As one of the predecessor good Digimon 02 remake of Digimon 02 The Story We Never Told I am initially enticed by its good plot, action scenes and characterization. However, once I invested in the latter and red a couple of other "epic adventure" stories like The Citadel Of Truth, I began to find a couple of flaws that are present in the story.
The first flaw that I find is the tons of Idiot Ball and Villain Ball that I find along the storyline (Like why couldn't Devimon or Digimon Emperor just directly kill the Digidestined if they can directly enter their homes), like tens of them and generally themes that are not really Digimon-like (Militaristic Digimon army and Hive Mind Digimon both being based on Halo's Covent, or the Terminator armies that the author admits to being sugar-high at the time he created them) breaks a lot of my Willing Suspension of Disbelief. Another issue is the fact that every single Digidestined's Digimons that could not Digivolve into Mega ended up being Power crept to the ground, thus they didn't do anything of significance at all. So why even bring them into the storyline if all they can do is getting jobbered by the bad guys. Another one is the shoehorning references to other series such as Dragonball or Star Trek that serves no purpose but to create some cheap humor that doesn't really fit the tone of the fan fiction.
So what does the fan fiction do good on? Well the plot is actually well-done, properly coherent and also consistent even if its a bit on the shallow side. I also enjoy the Call Back moments that pertains to the first series as it feels natural, nostalgic and doesn't feel shoehorned at all. The actions and the story flows are also well done as I often feel the flow of how the scenes are being partaken thanks to its use of "sound effects". And lastly, the OCs and some returning characters, both the villains and heroes are well-characterized and fit well into the story, even Mary Sue "at first" Shaun.
The final verdict of this fan fiction is a 7/10, while it is not a perfect story like I once believed, it's still a great fan fiction and has the worthy title as being the only two Digimon 02 remakes that the author genuinely invest the story in.
FanFic A good rewrite of Digimon Adventure 02 if a bit flawed
