[[SinsOfOurFathers The kids are indoctrinated to believe they must atone for their ancestors' sins]] by leading a mission into the Walls to destroy the population there. On a personal level, several are also seeking to gain [[spoiler:honorary citizenship status with Marley so their families can live lives outside the ghettoes]].
11	** While all the Titan Shifters who infiltrated the walls have issues developing from how long they spent among the inhabitants, the Armored Titan, [[spoiler:Reiner Braun]], has it the worst. He was a tried and true patriot who wanted [[spoiler:to earn citizenship]] so he and his mother could be reunited with his long lost father. He endures a TraumaCongaLine in which [[spoiler:his Marleyan father wants nothing to do with his mixed-blood son, he learns he wasn't the originally intended recipient of the Armored Titan, and the one who caused it to be him gets eaten before he can explain anything else]]. He's driven to continue the mission, no matter what, by a mix of patriotism, family, and a desire to not see the effort thus far go to waste, and it breaks him. In adulthood, when he's confronted by someone who has every reason to hate him, the other party explains that he's actually come to understand what drove him, that he was, in his own way, trying to save humanity.
12	** After the Armored Titan returns home, the story focuses on him at home and we see as he has to watch a whole new generation of children being trained to become inheritors to the Titans, including his own when [[spoiler:his lifespan, shortened drastically by taking on a Titan power, reaches its end]]. The children are clearly every bit as indoctrinated as the generation before them was, as they see no problem with being utilized as ChildSoldiers even without having Titan powers.
13	* ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'' owns three examples:
14	** Rosine is a female Apostle who has taken the form of a pretty moth-fairy. However, she far from being benevolent, and commands an army of [[TheFairFolk evil demonic sprites formed from kidnapped children]]. However, Rosine is [[ObliviouslyEvil completely unaware of the sheer scope of her awful actions]]. Before she became an Apostle, she was born into an abusive household, and this eventually led her to despair, coming to the belief that HumansAreTheRealMonsters.
15	** The Egg of The Perfect World was once a deformed outcast of society with no one who loved or cared for him. His life was a living hell, as everyone around him considered him a freak. He was accidentally buried alive when the people began to use his hiding place as a burial pit. Even though he had no one to sacrifice, he was transformed into an Apostle, doubling as his own sacrifice and a Behelit for an Incarnation ceremony. He would then subtly manipulate events around the Tower of Conviction, sacrificing the lives of thousands in the hope of ushering a new world.
16	** Sonia, a cute blonde teenage girl who is nothing short of the BigBad's PR and messenger.
17	** Princess Charlotte is about as anti as you can get, being a PrincessClassic and TheIngenue. Unfortunately, she's also a LivingMacguffin, being Griffith's MealTicket and eventual DarkMistress. Through almost no fault of her own (aside from being a HorribleJudgeOfCharacter), Charlotte nevertheless remains key to Griffith's plans and will likely only serve to cause additional problems.
18	* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'':
19	** Starrk is [[BrilliantButLazy Captain Kyoraku Shunsui's]] barely EvilCounterpart. His list of evil acts include snatching Orihime away from Ichigo and returning her to Las Noches' fifth tower, and lazily fighting against Kyoraku (and Ukitake, Love and Rose). He never actually hurts Orihime and flat-out says that he's only doing this because Aizen ordered him to, and offered to pretend-fight Kyoraku because he's just that damn lazy. The only reason this guy is evil is because he's an arrancar who works for Aizen.
20	*** His status as an AntiVillain is finally driven home when his motivation is revealed. He fights for [[BigBad Aizen]] out of gratitude to him for [[IJustWantToHaveFriends ending his loneliness]], but even then, doesn't ever want to fight seriously. Then, when he finally does decide to get serious, his motivation for doing so is Lilynette pointing out that fighting for real is the only possible way to stop more of his TrueCompanions from dying.
21	** Also from the [[QuirkyMinibossSquad Espada,]] Tier Harribel. Cool, calm, and collected, and the only reason she's fighting is loyalty to Aizen. The only times she shows any emotion is when her subordinates get incinerated by the Commander-General and when Aizen betrays her.
22	** Ulquiorra is perfectly capable of cruelty and ruthlessness if Aizen's orders require such things, and he disparages the very existence of intangible things such as emotion and love as foolish and infantile. On the other hand, he has a low opinion of the outlandish brutality of most of his fellow Espada - calling Nnoitra "repulsive scum" to his face for suggesting that Ulquiorra molest Orihime and mercilessly bringing a raging Yammy to heel earlier on - and is relatively forgiving to his enemies, at one point acknowledging Orihime's bravery in the face of her situation and later giving Ichigo multiple chances to give up and turn back across their two duels.
