten to bite somebody's face off, but for all of her savage bravado, she's shown to be unable to kill someone, even if she thinks they betrayed her or abused her best friend, and starts becoming nicer during the first chapter. Noelle, on the other hand, starts out as sweet and inoffensive, but even on the neutral route, she shows some hidden darkness when she throttles Berdly after he announces his romantic interest in Susie, and she becomes far worse on the Weird Route, getting worn down by the player through emotional abuse until she becomes a mass murderer.
** Like Kris, she's a reserved teenager who idolizes her older sibling and whose fathers don't live at home during the events of the game. But while Kris has a caring mother, a distant father still in good (physical) health, and is separated from their brother Asriel only because he's at college, Noelle's mother is implied to be strict with and[=/=]or too busy to deal with her, her father is stuck in the hospital due to a possibly fatal disease, and her sister is implied to be missing or even dead. Also, while the player already uses them as a puppet, Kris is forced to make Noelle into their own puppet to corrupt the game in the Weird Route.
* FurryReminder: Despite being an anthropomorphic reindeer-like monster with little to no connection with her animal counterpart, as with most other anthro monsters in ''Undertale'' and ''Deltarune'', Susie suggests that Noelle may have ticks if Kris tries to sleep in her bed in Queen's palace, suggesting that anthropomorphic reindeer monsters have tick problems. She is also freaked out at the Darkburger being made of real meat, healing little HP when used on her, while she's excited to eat the unused Giga Salad, describing it as "something to graze on" and being fully healed by it. Reindeer are herbivores.
* GainingTheWillToKill: On the Weird route, using [=IceShock=] to freeze every enemy she comes across and [[CorruptTheCutie corrupting her mind into obeying Kris]] causes her to unleash the [=SnowGrave=] spell, which is explicitly stated to be "fatal", on Berdly.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: Since she's a reindeer monster and therefore a herbivore, Noelle gets more health from eating vegetable-based items, but less health from eating meat-based items. The Darkburger heals her for only 20 HP (but heals everyone else for 70 HP), and the Giga Salad heals her for 90 HP (but heals everyone else for a measly 4 HP).
* GamerChick: When visiting her father in hospital, they spend time discussing video games. In Chapter 2, she also says that the battle reminds her of ''Dragon Blazers'', an in-universe series of RPG video games.
** The Spamton Sweepstakes establish she runs a "game glitches, secrets and rumors" blog as "holidaygirl1225". She writes about strange creepypasta-like scenarios she encountered as a child in ''Cat Petterz 2'' (a named Egg gifted from the Man Behind the Tree and a Pipis gifted from Spamton) and in ''Dragon Blazers'' (a hidden door in a maze area that wouldn't open). It is implied by her posts that the events of ''Dragon Blazers'' reflect those of ''Deltarune'' itself.
* GirlishPigtails: Berdly's flashback in Chapter Two indicates that she had this hair style when she was a child.
* GlassCannon: Her Attack, HP, and Defense are all the worst among the playable characters, but her [=IceShock=] power is incredibly strong (she has the highest Magic stats in the game). She can also get the [=SnowGrave=] spell, which is a OneHitKill attack.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When she casts [[OneHitKill SnowGrave]] on Berdly on the Weird route, Noelle's eyes glow white.
* GoryDiscretionShot: The screen blacks out when she attacks an Addison and Spamton NEO in the Weird Route, implying whatever happens isn't pretty.
* GrewASpine: Regardless of what you do in Chapter 2, Noelle undergoes CharacterDevelopment to become more assertive and stop being such an ExtremeDoormat to everyone.
** In the ending of the neutral route, Noelle finally stands up to Queen and refuses to create a Dark Fountain under the latter's command, even though Queen just wants to make a world that makes her happy.
** In the Weird route, it's a DownplayedTrope. She's corrupted and groomed by Kris into becoming a stone-cold killer, to the point that she's able to OneHitKill almost anything she comes across, GainingTheWillToKill and going on a rampage through Queen's forces. Both her Coldness and Boldness stats increase and she walks out of the Dark World looking more confident... but this also comes with her becoming submissive to Kris while fighting and deathly afraid of them when she realizes what she experienced was real.
* GuestStarPartyMember: She is playable during most of the Cyber City segment before Susie and Ralsei reunite with Kris.
* HerbivoresAreFriendly: Most of the time, she's a deer-like Lightner, and she's a friendly NiceGirl with a shy personality. However, on the Weird route, you can [[CorruptTheCutie corrupt her into nothing more than a mere killing machine, freezing every single enemy in her path.]]
* HiddenDepths: Noelle's father is currently in the hospital because of some unknown illness. She visits him often. Also, despite being anxiety riddled and pretty nerdy, according to a flier in the school, she runs cross country track along with Jockington.
* HighSpeedBattle: Queen sends the heroes on a roller coaster, first pitting them against Noelle's own cart. [[DoubleSubversion When Noelle doesn't put up a fight, she's replaced with Berdly instead]].
* HowDoIShotWeb: She has to have the mechanics of battle explained to her mid-fight. Not just by Kris, but by the Virovirokun that she's fighting.
* AnIcePerson: Befitting her Christmas motif, her basic attack spell is [=IceShock=], which freezes the target in a thin layer of ice. On a Weird Route playthrough, she gains access to a second ice spell: [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Snow]][[OneHitKill Grave]].
* InTheDreamingStageOfGrief: After the Weird Route, Noelle will still believe that her adventure was just a dream, but she'll still feel uncomfortable around Kris and worry about Berdly who didn't wake up.
* TheIngenue: Natch. A sweet, innocent teenage girl who's kind to everyone.
* IronicFear:
** For an entire Christmas-themed monster family, Rudy lists off "Santa Claus" as one of the many things Noelle's frightened of. Even odder is that she's still attracted to one of Poppup's ads about "[[CovertPervert Hot Female Santas In Your Area]]".
** Similarly, she has [[TraumaButton a stigma to the word "December"]], thanks to its association with her sister and related trauma involving ''something'' that happened regarding her.
* ItGetsEasier: Once the Weird route gets underway, her formally cowardly 'win' pose now becomes her surrounding herself in an ice barrier, anticipating the next battle, to the point she initially shrugs off Berdly at first as just 'another enemy'. Thankfully, she snaps out of it, but not for long enough to keep her from blindly rushing in to dispatch Spamton NEO at the player's command.
* JustFollowingOrders: Should the player force Noelle into evil, she starts rationalizing her actions by enjoying how Kris has been helping her become strong, and becomes subservient to them. When the two of them come across Berdly, she notes him as just another enemy at first, willing to kill on Kris's orders once again. While she has to be talked into it, she does kill Berdly with [=SnowGrave=], once again obeying Kris. Back in the Light World, however, she is disturbed by what happened and begins to realize the one making her do all of those things wasn't actually Kris.
* JustFriends: On the neutral route, talking to one of the Addisons has him ask if Kris and Noelle are romantically involved. Should Kris say "We're friends", Noelle will happily agree, and note that it's nice just hearing them say so. There's a hint that there's ''something'' there in Noelle's heart for Kris, but suggesting that they're "something else" catches Noelle off-guard. Either way, she'll move past it to focus her romantic attractions just on Susie.
* JustJokingJustification: A variation; abandoning the Weird route either at the second annoying mouse puzzle or the second Berdly fight will result in her shrugging off Kris' behaviour as merely a mean prank or joke at her expense, before the game continues as normal.
* KickTheMoralityPet:
** Going through the Weird Route requires you to manipulate and corrupt Noelle through her trust in her childhood friend, Kris, until she essentially becomes your puppet by proxy. Kris themself is disturbed by what you're doing, and according to Spamton NEO, one reason for why "Kris" ([[DemonicPossession actually the player]]) would even attempt this is to get a chance for "freedom" of their own.
** Even outside the Weird Route, you can make Kris step off the switch controlling the electrical gate ''just before'' Noelle finishes walking over. Despite nearly getting electrocuted, she takes it in stride and plays along, but Kris is said to look rather hurt over doing it.
* KillItWithIce: Unlike the Delta Warriors, who can only manage a NonLethalKO at worst, Noelle's [=IceShock=] spell can actually kill Darkners. This eventually leads to unlocking an even stronger, ''fatal'' spell: [=SnowGrave=].
* {{Leitmotif}}: Currently, she has two songs mainly associated with her: "Girl Next Door", a cheerful piano tune that plays in her first appearance in Chapter 2, and "Lost Girl", a more tranquil theme that's used when she and Susie are having a moment together. "Ferris Wheel" combines the two to form the theme's complete form, as suggested by an unused variant of the theme labelled "Noelle.ogg" in the game files.
* LightIsGood: In the Dark World, she wears a white robe, and is generally a nice and friendly individual... [[LightIsNotGood unless you go onto the]] [[CorruptTheCutie Weird route, where you actively encourage her to murder everyone in her path.]] Bonus points for actually being a Lightner to begin with.
* LimitBreak: On the Weird route, she gains a DangerousForbiddenTechnique called [=SnowGrave=] that {{One Hit Kill}}s anything it hits. Unlike every other action in the game, using this move requires a whopping ''200% TP'', necessitating the use of the [=ThornRing=] to cut it down to the actually accessible but still hugely expensive 100%.
* LipstickLesbian: She dresses and acts traditionally feminine, and has an obvious interest in Susie. If you have her click on Poppup's pop-up ads in a battle, she'll pick either the one that says "Hot Female Santas in your Area!" or the one selling ''[[PoorMansPorn How to Draw Dragons]]''.
* LogicalLatecomer: When she joins Kris as a GuestStarPartyMember in Cyber City and has her first battle against a Virovirokun, she's completely confused by what's happening and has no idea what to do. Kris and the Virovirokun will temporarily call a truce to explain to her the mechanisms of an encounter[[note]]It's possible to miss this interaction if you don't have Noelle ACT[[/note]]. She's still visibly perplexed when she's suddenly in a nurse's outfit and holding a tray of tea, immediately tripping and falling on her face.
-->'''Noelle:''' I get it! It's kind of like ''Dragon Blazers''! And if we're nice to you, we can win through mercy?\
'''Virovirokun:''' Yeah\
'''Noelle:''' And the way I have to do that is... Dressing up in a weird costume.\
'''Virovirokun:''' Yeah
* LonelyRichKid: Not immediately obvious, but it's implied that she's one, given her home has an iron gate in front of it and her mother is the mayor of Hometown. And as for the lonely part, prior to the beginning of the story, her only real friend is Berdly, and it's implied they spend most of their time together on schoolwork. Kris and Asriel were {{Childhood Friend}}s of hers, but Kris is an emotionally distant CreepyChild and Asriel is off at college. There's also the situation with Noelle's sister Dess, but it's not clear where Dess even is.
* LovableCoward: She's a very nice person who is liked by several people, but is scared of a lot of things, to the point she freezes. In Chapter 2, she's shown to be scared of mice, to the point that using mice in a mice puzzle causes Noelle to have a small FreakOut. It's also shown in a flashback of Berdly's that she tensed up at spelling the word "December" in a spelling bee, although the explanation as to why she froze up goes unsaid.
--> '''Rudolph:''' I just wish she wasn't so... defenseless. Scary movies, bugs, [[IronicFear Santa Claus]]... everything scares her. And when it happens, she freezes like a deer in headlights.
* MeaningfulAppearance: "Noelle Holiday" is a reindeer, animals typically associated with SantaClaus. Her outfit in the Light World is a green and red sweater, [[HomemadeSweaterFromHell an outfit typically associated with Christmas gifts]]. In Chapter 2, she has some association with the month of December, and her attack spells when she's playable [[AnIcePerson all involve using ice]], as Christmas is a winter holiday in the Northern Hemisphere. When the DJ trio in Cyber World offer to play her some music, they play a remixed version of "[[ChristmasSongs Jingle Bells]]". However, this motif extends to having a TraumaButton around the word "December", whether it be the month itself or its similarity to her sister's name, for reasons that have not yet been explained.
* MeaningfulName: As part of her character's very strong Christmas motif, Noelle comes from ''Noël'', which is French for "Christmas"[[note]]In fact, the masculine Noël and the feminine Noelle are actual first names in French-speaking countries, although they are rarely given precisely because they are derived from the French word for Christmas[[/note]]. To compound it, her last name is "Holiday". Meanwhile, her father's name is Rudolph, after one of the nine reindeer that is said to pull Santa's magic sleigh.
* MoralityPet: To four characters, showing her NiceGirl status.
