Screw Digibro, The Asterisk War is awesome

So, I watched the whole series of The Asterisk War on Hulu. Then, because I saw comparisons to Chivalry of a Failed Knight here, I started watching that series.

Only to turn it off halfway through episode three.

I'm not an otaku, I'm a speculative fiction nerd. I like stories with good worldbuilding, and for this I definitely prefer TAW. It's real social science fiction: it actually dares to think about what kind of a Crapsack World would turn teenagers into gladiators. It's focused on characterization, the struggles faced by the characters and the friendships and rivalries between them. And I don't find the harem gags in that other series at all cute or endearing, I find them annoying, and I'm glad TAW mostly dispenses with them.

So now I'm up to volume 9 of the novels from Yen Press, and I decline to give the opinions of Internet anime pundits another thought.

Eh, I preferred it when they were eating boar and punching Romans.

Book me today! I also review weddings, funerals and bar mitzvahs.

I\'m going to assume you\'re just a fan of this genre, because otherwise I don\'t see how you\'d find Asterisk War anything less that bog standard white bread. On the opposite end, I can\'t understand your rejection of Failed Knight since it\'s literally the same show.

It\'s really quite simple:

  • I like the way Julis respects Ayato basically right from the get-go instead of either worshiping him or demeaning him.
  • Putting the protagonist\'s kid sister into his harem in Chivalry grossed me out. If I wanted to see that I\'d watch Game of Thrones.

The sister is fair cop, though I want to point out she isn\'t in anyone\'s harem and her feelings are never treated as acceptable.