23	** From the Shinigami, there's Tousen, who [[spoiler:left Soul Society because of a KarmaHoudini towards a murder committed there, and [[TheStarscream Gin]], whose MoralityPet is Rangiku.]]
24	** From the Bount {{Filler}} arc, Koga Go only sticks with the Bounts because of his loyalty to Kariya, loyalty that ends up backfiring on him when Kariya turns on him. And Maki Ichinose only wants to avenge his former captain, who was killed, and eventually undergoes a bit of a HeelFaceTurn.
25	* In ''Manga/BlueSeed'', nature God, Lord Susano-oh, is immediately described as the BigBad that wants to destroy the human race, so that his plants the Aragami can rule and dominate. [[spoiler:Turns out that's not true at all. Susano-oh doesn't hate nor want to destroy the human race. He doesn't even control the Aragami. They're controlled the by series' true BigBad, Murakumo. He just wants to return Earth to its rich natural origins, before the dangers of technology and industry destroy the planet for good. Which is why Kaede agrees to side with him and help him achieve his goals.]]
26	* ''Manga/ABridesStory'': Azel, Baimat, and Joruk (Amir’s elder brother and cousins) strongly disapprove of her father’s order to take her back and marry her to an abusive and wealthy man, but [[MyMasterRightOrWrong very reluctantly follow orders anyway,]] since they’re the orders of their clan’s Chief, Belqat, and [[DeliberateValuesDissonance no one should ever disobey their father.]] All three of them try to dissuade the elder members of their clan, especially the Chief, to no avail. When [[spoiler:Belquat leads a raid on Karluk’s town]], the three set up a counter-plan in advance, [[spoiler:sending Joruk to alert Amir under the guise of trying to convince her one last time, actively minimizing casualties, and striking back at the Badan]]. After [[spoiler:Belqat dies and Azel becomes the chief]], they lead the clan in a more intelligent and sensible direction, giving the entire clan a HeelFaceTurn.
27	* ''Manga/BusoRenkin'': The [[OurHomunculiAreDifferent hawk-homunculus]] Washio is a NobleDemon who acts as TheDragon for his saviour and creator, the Papillon Masked Creator Koushaku Chouno, during the first arc of the series. While somewhat arrogant, Washio only fights against the protagonists to protect his master and would have let them walk away from their battle if they had sworn to leave Chouno alone. Even after his defeat, Washio still only cares about protecting the Papillon Masked Creator and dies happy after [[StockShonenHero Kazuki]] says that he has no intention of killing Chouno.
28	* Most villains in ''Manga/CaseClosed'' are {{Sympathetic Murderer}}s, but the case of the person born Seiji Asou is worth some special mention. After narrowly escaping being killed with his family because he was hospitalized in Tokyo, he was adopted by his father's friend, Asai, and [[spoiler:grew up into a [[HospitalHottie handsome]], [[DudeLooksLikeALady if girly looking]], [[HospitalHottie doctor]]. He went back to this fishing island as a...''female'' doctor, assuming the feminine name of [[AlternateCharacterReading Narumi]], to investigate and take {{revenge}}. [[MagnificentBastard In 2 years, he killed nearly every one of his targets and nobody even suspected]]. He was caught by Conan -- and despite Conan's pleas for him to live, he chose to [[FaceDeathWithDignity set himself alight with his pianist father's piano]].]]
29	* Mikuni of ''Anime/CControl'' is a strong and wealthy man who felt that he could used the midas money to help Japan by buying all of Japan's debt. He was kind to Kimiminaro and wanted to mentor him. He has a different philosophy to money than Kiminaro. However, [[spoiler: he may have made things worse by underestimating the Financial District's powers and made things worse in Japan.]]
30	* ''Manga/CellsAtWorkBacteria'': The leader of the ''C. perfinigens'' bacteria repeatedly flirts with this territory, as he expresses concern over his human host's unbalanced diet (even though it's beneficial to his species) and even other bacteria whose best interests aren't in line with his, like the vitamin-producing ''E. coli''.
31	* DarkActionGirl [[DragonLady Quanxi]] [[spoiler:AKA Crossbow Woman]] from ''Manga/ChainsawMan'' was [[WorldsBestWarrior a veteran Devil Hunter]] who left the [[GovernmentAgencyOfFiction Public Safety Devil Hunters Bureau]] and went rogue, becoming a PunchClockVillain mercenary. She was TheHedonist who lived for comfort & pleasure, but still cared for the people close to her like [[ButchLesbian her girlfriends]] and her former protégé [[CoolOldGuy Kishibe]]. [[spoiler:After she's brought BackFromTheDead by [[TheAntichrist Makima]]'s defeat, she has a HeelFaceTurn and rejoins Public Safety.]]