** To [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Susie]] for [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe treating her kindly]]. She and Toriel are pretty much the only people Susie liked before her CharacterDevelopment, with her never bullying Noelle beforehand. Susie's really angry at Queen throughout Chapter 2 thanks to her capturing Noelle and planning to turn her into a minion of hers.
** To [[CreepyChild Kris]] for being their close ChildhoodFriend. She's so nice that TheTrickster Kris is visibly upset when risking Noelle's life in a force field puzzle. The [[EarnYourBadEnding Weird Route]] where the player [[CorruptTheCutie corrupts Noelle]] results in Kris expressing subtle horror at what you're making them do to her.
** She's also one for [[AcademicAlphaBitch Berdly]]. One of the reasons he [[TheDragon serves Queen loyally during Chapter 2]] is because Queen implied that she was going to give Noelle a robot face otherwise, and when she threatens Noelle, he [[HeelFaceTurn sides with the heroes]]. He's also horrified by the way Kris has been treating her in the Weird Route.
** To [[AntiVillain Queen]]. She really does care about Noelle, and when Noelle says that she doesn't want to be part of her plans, she backs down and lets Noelle and her friends go.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: If you pursue the Weird route that involves corrupting her into a killer in Chapter 2, Noelle fortunately regains most of her senses, though she has a quiet FreakOut over what happened in her "nightmare". The player can further twist the knife by [[ThatWasNotADream telling her it wasn't a dream]], which causes Noelle to run home.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: [=SnowGrave=] is [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin exactly what you'd expect it to mean,]] [[CruelAndUnusualDeath as Berdly finds out the hard way.]]
* NiceGirl: By far the nicest of Kris's classmates. She even tries to convince Alphys to let Kris group up with her and Berdly. ''Try'' being the keyword. When she's a GuestStarPartyMember in Chapter 2, any non-Weird run has Noelle compliment Kris and encourage them. However, Deltarune examines a very rare downside to this trope: Noelle is ''so'' nice that she's an ExtremeDoormat, to the point that she can't even bring herself to say "no" to the likes of Queen... or ''the player'', who can turn Noelle into a murderer on the Weird Route just by asking. Noelle's nice nature is much more related to her lack of a spine than anything else, and it can cause her to kill.
* NightmareFetishist: She expresses a particular liking for "scary things", especially when she associates them with being comforted, such as watching horror movies late at night with her sister, exploring the woods behind the graveyard when she was young, and her adventure in the Dark World. When you have her click on a Poppup, the FlavorText has a chance of saying that she "clicked on a link for creepy game glitch compilations". When Spamton gave her a Pipis in "Cat Petterz 2," she was more amused by the corruptions that the egg brought than worried about the effects of it, although she did express mild contempt when she mentions the save file was rendered completely unusable. Susie is generally regarded as weird, creepy, and terrifying, but Noelle seems to like that about her. For that matter, so is Kris, her childhood friend; Catti mentions that the two even studied occultism together in the past.
* NumerologicalMotif: A rather subtle example, but by the time you fight Berdly on the Weird Route, the Thorn Ring will reduce her health to 55. What's the significance of this number? When converted into Roman numerals, 55 becomes ''LV''. As in, "[[CallBack LOVE]]", AKA "[[ItGetsEasier Level Of ViolencE]]".
* OneHitKill: The [=SnowGrave=] spell, a Weird route-exclusive LimitBreak that has Noelle whip up a huge blizzard to freeze the enemy solid. It's first learned in the second battle against Berdly.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: Once the Weird route truly gets underway, she shows some alarming differences in and outside of battle. She no longer cowers when the battle starts, she no longer trips up when she uses [=TakeCareX=], nor cowers when defending, instead forming a wall of ice. Likewise, instead of sighing in relief once the battle ends, she instead prays and forms a sphere of ice around her. Meanwhile, back in the Light World, she's more persistent and controlling when playing ''Dragon Blazers'' with her dad, which he notices rather quickly.
* OutOfCharacterAlert: She's able to recognize that Kris isn't acting like their usual self in Chapter 1 from their sudden sociability. As the Weird Route of Chapter 2 progresses, she comes to sense more and more that's off about her former friend, acknowledging how the commands come from a voice that doesn't belong to them, yet is unable to conclude just ''what'' is going on due to the SOUL's possession and manipulation being [[OutsideContextProblem something outside of her perception and grasp]].
* PaperThinDisguise: To hide herself from Queen, she starts wearing a cardboard box (or bag) with a crudely drawn robot face on it (the same one Queen shows off in her first appearance, itself based on WebSite/{{Twitch}}'s :) emote). It fools Queen completely (since she uses facial-recognition software to identify people), who even comments on what a cool face she has.
* PowerDyesYourHair: [[DownplayedTrope Though not as noticeable as with Kris]], while in the Dark World her hair changes from its normal honey-blonde color to a brighter platinum-blonde (one might say [[StealthPun frosted]]) shade.
* PromotedToPlayable: She was an NPC in Chapter 1, but becomes a true playable GuestStarPartyMember in Chapter 2 who temporarily joins Kris.
* RageBreakingPoint: Berdly's stupidity [[EnragedByIdiocy is getting on Noelle's nerves]] when he insists that Noelle "obviously" has a crush on him and that he has to let her down easy. But when he reveals that he now has a crush on Susie, Noelle ''snaps'' and lets Berdly have it by choking him while saying "WHAT?" repeatedly.
* RealityIsUnrealistic: Noelle is sometimes thought to be a case of AnimalGenderBender due to having antlers. However, both male and female reindeer have antlers (differing only in when they ''shed'' their antlers), as opposed to most species of deer where only the males have them.
* RedOniBlueOni: Noelle is the shy and reserved Blue oni to Berdly's arrogant Red oni.
* TheRedMage: She has spells to heal, to pacify tired enemies, and to attack with ice.
* RememberTheNewGuy: She and Dess are revealed to have had counterparts in the ''Undertale'' universe by the [[https://undertale.com/alarmclock/asgore/ Alarm Clock App]] and Sans's Dog Shrine dialogue in the Xbox One version, even living in Snowdin during the events of the game, but it's only her alternate-universe counterpart in ''Deltarune'' that actually makes a physical appearance.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: PlayedForDrama. In the Weird Route, after you [[ForcedIntoEvil make her kill Berdly]], she will be so sickened with her actions that she states a desire to go home, after which she will slowly stumble away and leave your party.
* SelfHarm: Implied by the Ring of Thorns draining her health. Someone in Sans' store also notes her standing in front of an open freezer door and seizing up, and with her known issues involving December, it could have been an effort to force herself to remember past trauma.
* ShrinkingViolet: Lampshaded by her father Rudolph. Noelle often lacks the will-power to assert herself and descends into incomprehensible mumbling when she feels uncertain. The fact that Alphys of all people has to tell her to speak up at one point is pretty telling. During her brief stay as party member, her stat screen lists a "Boldness" stat, which starts at ''minus 16.''
* SinisterGeometry: On a Weird Route only, Noelle gains access to the OneHitKill spell [[DangerousForbiddenTechnique Snow]][[KillItWithIce Grave]]. When she's asked to use it against Berdly, it freezes him in a huge ice crystal shaped like a hexagon.
* TheSmartGal: The ''true'' smartest girl in class as Berdly needs her help, even calling her "the real smart girl". She seems to be good for teamwork, as she's able to organize with the whole gang to solve the mice and basket puzzle.
* SoLongAndThanksForAllTheGear:
** Being the GuestStarPartyMember in Chapter 2, she beomes unavailable when Ralsei and Susie reunite with Kris in the neutral route or she leaves as the death of Berdly sinks in during the Weird route. Once she's out of the party, she keeps all the gear she had on hand. This can include the [[DiscOneNuke Jevilstail]] from Chapter 1.
** You can also Invert this by taking her Silver Watch off her for your party to use, keeping it before she leaves the party. Since it provides decent defense and increases the turn-shortening effect of grazing, there's a few reasons for why you'd want to keep it around. Giving it back to her [[KickTheDog shows she doesn't appreciate having it taken away from her]], and in the Weird Route, this grants additional dialogue with her at the hospital.
* SquishyWizard: Even moreso than Ralsei. She's got the lowest HP of any playable character in Chapter 2 at a mere ninety hit points[[note]]The same as Chapter 1 Kris, and twenty more than Chapter 1 Ralsei.[[/note]] and even worse defense. But her magic is quite useful; besides Heal Prayer, she also has Sleep Mist, which instantly spares every Tired enemy. She also has [=IceShock=] (and possibly [=SnowGrave=]), both of which are very damaging.
* StealthPun:
** Observing her wristwatch in the Light World describes it as "stuck before half-past noon", which is 12:30 PM. It's implied to be set to 12:25 PM, keeping up with her Christmas theme.
** A darker example is how this icy deer reacts to stressful situations. She responds by either becoming petrified in place or by trying to appease the one who is troubling them. To put it bluntly, she is a freezing fawn.
* ThatCameOutWrong: If Kris tells her that Susie is terrible, she wonders if Alphys would let her switch partners with Kris, so they wouldn't be the one who has to get slammed into lockers.
* ThatWasNotADream: She reluctantly convinces herself that her adventure in the Dark World was all a dream. But if you have Kris equip her watch while she's in your party and then visit her in the hospital in the Weird Route epilogue, she'll notice Kris still wearing it and realize, to her horror, that it all actually happened, meaning she killed those people for real.
--> '''Noelle:''' ''(quivering)'' Why are you wearing... my watch? Wh... when did you...
* {{Thememobile}}: During the roller coaster segment of Chapter 2, Noelle gets a white and blue sleigh as a cart, with a snowflake pattern and a crown at its front.
* ThroughAFaceFullOfFur: Frequently blushes through her coat, usually because of [[CrushBlush Susie]].
* ThroughHerStomach: In Chapter 1, you can tell Noelle that Susie likes to eat chalk. If you do this, then in Chapter 2, Noelle will give Susie a lunchbox full of chalk. However, [[ObliviousToLove Susie]] doesn't pick up on what she means by it and yells (after Noelle leaves), "SHE HAD CHALK THIS WHOLE TIME? AND DIDN'T GIVE IT TO ALPHYS?"
* TokenReligiousTeammate: While Kris also comes from a religious household, Noelle is the much more outwardly religious of the two. In addition to her very blatant Christmas motifs in both her outfit and name, Rudy tells her when she visits him in the hospital that he hopes to see her in church on Sunday.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: She's the girly girl to Susie's tomboy, being the the more timid and soft-spoken of the two. This is even emphasized by their dark world personas; Susie plays the role of [[TheBigGuy The Big Girl]] whereas Noelle is a SquishyWizard.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Deconstructed in the Weird Route. Noelle starts as a rather clutzy wimp, being startled at the beginning of a battle, sighing in relief at the end, covering her eyes with her hands to defend and many of her actions involving flailing her arms helplessly. During the course of the route, she shows less fear of fighting, acts more confident and she's more eager to use her magic. However, all of this is the result of her becoming desensitized to the violence the player is subjecting her to, to the point that, towards the end, she doesn't even recognize Berdly, thinking of him as a random enemy and asks Kris if they want her to freeze him too.
** In the normal route, however, she manages to gain the confidence she needs to stand up to Queen while the latter has the Fun Gang hostage in the hand of her HumongousMecha.
* TragicIceCharacter: Can become this if you decide to take the Weird Route, where you force her (through Kris) to fatally freeze enemies and even her friend Berdly using her ice spells. This is played out very much like psychological manipulation, and it seems to legitimately [[CorruptTheCutie corrupt her mentally]] while also teaching her to rely on her ice magic more.
* TraumaButton:
** Something about the month of December causes her to completely lock up when she's reminded of it. It's why she lost a spelling bee to Berdly as a kid, as for a reason that has not yet been revealed, Noelle froze up at the word "December" and was unable to spell any letters, allowing Berdly to complete the word and win the competition. Also, when confiding in Kris about the past and the things she's had to go through, the letters in the puzzle spell out the word "DECEMBER".
** An NPC in Sans' shop mentions they once saw Noelle space out for a while when she opened the freezer in the back. Ironically, like with "December", she is surrounded by snow motifs and can learn ice spells that break the assumed rule of the player being unable to kill and seem [[CastFromHitPoints associated]] with self-harming.
* VisualPun: Her sweet personality makes her a real ''dear''.
* VoiceGrunting: A soft, high-pitched whinny. She also has a scream that is [[SyntheticVoiceActor artificially produced]] since voice acting is primarily limited to [[{{Superboss}} the holders of the Shadow Crystals]]. The fact alone that she has her own text sound effect [[{{Foreshadowing}} foreshadows]] that she's not just a background character.
* WeakWilled: A darker aspect of Noelle's passive nature is that the player is more capable of exerting their will upon her, even to commit acts of violence that other party members won't do. If you (through Kris) simply insist Noelle do something enough times, she'll enter a trance where she does so without even realizing or clearly remembering her actions. Even when she decides to abandon Kris after being pushed into freezing Berdly on the Weird route, she still comes to their rescue when her name is called out against Spamton NEO. If you go on the normal route, however, she'll [[GrewASpine Grow A Spine]] and stands up against Queen on her own.
* YouthfulFreckles: Sports a couple on her cheeks that make her look even more cute and innocent.