33	** [[Characters/CodeGeassSuzakuKururugi Suzaku Kururugi]]. Despite working for TheEmpire, he is, in some ways, more 'heroic' than the show's protagonist.
34	** In fact, nearly all of the show's "villains" fit this trope. The aforementioned Suzaku is actively working to reform [[TheEmpire Brittania]] from the inside (or so he claimed early on, only for it to be revealed as a cover for a death wish) during the first season (in the second, he simply chose to work for Britannia so he could gain Area 11 as his own territory), most of the Knights of the Round are [[AffablyEvil affable]] [[PunchClockVillain Punchclock Villains]], Gottwald's sympathetic backstory mostly makes up for his misdeeds in the service of the empire [[spoiler:(which are rendered moot after his HeelFaceTurn)]], the only completely evil villains were PsychoForHire Luciano Bradley, Emperor Charles zi Britannia, and V.V.
35	*** Even Charles and V.V. [[spoiler: and Marianne]] could be considered anti-villain as all they wanted was [[spoiler: to kill God to create a world without lies and equal. This desire was born from being raised in the BigScrewedUpFamily that is the Britannian Royal family where their mother was killed in front of them when they were no more than 10 years old and only because they were appointed heirs to the empire.]]
36	*** Schneizel's kind of an odd case, perhaps showing the difference between being AffablyEvil and an AntiVillain. He's pretty nice for a villain and Cornelia's comment when [[spoiler: he spares her life]] could be read as WordOfGod calling him an anti-villain, but ''his'' UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans plan is certainly more evil and selfish than Lelouch's is and isn't much better than his father's plan.
37	*** Schneizel is perfectly willing to [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness throw his minions away]], especially during the Damocles arc, when he attempts to abandon Nunnally and the entire personnel of the rigged-to-explode station to save his own skin. Lelouch, in contrast, tries to make people follow him out of their own free will, even former enemies who regularly battled against him before.
38	*** Except when he doesn't. He doesn't seem to have that much of a problem tampering with people's wills to get what he wants.
39	*** Well, he outright refused, by WordOfGod, to use his Geass to make people his slaves until crossing the DespairEventHorizon...
40	* Mello from ''Manga/DeathNote'' puts aside his rivalry with Near to play a pivotal role in ending the greatest ever reign of terror by a mass murderer playing God. It just so happens that Mello plays this role by kidnapping, shooting people down (or having others do it for him), and blowing some stuff up, all while working with the Mafia. But it's for the greater good, really! ...And, you know, that raging inferiority complex.
41	* Enpi-chan in the re-make of ''Manga/DororonEnmaKun'' is the older sister of the main character, and is the one who helped bring demons into the human world to cause mischief. But she's only doing so with the vague goal of making the world a more fun and sexy place [[spoiler: and was made to think that this was the way to do it indirectly by Heaven]], and more often than not, ends up in an EnemyMine situation with the heroes when her minions go against that goal.
42	* ''Franchise/DragonBall'':
43	** Fat Majin Buu. In the Buu Saga of ''Anime/DragonBallZ'', he kills people and destroys cities, but only because he has a childlike mind and doesn't really comprehend that it's wrong since that's all his creators ever taught him to do. When he eventually makes a friend who explains to him that it's bad, he stops.
44	** Androids #17 and #18 from the main timeline of are not only stronger than their other counterparts from the {{Alternate Timeline}}s, they are also not nearly as malicious as them. The only reason why they chase Goku is curiosity more than anything else and they don't actually try to kill the Z-Fighters, they even spare their lives. It's also shown (in the manga and in filler scenes) that they don't seriously harm other civilians, though in the anime 17# does seemingly kill some rowdy bikers, who to be fair were harassing them.