[[caption-width-right:168:''"Well jingle my goshdarn bells! Looks like Krismas came early!"'']]

Noelle's father, and husband to the mayor. Currently hospitalized for an unspecified illness.
----
* AffectionateNickname: He sometimes calls Kris by the name "Krismas".
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: When he's introduced to Susie in Chapter 2, he loudly and blatantly makes it clear that Noelle talks about her "a lot", leaving Noelle so mortified that she ''immediately'' blurts out that she has to leave and darts out of the room.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Chapter 1 has him say that he wishes Noelle wasn't so "defenseless", wanting to get out of the hospital so he can protect her. A Chapter 2 Weird run can certainly [[ArcWords make her stronger]], at extreme mental cost to his own daughter with absolutely no idea of any of it.
* {{Catchphrase}}: Always voices a willingness to kick people's asses, whether it be over how Berdly treats Noelle or Sans giving Asgore free pickles out of pity. He also does it to Susie as a joke thanks to his daughter's crush on her.
* DefinitelyJustACold: He puts on a brave face when talking to Noelle and Kris, but certain dialogue cues strongly hint that whatever he's been hospitalized for is [[IncurableCoughOfDeath terminal]]. It doesn't help that his ''Undertale'' counterpart is long dead, which is ''not'' a good sign in itself.
* FunPersonified: Even when bedridden, he's full of good humor and loves to crack jokes.
* GayBravado: If you inspect the bouquet of roses, he jokes that Asgore was trying to go for something ''Literature/BeautyAndTheBeast''-themed when he points out that they're both beasts. Inspecting it again has him say that he should have just asked him out to prom outright. It's hard to say if it's this trope or if he's seriously flirting with him, but since he has a wife and considers Asgore a friend, it's most likely the former.
* GentleTouchVsFirmHand: Rudy considers his congenial attitude to his daughter a way to balance out her more strict mother.
* GoodParents: He's fully supportive of his daughter and loves her dearly, even if he's bedridden and can't do much for her in his current state. The affection is mutual.
* HerbivoresAreFriendly: He's a deer-like Lightner, and the loving father of Noelle who just wants what's best for her.
* MaliciousMisnaming: Calls Berdly "Nerdly" and wants to kick his ass. From Berdly and Noelle's backstories in Chapter 2, it's likely this is due to Berdly taking advantage of Noelle's status as NiceGirl to [[FeigningIntelligence look smarter than he is]].
* MeaningfulName: [[Literature/RudolphTheRedNosedReindeer A certain holiday-themed reindeer]] may come to mind. He doesn't have a red nose, though.
* NiceGuy: He's friendly, jovial, and generally pleasant to be around. It's not hard to see where Noelle gets it from.
* OldFriend: He's been a friend of Asgore and Toriel since their college days. Asgore even chose him as best man for their wedding.
* OpenMindedParent: He's fully aware of Noelle having a lesbian crush on Susie, and he all but [[ShipperOnDeck encourages it]]. He even tries to enable Susie into reciprocating by having a one-on-one conversation with her where he tells her all of Noelle's personal interests.
* PieInTheFace: According to his backstory, Toriel was a "total nut" who once hit him in the face with a key lime pie during a party in college.
* ShipperOnDeck: Tries to get Noelle past the CantSpitItOut phase involving Susie, and in Chapter 2's Weird route, he actually keeps Susie in his hospital room briefly where he gives her the lowdown on his daughter's interests off-screen. Susie, being [[ObliviousToLove Susie]], finds it both informatively neat and also confusing.
* VoiceGrunting: Similar to Noelle's, except much deeper, and one that sounds like he's coughing or wheezing.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mrs. Holiday]]
->''"I'm sorry, I'm sorry. The mayor is busy right now. If you need to see her, please try causing some terrible crisis."''
-->-- '''Town Hall Receptionist'''
The Mayor of Hometown, mother to Noelle and Dess, and Rudy's wife.
----
* GentleTouchVsFirmHand: Her own husband openly thinks she goes pretty hard on their daughter. Rudy views this parenting style as complimentary to his own, but too much for Noelle when he's laid up in the hospital, and it likely contributes to her timidity.
* TheGhost: In the first two chapters, as her office is blocked off and she's only referenced briefly in the Hometown sections. Even her name goes unmentioned, with her name on this page being speculative.
* ParentsAsPeople: She really does care about Noelle and wants what's best for her, but also imposes strict standards for her daughter. She's so harsh that, when Noelle gets locked out of their home in Chapter 1's epilogue and is stuck behind their locked gate, she would rather continue waiting outside instead of trying to ask her mother for help while she's busy.
* ToughLove: According to Rudy, at least. Though she does love her daughter, she has a tendency to be very harsh on Noelle, expecting her to live up to very high standards. Rudy helps to balance her out normally but given his stay in the hospital, worries that it's going to be very tough on Noelle.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Downplayed. Those who care about politics in Hometown really like her, but plenty of other people don't really care, since it's a relatively slow and small town where not much happens. It's also noted that many people are not a fan of her harsh personality but because she's a very hard worker who does a great job at running the town, she has run unopposed for years.

->''"I always wanted to go someplace new, you know? ... And Dess... always told me she'd take me. Somewhere like this. Somewhere with shining lights."''
-->-- '''Noelle Holiday'''

Noelle's older sister[[note]]Investigating the angel doll in Rudy's hospital room in Chapter 1 has him explain it was made by Noelle and Dess, doing the same in Chapter 2 has him clarify and says it was made by Noelle and her sister.[[/note]] who isn't around anymore. She used to hang out with Kris, Asriel, and Noelle when they were kids.
----
* AmbiguousSituation: While Noelle's wistful tone when thinking about Dess suggests she isn't around anymore, it isn't made entirely clear why Dess is no longer present. Coupled with Noelle's unexplained trauma over snowy weather and the word "December", and it seems apparent that ''[[NoodleIncident something]]'' happened concerning Dess some time ago, but it has yet to be elaborated as to what.
* BatterUp: One of the first mentions of Dess is an anecdote of her smacking Kris with a wiffle bat.
* BigSisterInstinct: Kris once scared Noelle by claiming ICE-E was real and ate children, causing Dess to hit Kris with a wiffle bat until they stopped lying. This is implied to be Dess's usual reaction to such situations, as Noelle says that Kris is lucky Dess isn't around while Kris causes mice to scare her by failing puzzles in Chapter 2.
* ChildhoodFriend: Based on what Noelle says about Dess, she knew Kris and Asriel when they were kids and used to hang out with them as well.
%%* EarlyBirdCameo: As with Noelle, she's mentioned by Asgore by Noelle
* FamilyThemeNaming: "Dess" is how one could pronounce "DEC", the abbreviation for December, making it fit with the Holiday family's Christmas-related names.
* TheGhost: Dess is never shown on-screen. She's only mentioned by name by Noelle and Rudy, once each in optional dialogue in Chapter 1 and then during a puzzle segment with Noelle during a non-Weird route of Chapter 2.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: It is implied during Chapter 2 that "Dess" is short for "December". The puzzle in which Noelle first mentions Dess spells out the word "DECEMBER" in its letters, and the word "December" also hit Noelle's TraumaButton during a spelling bee when they were children. The calendar in Noelle's room at Queen's castle is entirely made out of December 25th because she kept doing online searches for "December Holiday".
* RememberTheNewGuy: She and Noelle are revealed to have existed in the ''Undertale'' universe by the Alarm Clock App and Sans' Dog Shrine dialogue in the [=XBox=] One version, even living in Snowdin during the events of the game, but it's only their alternate-universe counterparts in ''Deltarune'' that actually have a major role.
* ShoutOut: She's first mentioned hitting someone with a (wiffle) bat, calling to mind Ness from ''VideoGame/EarthBound1994'', who fights with bats and has a very similar name.

A blue anthropomorphic bird. The (self-proclaimed) smartest guy in class, he's quite smug about his intelligence. In Chapter 2, he winds up in Cyber World with Noelle and starts serving Queen, becoming the secondary antagonist against the Three Heroes.