45	** Android #16 even more so. The only evil thing about him is his programmed goal of killing Goku. Besides this, #16 is a FriendToAllLivingThings, he doesn't like fighting, and he fights only Cell during his entire life because Cell is a threat to his friends and to the nature.
46	** Whis from ''Anime/DragonBallZBattleOfGods'' and ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'' is a really decent guy and probably would be a heroic character if he didn't happen to be a BattleButler [[spoiler:and all-powerful mentor]] for a {{Jerkass God}}. Later on when the Z-Fighters have earned Beerus' respect, Whis becomes something of a BigGood, using his magic powers to help the good guys [[spoiler:like reversing time to stop Frieza's RageQuit from destroying the Earth in ''Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF''.]]
47	** Broly (unlike his [[Anime/DragonBallZBrolyTheLegendarySuperSaiyan original non-canon incarnation]]) is this in ''Anime/DragonBallSuperBroly''. Although indisputably the main antagonist of the film, he’s only fighting Goku and Vegeta out of deeply loyal obligation to his abusive father Paragus who’s been raising him as a weapon of revenge against Vegeta’s family since he was a child. Making matters worse he’s also TheBerserker who becomes increasingly unhinged the more powerful and angry he gets, so even by the time Goku tries deescalating by immobilising Broly with God ki saying he can tell Broly isn’t evil like the other villains he’s faced, it’s too late as Broly breaks free and keeps trying smash Goku to pieces. [[spoiler:Then Frieza (who’ll do anything to ensure Goku’s death) kills Paragus and makes it look like Goku did it, causing Broly to go OneWingedAngel in despair which in turn forces Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Gogeta to stop him destroying the planet. Thankfully Cheelai who befriended Broly, makes Shenron wish him away to Vampa and Goku himself goes to Vampa to make amends with his fellow Saiyan.]]
48	** Dr. Hedo (Gero’s grandson), Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 are this in ''Anime/DragonBallSuperSuperHero''. Hedo is pretty ObliviouslyEvil as he genuinely believes he is a ScienceHero despite many of his creations being sinister and destructive and much like Gohan is an avid fan of cool posing superheroes but is unfortunately gaslight by the new Red Ribbon Army leader Magenta into thinking the Z-Fighters are evil alien monsters working for “MadScientist” Bulma. He is genuinely appalled at Magenta’s willingness to kidnap and hurt little Pan an innocent girl and he eventually pulls a HeelFaceTurn. Hedo’s creations Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 likewise believe they’re on the side of good with Gamma 2 being a SmugSuper at worst and it’s a shock for them when Piccolo and co show them that they are really working for tyrants. [[spoiler:They join the heroes in fighting Cell Max in the climax with Gamma 2 pulling a HeroicSacrifice.]]
49	* Lucy from ''Manga/ElfenLied''. [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds A mass murdering lunatic that ended up like that due to the years of endless torment finally made her snap]]. (Though she may also have a genetic inborn drive to KillAllHumans due to her status as a [[{{Mutants}} Diclonius]]).
50	* In ''Anime/EurekaSeven'', Dominic hardly qualifies as a real villain at all straight from the start. He sides against Gekkostate [[spoiler: for most of the series]], but he's generally a fairly nice and harmless guy. Similarly, [[spoiler: Ray and Charles Beams]] are some of the nicest, most loving people Renton meets in the entire series. Unfortunately, their connections to the military [[spoiler: along with a [[ItsPersonal personal grudge]] against Eureka]] make them enemies of the protagonists. [[spoiler: Anemone]] also moves toward being an AntiVillain as the series goes on and we discover more of her true personality and tragic past.

56	* ''Manga/FrierenBeyondJourneysEnd'': The Great Demon King that Frieren and the Hero Party defeated in the backstory was, according to Frieren, not truly malicious or looking to cause suffering ForTheEvulz the way every other demon encountered by them has. He actually wanted to ''understand'' humans, and find a way for them and demons to coexist peacefully. Unfortunately, the BlueAndOrangeMorality of demonkind means that the only way he knows to do this is by killing humans and forcing them to kill each other, then observing their emotions in response. It's entirely possible that, given enough time (and bodies) he really would have reached a point where HumanityEnsues. But by that point, he would've driven humanity to extinction with his "expirements."
57	* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'':
58	** Greed and his chimera henchmen. [[spoiler: He even eventually bleeds into AntiHero later on]].
59	** Scar also fills this role to those who don't believe him an AntiHero. Most of the people Scar kills are shown to be unrepentant war criminals or {{Mook}}s belonging to the government, which had them commit genocide alongside the war criminals, and a pair killed during a major BSOD during the genocidal war. Even Scar himself admits that he doesn't deserve redemption.
60	** ''[[Manga/FullmetalAlchemist Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood]]'' gives us Isaac the Ice Alchemist. He goes out trying to kill King Bradley due to his disgust over the Ishvalan Massacre. And considering what's revealed later in the series, if he had shown up later on, he probably would've been allied with the heroes.
61	** Among the Homunculi, Gluttony and the aforementioned Greed are the best examples, while Sloth's a pretty good example of a PunchClockVillain. Although the other four are undeniably cruel, all of them have ''some'' sympathetic quality or another: [[spoiler:Bradley is Wrath in this one and despite still being a bastard, is less sadistic and almost comes to admire his human adversaries; [[CombatSadomasochist Lust]] seems to have genuine care for Gluttony and Envy, plus loyalty to [[BigBad Father]]. Envy & Pride, meanwhile, have pitiful traits despite their sociopathy - the former actually ''[[ShapedLikeItself envies humans]]'' for all their good qualities and because it can't emulate them, can't help but hate them; the latter [[WellDoneSonGuy follows his Father's teachings to the letter]], and only upon his (near) death realises that Father never cared for him in return, and his adoptive human mother was the one person who truly loved him (it's shown that when she raises him from scratch, he becomes a genuinely kind-hearted child).]] Actually ''calling'' any of these four an AntiVillain is a stretch, however.
62	** In ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003'', [[spoiler: ''most'' of the Homunculi are presented as tragic figures, especially Wrath and Lust]]. The exceptions in this case are [[spoiler: Pride and Envy]]: the former, [[spoiler: despite [[StepfordSmiler his perceived]] [[VillainWithGoodPublicity congenial and kind image among the people of Amestris]], is shown to be anything but, and is never portrayed sympathetically, and with the way he dispatches the Chimera Marta and especially, later on, with the strangling of his MoralityPet son, is considered the most evil of the Homunculi;]] and the latter [[spoiler: does have a FreudianExcuse of ParentalAbandonment, but it's never seen as sympathetic enough to justify his sadism, violent nature, or [[TheSociopath sociopathy]]. Possibly fitting the common perception that these are the worst of the SevenDeadlySins, [[CoDragons Pride and Envy]] avert this Trope and are very ruthless, full-on villains instead, whereas the other five play it straight to some extent or another.]]