----

* AbhorrentAdmirer: Despite being much more willing to do her bidding than Noelle, Queen can't stand him, even when he sings her praises. She constantly tries to ditch or get rid of him, and his smug, condescending attitude is PlayedForLaughs when it annoys Queen to no end. It’s also downplayed in regards to Susie and possibly Noelle: they tolerate him enough (Noelle actually considers him a friend) but they sometimes find him annoying and like each other much more than they like him (while Berdly develops a crush on Susie and it’s possible he had one on Noelle too, even if he claims he just pretended to reciprocate her supposed feelings towards him).
* AcademicAlphaBitch: Rejects Kris as a project partner, because he thinks they're not smart enough to get him an ''A'', and afterward actively sabotages Noelle's attempt to let Kris into the group by interrupting her when she tries to talk to Alphys. Ironically, he's FeigningIntelligence.
* AllJustADream: At the end of Chapter 2, Berdly is convinced that his adventure in the Cyber World was just a dream.
* AllLoveIsUnrequited: Hilariously, he believes this to be the case with Noelle, [[EntertaininglyWrong whom he's thoroughly convinced is attracted to him]] despite he himself not having feelings for her. She doesn't either, [[IncompatibleOrientation as she's more interested in Susie]]... [[{{Irony}} whom he]] ''[[{{Irony}} also]]'' [[{{Irony}} has a crush on]]. Noelle, understandably, has a FreakOut when she learns this.
* AlwaysSecondBest:
** To Noelle in studying, although he acts like he's this to Noelle, the only time he bested her was when she froze up trying to spell "[[TraumaButton December]]" in a spelling bee contest. From there, Noelle started being somewhat of a school tutor for him and allowed him to claim all the credit as his own genius. In truth, [[FeigningIntelligence he's actually quite dumb and very incapable of doing good academic effort by himself]], unable to solve the puzzles in the Cyber World, with even Susie coming up with an idea to solve a puzzle that had left Berdly utterly stumped.
** To Kris in gaming, considering he never brags about being a better gamer to Kris despite his smug attitude, and one of his check info states he gets mad at Kris when he plays games together with them.
** To [[TheAce Asriel]] in everything; Asriel is smart enough to have various medals in his room, good enough at gaming to face Kris with a knock-off controller, volunteering, and [[LovedByAll not even a single person in Hometown dislikes him]].
* AmazonChaser: He eventually develops a crush on Susie. When Noelle finds out, she shakes him silly.
* AndThenWhat: Lampshaded. He's dead set on being known across town as an academic prodigy, using Noelle's help while she lets him take the reputation of being number one in their class. However, Berdly fears being unable to live up to others' expectations without her help, especially when he keeps considering the strong possibility that they'll go their separate ways at some point. And Berdly admits that he has no idea what he'd do without Noelle's help.
* ApologyGift: After Queen's defeat, Noelle and Susie mull the idea of spreading the Dark World over and conclude that it's the right thing to do. Berdly concurs and decides to use the last of his strength to make the next Fountain as his "real" apology. Ralsei admonishes them before he can do it.
* AscendedExtra: Went from a minor character in Chapter 1 to the [[TheDragon secondary antagonist]] of Chapter 2.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: His Dark World appearance is a WholeCostumeReference to [[VideoGame/StarFox Falco]] and has a lot in common with the dog-fighting pheasant, being an arrogant loudmouth who's overly competitive even with his own "teammates" but [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold ultimately demonstrates he's a good person deep down]]. At one point, he even complains about [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosMelee wavedashing]].
* BewareTheSillyOnes:
** Despite how comically insufferable he tends to be, his two boss fights do show he's a very capable fighter in his own right in the Dark World.
** While it doesn't quite end well, during the Weird Route, judging from his dialogue before the fight, and his attack patterns getting significantly more difficult to avoid, and especially contrasting his usual personality and attacks, it's clear that if Berdly can tell something is seriously wrong, he'll do all he can to put a stop to it.
* BigBadWannabe: He believes himself to have formed a BigBadDuumvirate with Queen, who has trouble even ''pretending'' to respect him. Once the gloves come off from Queen, she shows that she could have gotten rid of him any time she felt like it.
* BigDamnHeroes: The heroes become heavily outmatched once Queen mans her giant robot form, and when they're knocked off the platform, Berdly dives in on his rollercoaster, carrying all the Darkners you befriended leading up to this point. He uses his old statue as the base for the proceeding components to the CombiningMecha, giving the party the form they need to fight Queen on even footing.
* BigEgoHiddenDepths: It turns out [[InferioritySuperiorityComplex he's well aware he's not as smart as he proclaims he is]], and that the fear of losing his spot atop the class utterly terrifies him.
* BigNo: He lets one out when he learns that [[FauxHorrific Queen is a mobile gamer]].
* BlowYouAway: Uses wind-based magic in the Dark World, [[TornadoMove most prominently to blow mini tornadoes at you]].
-->'''Noelle:''' He hit me in the face with a tornado.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Queen brainwashes Berdly as a weapon for her boss battle like a Werewire.
* BreakTheHaughty: In Chapter 2, courtesy of Kris completing a sequences of puzzles that have Berdly himself stumped (and Susie offering the correct solution for the last one as a finishing blow). When Susie calls him out on how he's always lorded his supposed intellect over others, only to turn out to have FeetOfClay, Berdly folds and admits he's never been a prodigy.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: Almost literally. In the fight against Queen where she has him ReforgedIntoAMinion, if you don't loosen the cable enough (or defeated him with violence in either of the previous two encounters before this), he'll rip it off by himself at the end through sheer HeroicWillpower, at the cost of electrocuting his right arm. This carries over into the Light World; although the burns aren't there, his arm will be paralyzed.
* BullyTurnedBuddy: By the end of Chapter 2, after the fountain has been sealed, Susie excuses their presence, claiming they accepted after Noelle invited them over to study earlier. Even when Berdly is still convinced that it was AllJustADream, he stops his usual mocking of Kris and Susie to actually welcome the idea of another study session with them.
* ButtMonkey: He suffers a good amount of comical punishment and humiliation throughout chapter 2 ''and'' can end up either with a paralyzed arm if not helped out properly on a normal run or killed by Noelle in the Weird route.
* CannotSpitItOut: [[EntertaininglyWrong Despite being convinced that Susie is as head over heels for him as he is for her,]] Berdly never confesses his love for her at a volume loud enough for her to actually hear.
--> '''Berdly:''' (Only a kiss from a beautiful gamer girl can save me now)... \
'''Susie:''' Berdly... ''[Screen slowly fades to pink]'' \
'''Susie:''' ''[Screen cuts back to normal]'' What? Like, get you're like, losing consciousness and stuff, but, Could you speak up? \
'''Berdly:''' ''[Visibly flustered]'' Umm, aha, s-sorry, suddenly I... I... I'm feeling a bit better!
* CharacterDevelopment: Even after being convinced that it was AllJustADream after Kris sealed the fountain, he decides that he could at least try studying with Kris and Susie. It's subtle, but it's there. Should his arm be paralyzed, he also compliments Noelle for always helping him out when she picks up his books.
* ChekhovsGunman: Supporting character in Chapter 1 turned major character in Chapter 2.
* ClimaxBoss: Of the Snowgrave route. He is the last opponent faced before the player is permanently locked into the route, and defeating him marks the point where Noelle goes from killing random Darkners on Kris' behalf to killing one of her own friends.
* CondescendingCompassion: Berdly isn't openly smug to Noelle like most people and tries to look out for her, but does not respect her opinion or listen to her. On more than one occasion, Berdly has called her weak and helpless without him. This is especially condescending since Berdly wouldn't be atop the class if it weren't for Noelle.
* CruelAndUnusualDeath: On the Weird Route, Berdly ends up being frozen solid by the fatal [[KillItWithIce [=SnowGrave=] spell]], a fate that carries over to his unresponsiveness in the Light World.
* DeclarativeFinger: An [[https://i.redd.it/a5j775m19ys71.png as-of-yet-unused]] sprite depicts Berdly in this pose, with a book open in his other hand. Given Berdly's pseudo-intellectual personality, this is likely meant to be him posturing.
* DelusionsOfEloquence: He often speaks quite verbosely, even deriding Kris and Susie as "protozoans", but in the end, he's reliant on studying with Noelle to do well.
* TheDragon: To Queen throughout Chapter 2, [[TheThingThatWouldNotLeave although she very much wishes that wasn't the case]]. While he does eventually pull a HeelFaceTurn, he's temporarily [[BrainwashedAndCrazy forced]] into being her ally once again during her boss battle, but he manages to break out of it.
* DragonInChief: Ultimately subverted. Berdly is more antagonistic towards the Three Heroes (especially Kris) throughout Chapter 2 thanks to Queen's AffablyEvil status and truce with Kris. However, while Berdly is more antagonistic, Queen is the bigger threat, pulling an EvilerThanThou on him by imprisoning and then brainwashing him.
* DrunkWithPower: After winning a spelling bee against Noelle, he became obsessed with the reputation of being smart. Unfortunately, he's not that smart on his own, so he tries to keep Noelle close to him so that she can help him study to maintain his status as "the smart kid". Even then, he only won because they were both asked to spell the word "December", which hit a TraumaButton for Noelle and prevented her from speaking.
* DualBoss: He fights alongside Queen in her first boss battle, albeit while under her control.
* DumbMuscle: Perhaps even more than Susie when in the Dark World. He's pretty strong in the Dark World and is even more difficult than Susie and Lancer's DualBoss fight, but he isn't inherently intelligent, having to have Noelle with him to appear smart, and has very, ''very'' poor common sense.
* DumbIsGood: Parodied. After Susie and Lancer tell him that he shouldn't be so hard on himself and should [[BeYourself stop worrying about keeping up academic appearances]], he's immensely relieved to know he'll be accepted even if he's "dumb". They try to say that's not what they meant and that nobody's perfect, but Berdly's interpretation of this makes him double down to "fight for the side of ignorance".
-->'''Susie:''' ''[After the Ferris Wheel ride with Noelle]'' It's fine!!! Berdly's gonna help!! We're allies!!\
'''Berdly:''' Yes!! Don't worry, Noelle!! I'm stupid now!!\
'''Susie:''' (He's good!!!)
* {{Egopolis}}: His main motivation to join Queen's side in Chapter 2 is to build a utopia called "Smartopia", where the smart rule over others.
* EntertaininglyWrong:
** When he encounters Kris and Noelle, he recognizes how forced Noelle feels about their situation with serving Queen. Noelle almost expresses relief that he actually understands her, but he then claims it's because Kris kidnapped her and forced her to do their bidding, in disbelief that the two had made a truce of their own. Cue him initiating a battle to "save" Noelle from Kris.
** During the attempt to rescue her, he feels the need to apologize to Noelle -- not just because of how rude he's been, but because he believes the only reason she helps him so much is because ''she has a crush on him'', and now needs to let her down for leading her on. Then he braces for her reaction to what he says next... because she shouldn't be jealous since ''he'' now has a crush on Susie. Noelle freaks out [[EnragedByIdiocy for different reasons]].
** After breaking free from Queen's wire, he recognizes that Susie has serious concern for Noelle, and interprets it as a sign that she's romantically interested... in him.
* EntitledToHaveYou: Both played straight in a platonic sense and subverted in a romantic one. Berdly thoughtlessly monopolizes Noelle's time to ensure his own academic success, but despite seeming delusions of RescueRomance, he is not attracted to her.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Even though he doesn't exactly treat Noelle very well, Berdly drops his smug attitude and expresses outright concern for Noelle's well-being upon noticing how [[TheCorruptor "Kris"]] (or rather, YOU) has been treating her on the Weird route. Should you persist and order Noelle to "proceed", Berdly will then go to attack Kris, and Kris only, to try and break Noelle free from "their" spell.
-->'''Berdly:''' Th-that's it, Kris! I don't know what you're doing... But if you're hurting my friend Noelle... Then I have no choice but to stop you by force! Kris, ready yourself!!
* EvilCounterpart: Berdly can be considered this to Lancer: both are silly characters who are TheHeavy to their respective chapters' antagonists (who both use them to threaten the heroes during their boss fights), are far [[KnowNothingKnowItAll less intelligent]] than they want to show, depend on a far more competent female character on their respective fields (Susie for Lancer and Noelle for Berdly), and [[BigDamnHeroes help the heroes]] [[HeelFaceTurn at the last second]] during the final boss battle. However, while Lancer actually was a FriendlyEnemy and helped Susie having a HeelRealization, Berdly, despite his silliness, is a serious antagonist during physical battles and has to be given a lesson by Kris.
* FalseFriend: Downplayed. His friendship with Noelle [[DownplayedTrope is not entirely false]], as he does show subtle signs he cares about her, but he does force her to partner with him on all projects just so he can get an A+ and keep up his reputation as TheSmartGuy.
* FeetOfClay: For all his talk of being smarter than everyone else and acting like an InsufferableGenius, he's not really that smart. Kris solves puzzles that he struggled with, and when Susie of all people gets an idea that allows Kris to solve the last puzzle Berdly is present for, he finally breaks down and admits that Noelle was always the smart one.
* FeigningIntelligence: Played with. He ''is'' smart, just not as smart as he pretends to be. While Berdly was legitimately smart enough to be one of the final two contestants in a childhood spelling bee, he only won the bee because his opponent Noelle froze up and couldn't spell "December" since it hit a TraumaButton for her. But since Berdly gained praise from his peers from winning the spelling bee, Berdly became obsessed with maintaining his image as a prodigy and a genius. So in the present day, he gets Noelle's help in studying to maintain his position at the top of the class, portraying himself as more intelligent than he actually is. And as it turns out, he is ''terrible'' at things that require "outside-the-box" solutions, particularly puzzles... including one which even ''Susie'' is able to give Kris an idea on how to solve it.
* FlunkyBoss: {{Downplayed}}. He summons a pair of Werewires to help him in his second fight, but doesn't summon more when they are defeated, insisting that the original ones will come back ([[InUniverseFactoidFailure even though sparing them frees them from their control]]).
* ForgottenFallenFriend: While "friend" may be a bit of a stretch, nobody seems to be especially concerned that Berdly could very well be dead in the Weird route, Susie not questioning why he's the only one who never woke up from their shared experience. Noelle, though, is clearly in denial and there's a good chance that Kris realized Berdly died and [[DisposingOfABody stuffed him in the closet]] while "taking care" of the computer room's contents.
* FreudianExcuse: As revealed in Chapter 2, Berdly used to be such a complete nobody that no one even remembered his name. Then, during a spelling bee where he and Noelle were the final contestants, she froze up on the word "December", because something about the month of December hits her TraumaButton ("December" is implied to be the full name of Noelle's older sister, Dess, and ''something'' happened to said sister). Berdly completed the word to win the spelling bee, and the ensuing praise from his peers was the first time Berdly had ever been acknowledged for his intelligence. As a result, Berdly got addicted to the prospect of being smarter than everyone else. However, he's only top of the class because he's gotten help studying from Noelle -- "the real smart kid," in Berdly's own words. And with everyone's expectations for him so high by now, he's ''terrified'' of what'll happen [[AndThenWhat when he and Noelle inevitably part ways someday]]. Queen was able to prey on that insecurity to make him do a FaceHeelTurn.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: Thanks to his InsufferableGenius attitude, no one likes hanging out with him. The only person who might ''arguably'' be a real friend to him is Noelle, and even she gets fed up with his crap.
* FurryReminder: After Susie and Noelle finish their FerrisWheelDateMoment Berdly enters the scene by flying in, flapping his arms while doing so. He also mentions that, as a bird, he doesn't (currently) have nipples.
* GameplayAndStoryIntegration: During the second fight with him on the Snowgrave route, where he's trying to rescue Noelle from Kris' malign influence, his attacks will exclusively injure Kris and ignore Noelle. He doesn't turn on Noelle until Kris is incapacitated, Noelle makes it clear that she's still under their sway, and Berdly realizes he's going to have to defend himself with force.
* GreenEyedMonster:
** With Noelle being the only friend he has, Berdly tends to be jealous of Kris for being Noelle's trusted childhood friend. He tries to stop Noelle from inviting them as a partner for their class project in Chapter 1, and when they meet at the roller coaster section of Chapter 2, he claims they must be jealous of him and Noelle for being at the top of the class. Later, he rescinds their so-called "truce" and fights both Kris ''and'' Noelle to get the latter over to his side, "for [her] own good". His Check description during this specific battle claims he only ever gets this mad "when you play games together".
** He believes being the "smart kid" of the class is the only thing he has and always wants to keep the appearance up. Any time Kris solves puzzles, he angrily insists being smarter than them, first urging them to tell others that he was the one who solved the mouse puzzle. And while he knows and admits that Noelle's the real smart kid, wanting to make a "Smartopia" for her in appreciation, it still involved making them "number 1 ''and'' number 2".
** In the Dark World, the sclera of his eyes are literally green.
* GuestStarPartyMember: Parodied. Just like Lancer's brief turn in Chapter 1, Berdly also "joins" the party very briefly for a single screen in which there are no enemy encounters, and then disappears immediately upon moving on to the next area. This also only happens if you choose to give the prize to him or if you have the original [[gold:Starwalker]] in your inventory.
* HappyPlace: He's a believer in the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Method_of_loci method of loci]] memorization strategy, and as such sometimes talks about retreating into his "mind palace", which he uses to help jog his memory during the mansion's spotlight puzzles.
* TheHeavy: While Queen doesn't wait in her mansion like King did, she's too busy making trucies with Kris to be considered an active antagonist. Despite his silliness, Berdly's jealousy and ([[ProfessionalButtKisser interested]]) [[SycophanticServant devotion]] towards Queen makes him the most dangerous antagonist of Chapter 2 before his HeelFaceTurn.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: In Chapter 1, he starts off as a face NPC, although he's a jerk about it. In Chapter 2, Berdly turns heel when he allies himself with Queen, turns semi-face after pairing up with the Three Heroes, and then turns full face after he admits that he's not that smart and vows to rescue Noelle.
* HeelRealization: Kris exposing Berdly as being not as smart as he claims to be has him give off his FreudianExcuse of winning the spelling bee. However, during this explanation, Berdly comes to see how badly he's been treating Noelle, causing him to pull a HeelFaceTurn and come up with a plan to save her.
* HeroicSecondWind: He's weakened after being wired up by Queen, so he doesn't join Kris and the others in the final fight against Queen... initially. When Queen breaks out her giant robot and all hope seems lost, Berdly returns, having gathered up all the people you've recruited and befriended along the way to join in the fight.
* HeroicWannabe: Berdly tries to be [[LadyAndKnight Noelle's "knight in glow-in-the-dark armor"]], but mostly ends up endangering her and the people actually trying to help her. Queen even uses the threat of hurting Berdly to keep Noelle in line.