64	* In ''Manga/GameXRush'', it's difficult to see [[spoiler: either Yuuki or Miyuki]] as 100% villains, as they not only possess concrete [[FreudianExcuse alibis]] but really don't want to hurt anyone at all. LoveMakesYouCrazy, though.

He tries to assassinate the prime minister, is part of a terrorist group, and [[spoiler: attempts to arm the refugees with nuclear weapons.]] But it turns out that he only did it because he seemed to be the only one who really cared about the desperate situation of the millions of homeless refugees in east Asia, and tried to do at least something about it. Having a very tragic backstory only helps solidify his place as this.

In fact, [[GreenAesop he even mentions to his crew not to destroy the mountains just for a quick military strategy]]. AntiVillain indeed.
72	*** Garma's older brother Dozle deserves a mention, too. In spite of serving the country that instigated the war, he is probably the most likable Zabi. He cares about his soldiers, and would sacrifice his own life making the last stand alone in Solomon to get the surviving Zeon soldiers and his family to safety.
73	** ''[[Anime/MobileFighterGGundam G Gundam]]'' has a lot of possible border cases but [[spoiler: WellIntentionedExtremist Master Asia]] is surely one of them.
74	** ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Gundam Wing]]'' has Treize Kushrenada, who wants to unite the world and bring peace to it by giving it a war so spectacular and horrible that the people will cringe at the thought of another one. To do so, he's willing to go to any ends, such as manipulating people, assassinating political opponents, and launching vast conquests. But he's also one of the most noble characters in the series, who acknowledges full well his atrocities, and remembers the name of every single person who died because of him as a memorial to them. He even intends to [[DeathSeeker die]] in what he perceives to be the final battle [[TheAtoner as atonement.]]
75	** ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEED Gundam SEED]]'' and, especially, ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny Gundam SEED Destiny]]'' has it's share depending on how much you rely on WordOfGod about who are the heroes and villains in the latter.
76	** ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundam00 Gundam 00]]'' has several, mostly because the protagonists' goals (uniting the world as one) conflict with a variety of not-evil interests in the current politics. The most notable is Colonel Sergei Smirnov, who's generally regarded as the most [[ReasonableAuthorityFigure honorable, moral, and downright ''nice'' person]] in the entire series. It's considered telling that he's the only antagonist character thus far that hasn't wound up in the Titans homage organization A-LAWS (though Kati Mannequin only joined at his request because ''someone'' needed to keep an eye on such a secretive and powerful organization. Also, loser ace Patrick only joined because he's got a crush on Kati, despite her telling him not to do so).

During his infiltration mission as a NewTransferStudent, he forms genuine friendships with the people around him, especially future Gundam pilot Asemu Asuno. He's deeply troubled by Asemu's determination to be a soldier because he doesn't want a kind-hearted person to end up like him, and tries several times to persuade him not to be a Gundam pilot for that reason (and because Asemu's presence on the battlefield interferes with Zeheart's judgment). [[spoiler:He's also willing to sacrifice himself to stop a space fortress from crashing into Earth; fortunately his boss Lord Ezelcant saves him]].

Zagato's minions, apart from Alcyone, are Anti Villains themselves; Ascot and Caldina even promise to leave the girls alone after being defeated.

Tarta and Tatra want to expand Chizeta's miniscule territory for the comfort of their people and say they don't want to oppress anyone. Aska desires Cephiro purely out of avarice, but she's a child and isn't acting maliciously. In the anime, even Nova is given sympathetic reasons for why she is who she is ([[spoiler:she is the embodiment of Hikaru's negative feelings, making her a sort-of SuperpoweredEvilSide]]), thus leaving Debonair ([[spoiler:and Alcyone, as long as she's BrainwashedAndCrazy]]) as the ''only'' truly evil villain.

All of them fall under the WorthyOpponent type, doing things like holding back to not kill people, and going out of their way to make sure their opponent is okay after she's been attacked by a third party. Almost all of them join the heroes' side after being [[DefeatMeansFriendship befriended]] by Nanoha or her cohorts. In fact, a good portion of Nanoha's current cast is made up of former anti-villains.