* HeroicWillpower: If you defeat Queen with violence, he manages to take off the mind-control plug by himself. Unfortunately, it damages his arm, which carries over to the Light World.
* HiddenDepths:
** For as much of a blowhard as Berdly can be, he's genuinely courageous. In particular, on the Weird Route, he refuses to back down and flee even when something is disturbingly wrong with Kris and Noelle. On the regular route, he also manages to scare Queen off with the threat of a four-on-one fight even though he can barely stand and all Queen had to do was call his bluff. Despite still being drained, he also rushes to round up all the Darkners the heroes befriended to help them against Giga Queen.
** There's also a few hints that he's more self-aware than he seems. In particular, he completely drops the LargeHam act on the Weird Route — and if you abort the route during the conversation immediately before fighting him, he asks himself what he was worrying about, since Kris is his friend, right before resuming his hammy act and dramatically challenging them to a fight, making it clear that his normal behavior isn't serious.
* HighSpeedBattle: His first boss fight is this, with Queen summoning him after she realizes Noelle isn't willing to fight. The Pacifist outcome involves ramming your carts at his until his coaster explodes.
* HopelessSuitor: It's initially implied he's got a thing for Noelle while [[LipstickLesbian Noelle's got a thing for Susie]], but it gets Subverted in that he only likes her platonically. [[ZigZaggingTrope Although]], he ''did'' act interested in her because he [[EntertaininglyWrong mistakenly believed]] ''she'' was crushing on ''him''. By the end of Chapter 2, he may be turning into one of these for Susie, who even aside from any ShipTease would [[AbhorrentAdmirer absolutely not be interested]] given their current standing, as well as the fact that Susie seems to have started developing feelings for Noelle.
* IncompatibleOrientation: Subverted. He seems to have a massive crush on Noelle, but eventually reveals that he was faking this because he thought she would stop hanging out with him if he didn't... Because his ego has him [[ItsAllAboutMe completely convinced that SHE is into him.]] Revealing this only furthers Noelle's EnragedByIdiocy moment before he really cinches it with the reveal of his affections for Susie (who [[LipstickLesbian Noelle]] is ACTUALLY crushing on). Not that literally any character he has or ''seems'' to have a thing for would ever be interested anyway.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: His entire obnoxious personality and obsession with looking smart is ultimately only a cover for his deep-seated feelings of inadequacy. After Kris solves a puzzle that he couldn't, Berdly admits that winning a spelling bee over Noelle was the best he's ever felt in his entire life, and he's continuously chased that high of being admired again. However, Berdly also admits that [[AndThenWhat he has no idea what he'd do if Noelle wasn't around anymore]], which he knows is coming some day. He also admits that Noelle is way smarter than he is, and this constant worrying is eating away at him.
* InsufferableGenius: Though it's all an act. Berdly acts smugly superior to everyone else, convinced he's way more intelligent than everyone around him. However, he fully admits later that he's not as smart as he pretends to be. He only won a spelling bee when he was a kid because Noelle froze up at the word [[TraumaButton "December"]], and the ego boost went to his head. However, Berdly admits that it's all just an act, and Noelle is really the smart one.
* InsufferableImbecile: Even when he comes to terms with his InferioritySuperiorityComplex and embraces his own stupidity, it doesn't diminish his arrogance in the least. He instead starts bragging about how dumb he is, and thus how much better of a person he is, which is ComicallyMissingThePoint of Noelle's attempts to convince Berdly to [[BeYourself be himself]].
* ItsAllAboutMe:
** Part of the reason he interrupts Noelle from inviting Kris to join their study group is because they could drag his GPA down. He also has a habit of interrupting her whenever she tries to do something for herself, bragging that he'll do it for her.
** Escalates by Chapter 2 when he's in the Dark World, believing he's the true hero of the story with the power of a "Light Nerd" and planning to make a "Smartopia" where he and Noelle will be number 1 and 2 over everyone. His idea of a gift for Queen is a giant muscular golden stature of himself with a Queen statue hanging off one of its arms. When he tries to apologize to Noelle for how he's been later on, he adds that she's ''clearly'' only been helping him because she has a crush on him. When Susie expresses wanting to save Noelle before the climactic fight, Berdly takes it as a sign that Susie's fallen for him.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Tells Kris that they wouldn't have so much trouble getting a good partner if they had been on time. He's right, but the way he says it is just unnecessarily condescending.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Smug, condescending, and takes advantage of Noelle's kindness to walk all over her. Even after he joins the good guys, he's still sort of a dick, though [[BreakTheHaughty his ego takes a real bruising]]. Underneath this masking his inferiority complex lies a teenaged boy who sincerely cares about his friend Noelle and gradually, if only slightly, warms up to the heroes after opening up about why he is the way he is. In the Weird Route, he stops acting like an egomaniac and acts immensely concerned for Noelle’s safety when he notices she doesn’t recognize him while acting strangely distant and, while he has no idea what’s going on, seems to realize Kris is acting as a negative and toxic influence around her, sporting a serious expression on his face when he fights Kris instead of his usual cocky smirk, focusing his attacks exclusively on Kris and taking the fight deadly seriously. Even before his HeelFaceTurn, Queen will note there's nothing really wrong with him, he's just annoying.
* KillItWithIce: On the Weird Route, Berdly becomes a victim of Noelle's [=SnowGrave=] spell, encasing him in a huge, hexagonal ice crystal.
* KnowNothingKnowItAll: PlayedWith. He scores on his schoolwork pretty consistently well, but that's only because Noelle helps him study. On the other hand, he struggles whenever he has to figure something out for himself, even with simple problems such as the spotlight puzzle in Queen's mansion -- for comparison, [[DumbMuscle Susie]] was able to suggest a strategy for the third iteration of the puzzle while Berdly was sputtering to himself trying to figure out a solution. Heck, he makes [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Lancer]] look smart, especially when they're in the same room.
* LargeHam: Berdly is not one for subtlety and almost always introduces himself in a loud, bold, and ridiculously dramatic way.
-->'''Berdly:''' Fear not, my beloved Noelle!! This valiant warrior of brave intelligence will be your knight in glow in the dark armor!
* LaserBlade: He uses a green energy halberd with a yellow ax blade as an weapon in the Dark World, although he mainly uses it as a focus for his wind magic. He also summons it when he decides to create a new Dark Fountain as an ApologyGift to Noelle, although it disappears when Ralsei interrupts him.
* {{Leitmotif}}: His main theme is "[[https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/track/berdly Berdly]]", a short chiptune waltz.
** His BossRemix is "[[https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/track/smart-race Smart Race]]", and forms part of "[[https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/track/attack-of-the-killer-queen Attack of the Killer Queen]]" during his DualBoss fight alongside Queen.
** "[[https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/track/bluebird-of-misfortune Bluebird of Misfortune]]" is a slower, simpler DarkReprise of his theme that plays during his HeelRealization.
* LetsGetDangerous: Downplayed in the Weird Route fight against him. While he doesn't have all the details, Berdly becomes serious and laser-focused on bringing Kris down once he realizes Kris (possessed by the SOUL) has been manipulating Noelle. He drops his usual condescending attitude and sports an angrier expression in-battle, while his attack patterns become more aggressive and harder to dodge. This still doesn't guarantee Noelle's safety ''or'' Kris' defeat; that's for the SOUL to decide.
* LikesOlderWomen: Infatuated with the clearly much older Queen, although this might just be because she told him she was a GamerChick.
* ALizardNamedLiz: He's a bird and his name is Berdly (the "berd" part being pronounced identically to "bird").
* {{Malaproper}}: After Kris saves Noelle by solving the mouse puzzles, he bitterly tries to call it a fluke by saying, "Even a broken clock is right once a day", instead of "twice".
* MaliciousMisnaming: Noelle's father calls him "Nerdly". He also asks her to bring him to the window of the hospital so he can throw something at him since he's unable to "kick his ass" due to being bedridden.
* {{Metaphorgotten}}: Tries to make excuses for Kris being capable of solving puzzles before he can even get started, saying they rely on brute force like cavemen. Then he retracts by saying that [[InsultToRocks cavemen died out from being too stupid]].
* MomentKiller: After Noelle and Susie share an awkward-but-sweet conversation on a Ferris Wheel and Susie seems to be starting to ask Noelle to spend more time together, he comes floating down and completely spoils the mood. Mercilessly lampshaded by Noelle:
-->'''Berdly''': Noelle! My lady! The cavalry has arrived to rescue you!\
'''Noelle''': (Oh, the good part of the dream is over...)
* MustMakeAmends: He eventually realizes that he'd become so wrapped up in creating a "Smartopia" for himself and Noelle, that he ended up manipulated by Queen, putting her in danger as a (potentially roboticized) pawn. [[ComicallyMissingThePoint And]] because he thinks [[EntertaininglyWrong he's been leading Noelle on all this time with a supposed crush on him]]. He becomes motivated to save Noelle with the heroes' help and gives much more sincere apologies to Noelle before Kris seals the Fountain.
* {{Narcissist}}: To the point where he commissions Sweet Cap'n Cakes to build a giant gold statue of himself, with a [[{{Hunk}} buff physique]] and no clothes except a pair of Crocs and a speedo that says [[InsufferableGenius "IQ"]].
* NerdyNasalness: His {{voice grunt|ing}}s are noticeably high-pitched and somewhat raspy, which fits his nerdish appearance and mannerisms.
* NonMammalianMammaries: Parodied. Despite being a bird, the statue he sculpts of himself depicts him with nipples, which Queen [[LampshadeHanging notes with surprise]]. If Kris chooses to gift Berdly the stall prize, it will be a plush of him that also has nipples, which causes him to admit he doesn't ''actually'' have nipples... but he wishes he did, for some reason.
* NoSocialSkills: He cannot tell when Queen is lying to him, even when it is literally written on her face in the from of the word "LYING" displayed on her visor. Additionally, he also misses [[EveryoneCanSeeIt Noelle's very obvious crush on Susie]] and mistakes Noelle helping him study as romantic advances on her part.
* NoTrueScotsman: After spending all of Chapter 2 thinking Queen is a gamer like him, Berdly is mortified when he discovers that she only plays mobile games. On the other end of this, he appreciates Susie for making an actual ''Dragon Blazers 2'' reference and christens her "a true gamer", much to her chagrin.
* OhCrap: Just as Noelle casts [=SnowGrave=] on him in the Weird route, his eyes widen in shock and horror. [[CruelAndUnusualDeath And for good reason, too.]]
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When you encounter him in Chapter 2's Weird Route, he drops all of his InsufferableGenius behavior and simply warns Noelle to get away from [[TheCorruptor Kris/the Player]].
* PaperMaster: One of his signature attacks is barraging you with a BulletHell made of papers, all graded with an A+.
* PointOfNoReturn: You can dip out of the Weird Route at any time ''before'' you command Noelle to cast [[CruelAndUnusualDeath SnowGrave]] on him. But if you force Noelle to cast [=SnowGrave=], Berdly is frozen solid and you're locked in.
* {{Portmanteau}}: His name is a combation of "bird" and "nerd" with the suffix "-ly" to make it sound more like a name.
* PsychologicalProjection: Berdly always talks down to Kris, and plenty others, for not being as smart as him, which is mainly just a cover for his lack of real intelligence. He also accuses Kris of envying his friendship with Noelle, despite provoking their second battle over his own jealousy.
* PunnyName: In the Dark World, his weapon is a hal''berd'' he calls the "Holy Halbird".
* PyrrhicVictory: When Berdly and Noelle were kids, Berdly was able to beat Noelle and win a spelling bee--but he only won "by default", because Noelle froze and couldn't speak when asked to spell [[TraumaButton "December"]]. So while Berdly's victory gained him the adulation of his peers that he craved, he's constantly had to live with the fact that he didn't actually win the bee purely through skill.
* RecurringBoss: He's fought three times in Chapter 2. Once on a roller coaster, once on foot, and once as Queen's mind-controlled servant in her boss battle. In a Weird route, the third of these fights is skipped, as he's been frozen by Noelle's [=SnowGrave=] spell.
* RedOniBlueOni: Despite his blue feathers, Berdly is the arrogant Red oni while Noelle is the reserved Blue.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: In a normal run, upon meeting Kris and Noelle after the "trucies" event, he'll realize that Noelle is feeling forced into her situation with Queen. Noelle expresses relief, but then he says it must be from Kris forcing her to join their side and away from serving Queen with him. In the context of normal runs, he doesn't understand that it's ''Queen'' who's upsetting Noelle, and it spawns from Berdly's tendency to demean and blame others when things aren't going his way. Moreover, ironically, his accusation ''exactly'' describes what happens in the Weird Route.
* {{Scrub}}: InUniverse; he accuses Kris of cheating and compares the act to [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosMelee wavedashing]].
* ShooOutTheClowns: He's a rude and misguided goofball who provides a ton of comedy for Chapter 2, but his entire demeanor gets dropped as he changes into a more serious mood during the Weird Route. Goading Noelle into freezing him to death marks a successful Weird run and a much darker tone for the story.
* ShowsDamage: During his fight on the roller coaster, his cart begins to sputter smoke before it explodes. [[ClippedWingAngel He claims it's just a sign of him reaching a stronger form]].
* SlainInTheirSleep: In Chapter 2, if the player commits to a Weird run and proceeds to get Noelle to cast [=SnowGrave=], Berdly gets frozen solid by the spell, resulting in his Light World self dying while asleep.
* TheSmartGuy: The smartest student in class. That said, Berdly is only in this position because Noelle helps him study.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: As part of his overall nerdy ensemble, though Chapter 2 later shows that he's not actually as smart as he claims to be.
* SmugSmiler: He almost always has a self-satisfied smirk on his face. One of the more notable (and subtle) exceptions, is on the Weird Route when Kris and Noelle confront him for his boss fight: on any other route, he maintains his confident grin during the fight, but there, he looks downright unnerved instead.
* SmugSnake: His entire personality can be described as this. He's so smug that one of his face portraits goes so off model that it's basically a scribble. He's also self-admittedly reliant on Noelle's help to be as smart as he is.
* TheSocialDarwinist: Downplayed. While he isn't explicitly shown to be this, his idea of a "Smartopia" has the smart (the strong) rule over the others (the weak), giving some shades of this mindset.
* SpoofAesop: When Susie and Lancer try to explain to Berdly that they don't care whether he's smart or not, he concludes that he shall fight for the side... OF IGNORANCE! Susie wishes Ralsei was there to teach the moral lesson.
* StealthPun: A nerdy anthropomorphic blue jay, or in other words, a "birdbrain". As the term is synonymous with "idiot", it may seem [[IronicName unfitting for someone at the top of the class]], but Chapter 2 eventually shows he's not really as intelligent as he claims.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Despite having a similar appearance to the other playable characters, he has plenty of HP and has some impressive bullet patterns, in contrast to Susie in the DualBoss fight against her and Lancer, where she keeps her HP stat and only has a simple ax boomerang projectile attack.
* TakeOverTheWorld: His motivation throughout Chapter 2, which is a given as he's an ally of Queen.
* {{Thememobile}}: During the roller coaster segment of Chapter 2, Berdly rides a cart in the shape of a blue bird, sporting a goofy-looking mug, designed after his appearance.
* TheThingThatWouldNotLeave: By the time you meet Queen and Berdly together, she barely wishes to associate with him, and it quickly gets to the point where she starts ''teaming up with you'' just to avoid him. The only reason she tolerates him for so long is that she uses the threat of hurting Berdly to get Noelle to obey her.
* UncertainDoom: When returning to the Light World after having completed the Weird Route, Berdly doesn't wake up. Exactly why isn't made clear. The Snowgrave spell is explicitly described as "Fatal", but on the other hand, examining the graveyard in the Light World implies that monsters still turn to dust when they die, and Berdly's body hasn't. Either way, he isn't seen or mentioned again for the remainder of the chapter.
* UnwantedAssistance: Berdly tries to help Noelle in a lot of ways (Such as reading a novel aloud to the class to "spare her the humilation"), but often ends up making things more difficult for her. He explicitly admits it after Ralsei interrupts his attempt to make a new dark fountain in the normal ending.
-->'''Berdly:''' ''After everything, I just caused trouble for you again, Noelle.''
* VisualPun: His weapon of choice in the Dark World is a hal''berd'' with an eye on it, using the blade as its "beak".
* VoiceGrunting: Berdly has an obnoxious [[NerdyNasalness nasally laugh]], tying in with his smug, nerdy demeanor. The fact that he has a unique sound effect for his text [[{{Foreshadowing}} foreshadows]] that he isn't just a background character.
* WeCanRuleTogether: Of the CondescendingCompassion variety, suggesting Kris join him and Noelle in creating a "Smartopia" as a "slightly less distant Number 3" to scrub the royal toilet.
* WholeCostumeReference:
** His Dark World outfit gives him a striking resemblance to [[VideoGame/StarFox Falco Lombardi]], down to some kind of red eye glass over his left eye. It's almost certainly not coincidence[[note]]with Falco being one of the most competitively prominent characters in ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosMelee''[[/note]] that he also later complains about [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosMelee wavedashing]].
** There are also some references to [[Characters/DragonBallVegeta Vegeta]] thrown in as well, what with the shoulder pads and general armour shape; one of Berdly's battle actions is to crush his scouter in frustration.
* WrongGenreSavvy:
** Egotistical enough to fancy himself as the main hero of the adventure, who will grow to become "Super Lord Berdly" (much to Ralsei and Queen's confusion) and gets to choose Susie's "route" in "the VN of life". The former slowly diminishes after Queen's betrayal and his humiliation in the mansion, becoming genuinely heroic during the climactic battles against Queen.
** In his Weird Route fight, he assumes Kris going down will let Noelle switch sides and get away. By all rights, he's not wrong for working with the information he has, but because it's the SOUL inside Kris (aka the Player) commanding Noelle, she'll still hear "their voice" even when Kris is down, meaning she won't even try to escape should she get the chance to. The results are fatal for poor Berdly.
* {{Yandere}}: Berdly has shades of this in his in his second boss fight, where he lashes out at Kris for coming between him and "his" Noelle -- but it's ultimately subverted when he confesses to Noelle that he doesn't actually like her that way (in his own egotistical way of letting her down gently, because he [[EntertaininglyWrong thinks]] that ''[[LipstickLesbian she]]'' is crushing on ''him'') and he aids the heroes once he realizes he was duped.
* YourMindMakesItReal:
** While he assumes his experiences in the Dark World were a dream, beating either his Cyber City fight or the first Queen fight violently results in Berdly frying (and visibly zapping) his arm from pulling his wire off after the Queen fight, which results in said limb being paralyzed when he wakes up in the Light World.
** This extends all the way to his potential death at the hands of Noelle's [[KillItWithIce SnowGrave]] spell. If you check on him after returning to the Light World at the end of the chapter, the game describes him as "not awake". His body hasn't turned to dust, implying he may be alive, but ''something'' bad has clearly happened to him.

The younger sister of Catty. Pays more attention to her phone than to her surroundings.
----
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: In the epilogue of Chapter 2, her parents visit the diner she works at to cheer her on during her shift, as if it was a school sporting event. Apparently, this is a regular occurrence. She is... less than encouraged.
* BerserkButton: Apparently, messing with Jockington is this for Catti, as Susie discovered after she stole his hat at one point; and it seems it's something Catti ''still'' holds a grudge over for Susie.
* CatFolk: She's a cat monster, just like her big sister.
* DeadpanSnarker: Monotone, gloomy, and only looks up from her phone for a very short time to deliver quick remarks. She simply tells Kris "don't die" when they're asked to accompany Susie, and in the Chapter 2 Epilogue, she asks Kris if they can find an occult incantation spell to get her family to stop their loudly cheering in the diner.
* EmotionlessGirl: She's portrayed as one mainly, seemingly indifferent and bored by her surroundings. Jockington seems to be the only person she openly has actual attachment for, and even she doesn't know the reason why.
* FamilyThemeNaming: Catty and Catti.
* {{Goth}}: Her makeup and dour expression make her a dead ringer for someone going through a teenage Goth phase, and while part of it appears to be just being a BrattyTeenageDaughter, she does admit she wishes the rest of her family were either more normal, or "...more ''goth.''"
* GothGirlsKnowMagic: She previously studied magical/occult matters with Kris and Noelle, apparently separately, and says she taught Noelle “protection spells”. Monsters are inherently capable of doing magic, but Catti seems to be a particular enthusiast.
* HiddenDepths:
** In Chapter 2, her dialogue at the end mentions that she and Kris "studied [the] occult together", and once did the same for Noelle.
** Also in Chapter 2, it's revealed that despite their relationship appearing one-sided and her just using him, she actually cares deeply about Jockington, calling him a "pure" and "precious" boy with a "heart of gold". And Susie refuses to enter the diner while Catti's working because Catti ''hates'' her for stealing Jockington's cap one time.
* ALizardNamedLiz: A cat monster named Catti.
* PetTheDog: Despite being surly and distant, she seems to genuinely like Kris and is mentioned having let them study magic with her. Given Kris seems to genuinely hate being human, and humans can't use magic, this presumably meant a good deal to them.
* PhoneaholicTeenager: Catti is glued to her phone during class, only looking away to tell Kris she's already got a partner.
* TheQuietOne: She rarely says more than one or two words at a time.
* RightForTheWrongReasons: Catti mentions to Kris that she senses Noelle slipping into the darkness, and that Kris needs to do what they can to protect her since they too "walk among the dark". Of course, she's talking about Noelle harboring a crush on [[TheBully Susie]] and hopes Kris' experience with Susie should help with protecting her from getting bullied, but her description also fits the hidden Weird Route of Chapter 2 and what it entails for Noelle and Kris.
* ServiceSectorStereotypes: She's the DistaffCounterpart to Burgerpants, working the after school shift at QC's Diner as a waitress.
* TheStoic: Always wears the same neutral to bored expression on her face.
* TerseTalker: Usually only says one word, but is shown to be this when you can speak to her at length in Chapter 2. Where she speaks in short, almost analytical statements that are frequently only one or two words; and only very rarely breaks from it when she needs to be more descriptive with what she's trying to say.
-->'''Catti:''' ''(About her family)'' Dad. Mom. Sister. Ukelele. Football games. Soap operas. Yelling. Standing on tables. Afraid of vacuums. Stupid. Loud. Very loud. Kris...you and I. Studied occult. Together. ...Incantation for silence. ...Find it. Tell me.

* CoolShades: Wears a pair of those all day, every day.
* DumbJock: Catti gives him the apt description of, "curiosity high, intelligence low".
* LovableJock: He has a knack for athleticism, and he's a nice guy who has a lot of fans in the school. Even Catti likes him!
* MutuallyUnequalRelation: His "partnership" with Catti is really him getting used as a prop by her without even realizing it. It started with her using him as a hula-hoop ring in their first gym class. Somewhat Downplayed in that he doesn't seem to mind (and it is implied that he actually likes it), and she does legitimately enjoy their friendship.
* NiceGuy: He genuinely worries for Kris after they get stuck with Susie as a project partner and spends most of his screen time being a chill guy in general. His kindness is even Lampshaded by Catti who calls him a "pure" and "precious" boy with a "heart of gold".
* VerbalTic: His sentences, are full of unnecessary, commas. It even seeps into his writing, as demonstrated by the cross-country team poster.

* AmbiguousGender: Like in ''Undertale'', they lack any bodily features identifying them as male or female, and have never had their gender revealed in any dialogue.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: They still think of Susie as a bully through Chapter 2, and casually insult her while chatting with Kris, unaware of the newfound friendship between the two. Naturally, Kris takes offense to it.
* JerkassToOne: They can't stand Susie. While more than happy to hang out with Kris, they first request the human ditches the BullyTurnedBuddy without giving her a chance.
* NiceGuy: Feels genuinely sorry for Kris when they don't get a project partner and get assigned to TheBully Susie.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: A very subtle difference. In ''Undertale'', Monster Kid's horns were on the right, but ''Deltarune'''s Monster Kid has the horns on the left, just like Goner Kid.

Temmie.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: She refers to Kris as "Krisp."
* AuthorAvatar: As in ''Undertale'', she's based off of a sketch of Creator/TemmieChang, the game's main artist. This time, though, it also possesses her hat and hairdo, implying that this specific Temmie ''is''... well, Temmie.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Her speech patterns and behaviors are just as off-the-wall as ever. Her partner in class is an [[CompanionCube egg]], and she spends her study time looking at pictures of cute boys.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Instead of studying for "colleg", Kris finds her reading a comic with hot demon dudes in the post-game of Chapter 1. Going by her dialog, [[CloudCuckoolander she may even think that reading that comic is studying]].
* MindScrew: Temmie being partners with a boiled egg seems like random humor until you find in Chapter 2 that checking on the egg lets you keep track of how many eggs you got from the Man Behind The Tree, which raises a ton of questions...
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Similar to her ''Undertale'' shopkeeper counterpart. If you return to your class in the epilogue of Chapter 2 and talk to her, she'll yammer about going to college as usual in her signature ditzy speech, before abruptly switching to proper English at the very end.
-->"tem still study... study harb!!!"\
"tem get a SMART! go to COLLEG!! achieve DREAM!!"\
"then tem become... TEM BECOME....!!"\

* IfYouDieICallYourStuff: If spoken with two or more times before leaving the classroom with Susie in Chapter 1, he asks Kris if he can have Asriel's classical, jazz and religious ska CD's should they die.
* {{Jerkass}}: Calls Kris a "weenie" when daring Monster Kid to enter a mysterious bunker. The insult quickly earns him the [[BullyHunter ire of Susie]] who overheard the conversation.
* MissingMom: ''Undertale'' players may recall that Snowdrake's mother had an unfortunate fate. In ''Deltarune'', we can visit a snowflake-shaped tombstone with the inscription ''"Crystal; a snowy gemstone for a proud mother"''.