Unbreakable Dark is a PersonOfMassDestruction who cannot control herself and she is forced to destroy anything and anyone she encounters, but she always warns the people to leave her alone, so she wouldn't kill them.

However, as the series progresses he demonstrates increasing motivational complexity and at least a degree of care for his allies, and eventually his [[DarkAndTroubledPast tragic backstory]] is revealed: [[spoiler:As a young child, Shigaraki dreamed of becoming a hero himself, but consequently suffered months or years of borderline abuse from his father taking his own hang-ups on heroes out on him. Then, his [[BlessedWithSuck genetically-anomalous disintegration superpower]] awakened [[DiabolusExMachina at the worst possible time]], causing him to murder his entire family in a half-accident, half-fit of rage. Shortly afterwards, he was taken in by [[BigBad All for One]], who spent years [[TheCorrupter actively encouraging the child to feed his hatred and become a villain, rather than heal from his trauma]]; and who pretended to be acting out of benevolent concern for Shigaraki's wellbeing and a desire to train him as his successor, but was actually just [[TheChessmaster setting him up to traumatize his archenemy, steal the ultimate superpower, and take over his body to replace his own injured one]].]] So Shigaraki is basically a decent person who was railroaded into being a villain by all the circumstances around him; and the more [[HeroProtagonist Deku]] realizes that [[ThePawn he didn’t go down this path of his own volition]], the more he feels that his true goal shouldn’t be just to defeat Shigaraki, but to find some way to [[TheRedeemer do what a hero does best and SAVE him from the darkness he’s fallen into.]]
118	** Hero-Killer Stain is a vicious murderer that targets heroes that he feels are acting only in their self-interest because he idolizes "real" heroes (i.e. Those who act selflessly and for the sake of right as opposed to for fortune or fame) such as All Might. He ends up saving Izuku's life because he sees Izuku as following in All Might's footsteps. Stain has a good point about the flaws of the hero system, which is filled with many a {{Punch Clock Hero}}es and {{Nominal Hero}}es who are OnlyInItForTheMoney and/or personal glory, and some are outright villainous behind the scenes (most notably [[spoiler:Endeavor prior to his HeelRealization]]). The problem is that Stain is also ''insane'' and his "solution" to corruption in the hero system is monstrous.

For all that though she’s still quite AffablyEvil in the anime, displaying gratitude towards Nausicaä for saving her life and judging by the credits departs the Valley of the Wind on peaceful terms.
129	* ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'' has tons of them. Actually, there's only really been one evil bad guy, the infamous PsychoLesbian [[StalkerWithACrush stalker]] Tsukuyomi.
130	** Chao Lingshen will not hurt anyone except TheHero himself. Her motive is to end TheMasquerade, which Negi and the rest of the protagonists can't really find any problem with. Later on, it's implied that a lot of Eva's Uber-Evil reputation is greatly exaggerated, and that what evil she ''did'' do was in response to being an outcast in society.

His "evil plan" is to save them by sending them all to a (suspiciously afterlife-like) pocket dimension before that can happen, since most of them can't exist on Earth, and the remaining ones are still too numerous for Earth to handle]].

He may run one of the worst [[HellholePrison Hellhole Prisons]] in fiction, but he is presented as a guardian who honestly wants to prevent all the worst criminals in the world from terrorizing the public. While he is willing to take advantage of the right given to him by the World Government to kill the prisoners if he must, he is ''much'' less evil than many other staff of the prison who have that right, and after the mass breakout, he willingly takes complete responsibility for what happened, even at one point considering suicide for his failure. (He does not, and is later simply demoted.)

Sure enough, he becomes the BigBad of the Monster Association Saga [[spoiler:after Psykos is neutralized and "God" stays behind the scenes]].