One of the teachers at Kris' school... at least, she tries to be.
----
* AdaptationalJobChange: In ''Undertale'', Alphys was a scientist. Now, she's a teacher.
* AdultsAreUseless: Despite Susie being late to class (numerous times, apparently), Alphys does nothing to address it (like talking to her parents about it) and there's no indication that she has. She does not seem to be aware that Susie is a troublemaker and a bully, but this is implied to be because Susie puts effort into hiding her activities as opposed to openly doing it.
* CoolTeacher: Tries to be. She tries so ''very hard'' to be. Unfortunately, she's so spineless that this translates to "everyone can walk all over her", meaning none of her students really seem to ''respect'' her.
* DeadpanSnarker: This incarnation of Alphys is much more likely to mutter snarky remarks under her breath, complete with a smirk and a flat stare.
-->'''Alphys:''' You were, um, s-sleeping all class... D-don't worry! I'm not mad! J... just concerned! ''[with a smirk]'' (Usually you only sleep through the start.)
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Undertale'', she was a reasonably plot-important character whose actions created Flowey. Here, she's just your teacher and has only a brief role in getting you to the Dark World.
* KindheartedCatLover: She leaves milk out in a saucer in the alleyway for a stray cat she never sees, because it makes her feel like she owns the cat and has something that loves her. Unfortunately there's no cat; it's ''Susie'' who's been drinking out of the bowl.
* NervousWreck: She has trouble speaking in front of the class and telling students what to do, which is one of the first big hints that ''Deltarune'' is not a direct sequel, since her character arc in ''Undertale'' partially revolved around gaining confidence. In Chapter 2, Alvin mentions that Alphys is directly following the footsteps of his award-winning author and historian father Gerson, who used to teach at the school, and that she may be really suffering under the pressure of doing such.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: If the anime review in the monster town is any indication, this Alphys '''likes''' ''Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2''. Even more OOC, this version of Alphys is more of a fan of western comics and animation, and ''Mew Mew 2'' was her introduction to the franchise. This likely has implications for Mad Dummy, as she ultimately inhabited Alphys' Mew Mew doll in the ''Undertale'' Switch port.
* {{Otaku}}: This version of Alphys is not quite as much of an anime-lover as the one in ''Undertale'', preferring western comics and animation, including superhero comics and this universe's version of ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons''. However, she does watch ''Mew Mew Kissy Cutie 2'' and enjoys it.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure:
** She tells Kris they're not in trouble for disappearing for the whole school day with Susie; she just wants to know where they went for their safety. Especially since Susie on the surface seems scary.
** When Kris falls asleep in class, Alphys isn't angry, just concerned that stress might be keeping them awake at night.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Although her role in the story is much less than in ''Undertale'', Alphys is the one who sends Susie and Kris to get the chalk from the school supply closet and inadvertently sending the two of them into the Dark World.

The owner of a local grocery store who just moved into town.
----
* AmbiguousSituation: The winking nod he makes when telling Kris he's never met them before, the lack of any changes to his character design, the fact that his theme from the original game returns in Chapter 2[[note]]one of only two ''Undertale'' tracks to be outright reused in Chapter 2 (and thusly ''Deltarune'' as a whole); the other is "Determination", which cameos for a brief FissionMailed gag[[/note]], and the original Sans' references to alternate universes and originally being from somewhere; all these seem to point towards ''something'' more going on with him than a simple job change like the other returning characters.
* BigBrotherInstinct: A possible explanation as to why he's reluctant to have Kris meet with his little brother, even though confessing the latter desperately needs friends. By [[{{VideoGame/Undertale}} greeting him as an old friend]] you've just [[MediumAwareness raised a huge red flag]] inside his head. He also has this response [[DevelopersForesight if he was never talked to in Chapter 1 but is still asked about his brother in Chapter 2]] as you shouldn't know he has a brother.
* BrilliantButLazy: Seemingly the case as it was back in ''Undertale''; the facade of his store is just the Grillby's restaurant from ''Undertale'' with all characters before the S scratched off and "ans" scrawled at the end, but the interior is an actual fully functional grocery store that he seemingly mans all by himself.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Undertale'', he was a major supporting character (and the absolutely ''brutal'' FinalBoss of the Genocide route), but here he's just a minor gag character...supposedly.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He might be a PungeonMaster, but he still finds Asgore's "eggs-husband" joke so unbelievably awkward that he turns his back on him and Toriel.
* IBangedYourMom: Subverted. He slyly tells Kris he is already familiar with Toriel as he "befriended" her last night, but what he really means is that he had a chat with her when she came to the store to buy chocolate.
* INeverToldYouMyName: One way to make Sans ''really'' suspicious is to ask him about his brother in Chapter 2 without having talked to him in the previous chapter, as he'll never get a chance to ask you to hang out with him.
-->'''Sans:''' brother...? what are you talking about? ... [[BlatantLies ...i don't have a brother.]] haha, just messin' with ya. i totally do. ...though, to be honest... i never mentioned him to you, did i? ...not gonna lie. a little weird you asked. [[LeaningOnTheFourthWall i'd never let my brother hang out with a stranger. especially not alone, or in my house.]] that's way too irresponsible. try to have some self-awareness, ok? [[ImmediateSelfContradiction meanwhile, i'll ask what his schedule is.]]
* LazyBum: Wouldn't be Sans if he wasn't.
-->'''Sans:''' oh, you've got something better to do? me too. anyway, i'll be standing here doing nothing.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: In Chapter 2 (which takes place a day after Chapter 1, but released 2 years 11 months later), if Sans is asked about his plan to introduce his brother to Kris from the previous chapter, he says that the plan will have to wait, "maybe a day, maybe another 2 years. who's keeping track at this point?"
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: {{Inverted}}; Sans is the only returning character whose appearance ''hasn't'' changed at all from ''Undertale'', having the exact same overworld and dialogue sprites and no outfit changes.
* OldFriend: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]; Sans [[UnreliableNarrator probably]] doesn't know Kris here. He has a very ''interesting'' reaction if Kris approaches him as this, though...
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: During Chapter 2, when Toriel visits his grocery and the two have a brief pun-fight, they are interrupted by Asgore. Sans turns his back on them, and when Toriel leaves, he is notably awkward when talking to Asgore, and does little to help him. The fact that the normally unflappable Sans is sufficiently put off during this scene speaks volumes about the tension around Toriel and Asgore's relationship.
* ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything: Played for Laughs. In Chapter 2, if you visit him in the store and ask him about his occupation, he will claim that he is a janitor while "filling in" the cashier role, and also admits that he is the only employee that works there, which would technically make him the manager. Him explaining this causes Susie much confusion and frustration.
-->'''Susie:''' Hey, you the boss around here?\
'''Sans:''' me? i'm just the janitor.\
'''Susie:''' Then where's the cashier?\
'''Sans:''' cashier? we don't have one.\
'''Susie:''' ''(visibly irritated)'' Then who do we buy stuff from!?\

'''Susie:''' [[StatingTheSimpleSolution Then why don't you hire someone else!?]]\
'''Sans:''' [[ChewbaccaDefense woah, you think i can afford that on a janitor's salary?]]
* PungeonMaster: Same as his old ''Undertale'' counterpart. In Chapter 2, Toriel visits his store and they exchange a volley of egg-related puns.
* {{Troll}}:
** Upon meeting Kris in an interaction at the end of Chapter 1, he'll tell Kris that he's already [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything "befriended" their mother Toriel the previous night...]] that is, he had a chat with her when she came to the store to buy chocolate kisses.
** At the end of their conversation, he gives Kris what's assumed to be his cell phone number, but if the player calls it, the number instead goes to the "[[SchmuckBait Hotline For Idiot Babies]]".
** In Chapter 2, the player can go into Sans' grocery store. If the player asks about buying something from him, he says that they need to get a basket from the stack in the corner to shop like anyone else... except the stack is so high there's physically no way for Kris to reach up and get one, preventing them from shopping. The narration calls this the "Throne of Evils".
** He owns the store, but he's just the janitor, really. There's no cashier to man the register, he's just filling in. Despite owning the store, he can't hire a cashier -- after all, he's working on a ''janitor's'' salary, how could he possibly afford that?

The local police chief.
----
* AbledInTheAdaptation: She has both eyes intact, as opposed to her ''Undertale'' counterpart who was missing one and had it covered by an eyepatch.
* BadCopIncompetentCop: The Bad Cop to Napstablook's Incompetent Cop; they appear to be the only two police officers in town. Napstablook hides away in the police station rather than deal with anyone who might actually need the police for anything, while Undyne reacts to even minor offenses with significant overkill, when she isn’t causing problems herself.
* DemotedToExtra: Goes from a significant boss fight in ''Undertale'' to a random NPC so minor that if you had never played the original game, you would dismiss her as a complete nobody. However, the fact that Toriel calls a certain "officer" right before the Dreemurrs' residence is swallowed by a Dark Fountain might be a hint that she'll play a role in Chapter 3.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: It's something of a FreezeFrameBonus in the intro that goes by too fast for most players to notice, but the fact that she's got two intact eyes is a ''huge'' initial tip-off that this isn't the ''Undertale'' cast you may have come to know.
* TheGuardsMustBeCrazy: In Chapter 2, she lets loose prisoners inside her precinct's jail, by accidentally sending the key flying right into the cell door's keyhole. Apparently this is not the first time she let prisoners loose like this.
* HotBlooded: She wouldn't be Undyne otherwise. Even her police tape reads "NGAAAAAAH!"
* PoliceAreUseless: Though she argues that it's because nothing exciting ever happens in the town for her to address.
** Instead of directing traffic flow, she'll let cars go on the wrong side of the street and will stand in the middle of traffic yelling at cars to get out of her way. In Chapter 2, we see that her other idea of directing traffic is bench-pressing cars in the middle of the road.
** If Kris tries to tell her about the Dark World in the school, she will be confused, assume you have a vivid imagination, and say that since there are no laws against any "Dark World" anyway, it's the school board's problem, not the police's.
** Kris again tries to warn her about the Dark World in Chapter 2. She laughs so violently at this "joke" that she shatters her desk, and sends a key flying which lands perfectly in the lock of a nearby holding cell, [[DisasterDominoes allowing every single criminal locked inside to run free into the streets.]]
* SmallTownBoredom: She's bored because nothing exciting ever happens in the town for her to take care of.
* YouAreInCommandNow: It is all but outright said that the main reason she got the job as the local Chief of Police, despite being a ill-tempered rookie, was because Asgore was removed from the post due to some unspecified incident and the only other candidate for filling in the job was Napstablook (whether Napstablook was even asked before Undyne was offered the job is ambiguous, but they likely wouldn't have accepted it either way).

Also note that Burgerpants originally got his nickname from an incident involving [[ComedicUnderwearExposure his pants falling down]], meaning Pizzapants' nickname may have come from a similar accident.
* CasanovaWannabe: Cannot even reach this point. He immediately tells you the tale he had about picking up chicks with Asriel is completely false, and that the only female contact he had then was Undyne giving him a ticket.
* CoolBigBro: Downplayed, but some of his dialogue vaguely implies he had moments where he tried to be one toward Kris, if only to try to fill the void in Kris' life left by Asriel's absence.
* CoolKidAndLoserFriendship: He was close friends with Asriel, despite their vast difference in social standing.
* FanOfTheUnderdog: Downplayed; while most people of Hometown view Kris as a CreepyChild, they mostly remain polite to Kris and don't hold their previous hijinks against them. Pizzapants, in contrast, has no problems with Kris whatsoever and it's clear he genuinely likes Kris.
* GirlfriendInCanada: In the second chapter, he's apparently gotten a girlfriend... except he has no idea what she even looks like because they've only been communicating through texts. She allegedly sent him a photo of herself in a pizza bikini, but it's so zoomed in and pixelated it just looks like a vague pizza-like blob. When examining the magazines in Sans' store, Kris will find an issue with a suspiciously similar description...
* {{Gonk}}: He continues to make really absurd faces, some of them debatably worse than in ''Undertale''.
* GoofySuit: One of his many hated duties at the pizzeria is to stand outside in one of these.
* GrammarCorrectionGag: One of the little things that upset him about his work is the E in "PEZZA", which he eagerly mocks. Worse, the owner even tells him off for slacking with "there's no I in PEZZA", which he remembers with seething hate.
* HappinessIsMandatory: He is as much a victim of this under Ice-E's as he was under Mettaton. Probably even worse than under Mettaton, as he wasn't required to wear a costume to work.
* HiddenDepths:
** This version of him is good friends with Asriel, even calling him by an affectionate nickname. And he apparently knows Kris fairly well too, to the point of being one of the few in town that doesn't imply they're weird and calling them "little buddy". He's actually pretty happy to see them rather than an actual customer.
** Burgerpants in ''Undertale'' had [[JadedWashout completely given up on making anything of himself]] other than a burger-jockey in a dead-end job. Pizzapants seems to still hold on to some hope of making something of his life, as he mentions saving up to get himself into college.
* InSpiteOfANail: He's still stuck working in fast food service (though for a pizza place this time), and still hating it about as much.
* LargeHam: Still making goofy expressions while shouting about how he hates his job.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Much like his ''Undertale'' counterpart, Burgerpants, he was given a nickname by Bratty and his real name remains unknown.
* OnlySaneMan: Every one of Ice-E's employees is some degree of loony, except for Pizzapants. And he's more than content to just let the rest of them be because he's burnt out and doesn't care. That said, he does angrily object to ''one'' of Ice-E's policies instead of treating it with apathy like all the other ones.
-->'''Pizzapants:''' I can't slack off for SECONDS without hearing... "Be a team player, there's no I in PEZZA!" ''YES THERE IS. YOU JUST TOOK IT OUT.''
* TheResenter: He's quietly jealous that Asriel managed to get out of town and make something of himself at university, and resolves to do the same when, or even if, he can. He doesn't ''hate'' Asriel, but he's not too happy with the situation.

[[folder:Sans' Brother]]
-->''(No response... but the distant trousle of bones.)''

Sans' little brother who just moved into town alongside him. In ''Undertale'', he's known as Papyrus.
----
* AllThereInTheManual: Sans doesn't mention his brother's name, but we can safely presume it is still Papyrus for two reasons:
** During the character creation sequence, "Papyrus" is the only name from ''Undertale'' that, despite being completely absent from the game proper, still elicits the "interesting coincidence" response given for hometown residents.
** With the release of Chapter 2, the game's Steam page description now mentions Papyrus by name and that he's busy, the latter of which is also said by Sans about his little brother within Chapter 2 itself.
* BigLittleBrother: Papyrus was twice his brother's height in ''Undertale'', but Sans only tells us of a little brother in this game.
* TheGhost: You don't get to directly encounter him in Chapter 1 or 2. Aside from Sans mentioning him, the closest you get to interacting with him is going up to his house's front door, where you can hear "the distant trousle of bones," a nod to Papyrus' theme from ''Undertale'', "Bonetrousle". The Steam page description claims that he's busy.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Sans certainly thinks he needs one, and asks you to help with that.
* ShrinkingViolet: Depicted here as in desperate need of friends and so shy that knocking on the door in Chapter 2 causes him to run away from the door, contrasting his exuberantly extroverted ''Undertale'' counterpart.

A ghost who mans the local police station. For whatever reason, they accidentally ended up becoming part of the police force, and they can't quit because their cousins are relying on them.
----
* AllLowercaseLetters: Like their ''Undertale'' counterpart, Napstablook writes entirely like this.
* BadCopIncompetentCop: The Incompetent Cop to Undyne's Bad Cop; they appear to be the only two police officers in town. Napstablook hides away in the police station rather than deal with anyone who might actually need the police for anything, while Undyne reacts to even minor offenses with significant overkill.
* HiddenDepths: In addition to carrying over their ''Undertale'' counterpart's penchant for music, they're also a brilliant writer, with their diary (identifiable as theirs by the writing style) becoming critically acclaimed after they mistakenly donated it to the Librarby.
* PoliceAreUseless: While Undyne is out on the beat overreacting to minor incidents, back at HQ Napstablook ''under''reacts, closing the blinds to the station when it looks like someone wants in. When Undyne accidentally causes a jailbreak in Chapter 2, Napstablook responds by putting on some music and chilling out, claiming the song doubles as a "jailbreak alarm". It's noted that they, a ''floating'' ghost, once somehow got stuck in a tree coming to rescue Catti's family from out of it.
* ShrinkingViolet: Just like in ''Undertale'', they're demure to the point of invisibility.
* UnseenNoMore: In Chapter 1, they're not seen in person, but their actions (closing the blinds without a word and just hoping Kris goes away) and the flavor text of "aren't really feeling it right now" strongly hint about their identity. In the epilogue of Chapter 2, the police station can be entered, allowing Napstablook to be seen in person.

[[folder:A Nobody]]
!!"A nobody"
-->''My apologies, beautiful. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a nobody.''

A yet-unnamed ghost who lives with Napstablook, but never leaves their house. In ''Undertale'', they're known as Mettaton.
----
* BeautifulSingingVoice: Implied. One of the [=NPCs=] outside their house comments on how they sometimes hear wonderful singing coming from inside.
* ContinuityNod: In Cyber City, you can find one of the display dummies wearing a very similar dress to what Mettaton themselves wore during the opera sequence in ''Undertale''.
* {{Hikikomori}}: Doesn't leave the house out of insecurity, and assumes all callers are for their cousin. Talking to them in Chapter 2 indicates they spend most of the time on the internet, and are implied to do little else otherwise.
* NoNameGiven: They only describe themself as "a nobody".
* {{Sidequest}}: If you talk to them in Chapter 2, they'll ask you to bring them entertainment the next day in yellow letters.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: It's implied that the "nobody" drew up a design for their dream body, which ended up forgotten in the computer lab and appeared in the Dark World. This body is all but said to be Mettaton NEO, and it's the object of Spamton's desires. On the normal route, Spamton will try to murder Kris for their SOUL after getting NEO, while on the Weird route, he'll actively encourage Noelle's rampage and unlock her strongest attack, exploiting the chaos to conquer Queen's mansion and take NEO for himself. Either way, this "nobody" can cause a whole ''slew'' of problems without ever knowing about it.
* VerbalTic: Recognized by their use of the word "darling", like Mettaton did in ''Undertale''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mad Housemate]]
-->''What. What? WHAT?! If you're looking for Blooky, they aren't here!!''
Another ghost who lives with Napstablook and "nobody". In ''Undertale'', they're known as Mad Dummy/Mad Mew Mew.
----

* ImmediateSelfContradiction: If you try and talk to them, they'll angrily state they don't recognize such a pathetic face, right before asking Kris to say hi to their dad for them.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While they're just as belligerent as ever towards Kris, They seem to harbor a soft spot for Asgore and even tells Kris to say hi for them.
* NoNameGiven: As of Chapter 2, nobody calls them by any name.
* VerbalTic: Recognized by their tendency to repeat themselves three times, each getting progressively louder, just like their ''Undertale'' counterpart (both as Mad Dummy and Mad Mew Mew).

* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: In ''Undertale'', Catty and Bratty were best friends and were never seen apart. Here, they dislike each other and each thinks the other is trying to sabotage her life.
* CoolBigSis: She sees herself as one toward Catti, though she admits Catti thinks she's embarrassing.
* HonoraryAunt: She fancies herself as being one toward Kris. She absolutely adores Kris and encourages them to talk to her about anything.
* ALizardNamedLiz: A cat monster named Catty.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: Despite being frenemies, she and Bratty coincidentally have the same nickname for Kris.
* WeMeetAgain: How she views her "altercations" with Bratty. Each of them thinks the other is deliberately showing up to one-up and sabotage her life, instead of both just having common interests. Even having an impromptu ukulele jam-session on the beach together isn't enough to dispel this perception.

* KickTheDog: In the chapter 2 epilogue it's heavily implied that she's the one behind Pizzapants' GirlfriendInCanada. She brings it up completely unprompted if interacted with and seems pretty amused the whole time she talks about it, barely keeping from breaking into laughter.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: Despite being frenemies, she and Catty coincidentally have the same nickname for Kris.
* WeMeetAgain: How she views her "altercations" with Catty. Each of them thinks the other is deliberately showing up to one-up and sabotage her life, instead of both just having common interests. 862The local pastor. He's the son of the late Gerson Boom.
----
* DueToTheDead: He's paying respects to his late father in the graveyard.
* GoodShepherd: A kindly pastor who implores Kris to talk if they have something on their mind.
* VagueAge: His somewhat formal style of speech and his father having died (of old age, presumably) implies that Alvin may be middle-aged. But there's a drawing by him in the unused classroom that could suggest his childhood wasn't that long ago...unless said drawing has been there for a ''really'' long time. However, given that his father's Undertale counterpart is said to have taken part in the war thousands of years before the events of the game, Alvin could be far older than the other residents of Hometown.

-->-- '''Pizzapants'''
The other workers at Ice-E's P"E"ZZA alongside Pizzapants. They're a bit weird, and consist of Blue Ears, The Warrior, and the Purple Guy.
----
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: All of them (besides Pizzapants) are a bit unhinged to say the least. The Warrior in particular keeps constantly shouting war chants at work, reducing the restaurant's success as a result.
* NoIndoorVoice: The Warrior alongside the Purple Guy scream everything that they say.
* ObliquelyObfuscatedOccupation: Pizzapants is completely unsure what Purple Guy's job is, if he even ''works'' at Ice-E's P"E"ZZA to begin with, and in Chapter 2 he's nowhere to be seen near the pizza shop, instead [[NewJobAsThePlotDemands now being in Hometown's City Hall]], where the workers there are ''equally'' as confused as to what he's doing there.
* ThroughTheEyesOfMadness: The Warrior seems to see the world itself as an epic fantasy game, as they refer to hospital staff as "white wizards" and the hospital room they're being treated in as a "healing chamber".

A lonely giant monster living at the bottom of the lake east of Hometown.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: In Chapter 1, you can choose to introduce Kris with their name or "Hippopotamus". Onion will try to remember it, only to forget later in the conversation and call you "Krismas" or "Hyper Potato Mask" instead. In Chapter 2, they'll call you the opposite of what you introduce yourself as in the previous chapter (calling you "Hyper-Potato-Mouse" if you introduce yourself as Kris in the previous chapter, and vice versa).
* FriendlessBackground: They don't have any friends at all, and when encountered, they'll ask Kris to be their OnlyFriend. The only person they seem to remember in the town is Asriel, who would throw corn flakes into the lake for them to feed.
* HiddenDepths: If you befriend them in Chapter 1, they'll tell you a secret in Chapter 2: that they sometimes hear a song from the bottom of the lake they reside in. They also seem to remember hearing the song before, coming from the sea, and that they're planning to investigate. It's worth mentioning that the River Person from ''Undertale'' also ponders about an old song coming from the sea.
* MythologyGag: If you name them "Asriel II", they'll say that the name feels like a memory. The ''Undertale'' soundtrack has a song titled "Memory", which (along with its leitmotif) is associated with Asriel.
* NameAmnesia: No one ever talks to them, to the point where they forgot their own name. They later ask Kris to give them a name (a choice between Onion, Beauty, or Asriel II), which they'll promptly butcher themself a few sentences in (becoming Umyum, Bootis, or Cereal).

----
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Implied to have been the late Muttler, who has a grave in the graveyard and is also implied to have been one of the relatives from ''Undertale'' who became part of Endogeny.
* ShoutOut: To the pair of bandits in ''Film/HomeAlone'', the Wet Bandits. Not only are their names similar, but their backstory is flat-out the plot to ''Home Alone'', having attempted to rob a house during the holidays only to be attacked by a menace in the shadows (the equivalent of Kevin [=McCallister=]) and arrested.

* AmbiguousGender: There is nothing that indicates their gender.
* NoNameGiven: They don't have a name.
* NPCRoadblock: Talk to them and they'll say that they love the books upstairs. In Chapter 1, they're blocking the stairs, so you can't go upstairs. In Chapter 2, you can go upstairs but the monster still blocks off the left half of the room.
* PaletteSwap: Though this NonPlayerCharacter is extremely unimportant (as far as we know of at least), the fact that they're the colored version of the only Gaster follower who lacked one in ''Undertale'' causes them to stick out like a sore thumb.
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: The game files refer to them as "normalnpc".
* WelcomeToCorneria: All they do is say that they like reading the books upstairs even when both of you are ''already'' upstairs, giving the impression there's more to the library than it seems once one considers the character's (lack of an) ''Undertale'' counterpart.

----
* CompositeCharacter: Being a researcher who was replaced by Alphys after his death draws parallels between Gerson and Dr. Gaster, who in ''Undertale'' was the royal scientist replaced by her after he got shattered.
* FamedInStory: He's recognized far and wide as for his work as a historian and fantasy writer according to Father Alvin.
* LovedByAll: He's famous for his work as a historian and fantasy writer, recognized far and wide according to Father Alvin, and continued receiving condolences by letter long after his passing.
* PosthumousCharacter: Alvin is seen visiting Gerson's grave in Chapter 2, and can tell what kind of man he was if asked.