However Eboshi herself while arrogant is a very compassionate person who takes in and cares for lepers and prostitutes and does genuinely apologise to Ashitaka for the pain she’s inadvertently brought him. She simply doesn’t care for the forest, valuing industrialism over nature which puts her at odds with it guardians such as the titular NatureHero San. [[spoiler:Making matters worse the Emperor tasks her with bringing the head of the Forest God in return for his protection against warring Samurai and she dutifully carries it out, almost getting everyone killed when the Forest God becomes GreyGoo and losing an arm to Moro. To her credit she’s very remorseful in the ending and wishes to find Ashitaka and thank him.]]

You can't help but feel at least a tad sympathetic towards the guy, despite the dog-kicking he did.]]

She has no idea that the dream world they've created is slowly crushing the town around her as it expands, and genuinely believes that the dream-Entei they created is her father, and Ash's captured and hypnotized mother is her mother, remaining completely oblivious to the harm her wishes are causing. The Unown are the actual driving force behind everything, but they seem to be {{Almighty Idiot}}s even more oblivious to what's going on than Molly is. Entei is the direct antagonist, but he's just fulfilling Molly's wishes, which he badly misinterprets.
152	* Ashram from ''Roleplay/RecordOfLodossWar'' starts out as one of King Beld's two [[TheDragon Dragons]], and his first defining scene is the brutal massacre of a keep the heroes are staying at for the night. However, the second series in particular shows him doing everything he does to improve the life of the people of [[TheEmpire Marmo]], so they no longer have to rely on war and pillaging as their only means of survival. He even gains the loyalty of a priest of the God of War, who was awed by his display of all the traits that make a true, honorable knight and defender of the weak.

Because Angela happens to be a witch, Mifune believes that she will never be accepted by Shibusen and is forced to side with the villains by default. [[spoiler: In the anime, his opinion is eventually changed and he is offered a position as a teacher at Shibusen. In the manga, however, he eventually dies in his final fight with Black Star. This is especially tragic, as Angela is taken in by Shibusen afterwards, proving Mifune's entire goal to have been misguided.]]

He also has a [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds very sympathetic backstory]]. [[spoiler:When he was a child and his father, Mr. Legend, lost his powers, Legend became a brutal {{Domestic Abuse}}r. It eventually reached the point where Lunatic was forced to use his own powers to kill his father to save his mother's life. Ever since then, despite taking care of her well into adulthood, his mother still holds him responsible for the event]].

He volunteered to become a cyborg to defend his home planet Gladius, and after he learns of the galaxy energy, he decides his new goal is to create a planet that those who are planet-less can return to. 177	* Though the manga's still on hiatus, Fuuma from ''Manga/{{X1999}}'' appears to be one of these, and may, in fact, be the only character in the series with any idea of what's really going on, and often strongly hints that the reason he does everything he does is to force Kamui into realizing his ''true wish'', which is the only way that the future can be altered. The anime series and TheMovie turn him into much more of an outright villain.

However, Mokuba reveals that his obsession with winning games to such a homicidal degree was the result of internalizing Gozaburo's abuse and traumatizing suicide. Being forced to literally put his mind back together by Dark Yugi makes him a better person, thought still a JerkWithAHeartOfGold.
181	* In ''Anime/YuGiOh5Ds'', [[spoiler: there exists a group called Yiliaster, which is revealed to be from the future. They are trying to destroy Neo Domino City, but only to SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong, because, in their future, Momentum (the power source of the city) will end up causing [[ApocalypseHow the (near) extinction of humanity and, possibly, life on earth in general]]. Also, to be fair, it's not like destroying Neo Domino City was their first attempt at changing the future,]] as it's implied that they tried many other things before their current plan, so it's not that they didn't try other options, it's that the other options simply didn't work.
182	* ''Anime/YuGiOhVRAINS'' has the Knights of Hanoi. The upper echelon of the Knights, consisting of their founder, his son, three former scientists, and one of their former victims, commit unsavory acts in the first season but only in their quest to terminate the Cyberse and with it the Ignis. While they at first seem like radical cyber-terrorists, the actions of [[spoiler: Lightning, Windy, Bohman, and Haru]] justify their hostility towards the Ignis to an extent, and that the remaining Knights are committed to eradicating the Ignis for the protection of humanity.
