Civil War vs. Dawn of Justice: Whose side are you on?

Yes, I will compare this film with another one. You can blame DC for this. They wanted Dueling Works, they got them.

  • The polarizing idea: Here, it is a heavy issue, and stays being polarizing after the end of the film. In DOJ, it's basically a misunderstanding, and it's casually dismissed with a contrived coincidence.
  • The main characters: Captain America and Iron had 2 and 3 standalone films, and 2 shared films. There is a background for this film. Superman had a sole film, and Batman was brand new, their conflict is completely rushed.
  • The third musketter: Spider-Man is a great Breakout Character, and for moments you may even forget that it's not his film. The trailers did not spoil anything, except of his Dynamic Entry. Wonder Woman is more similar to a Spice Girl than an Amazon warrior, her entry was her only interesting scene, and the trailers spoiled it.
  • The villain: Luthor hates metahumans, but creates a metahuman to destroy another. Not a great plan. Zemo hates metahumans and, staying true to that motivation, his master plan against the Avengers is completely devoid of metahuman help (in fact, he had a chance for that, and rejected it on purpose)
  • The secondary characters: As a long and well established universe, all of them have their backgrounds and motivations. In the other, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg are basically forced into the script, just to "rush" a cinematic universe with a single film.
  • The original story: Civil war is based on Civil War, the greatest story by Marvel comics of all time, and makes justice to it. The other is based on the cheap story that first introduced the "kill the character for some easy sales, and bring him back in a couple of months" cliche. And it will make justice to it... but is that a good thing?
  • The Future: Marvel has made so many great films, and there is still a bright future ahead of this. Black Panther, Spider-Man, Iron Man 4, Ant-Man 2, Infinity War, etc. DC ruined things so badly (even Deadpool outgrossed them), that they are already considering to abandon the idea of a shared universe.
It goes without saying: Marvel is better than DC in all possible ways.

The plot of \"The Death of Superman\": Hulk with Serial Numbers Filed Off (a.k.a. Doomsday) comes from out of nowhere, destroys everything in sight for absolutely no reason, fights against Superman and the Justice League for absolutely no reason, and they kill each other. The end.

Yes, Civil War is better than that, but that\'s not a very difficult thing to accomplish. Any comic book story is better than that. DC was so relaxed in that they would earn millions with the concept of \"killing Superman\", that they did not bother at all to even try to write a story.

Point 6 is the only thing I disagree with. The Death of Superman comic is an infinitely better story than the Civil War comic.

Really it should be flipped around. Marvel Studios turned a shitty event comic into one of the greatset comic book films ever made, while Warner Bros. essentially added one part of a memorable comic storyline as an afterthought to their bloated mess of a film. The whole Death of Superman storyline would take an entire film by itself to tell properly, because contrary to your impression it doesn't begin and end with Doomsday.

Yes, I really expect DC to have retconned that crappy story afterwards, and give an origin story and a motivation to that cheap Hulk ripoff. But that would have been afterwards. The story as it was first published, has none of that.

Well, it\'s your opinion and I\'m not here to change it.

I am one of the few people who actually like the Civil War comic, and even I think calling it "the greatest Marvel comic of all time" is ludicrous. I could easily quote at the very least five or six (possibly more) Marvel comics who were better. And I honestly disagree regarding Wonder Woman.

Frankly I don't care if DC "asked for it", I find it annoying how people keep comparing this two movies.

They asked to be. Warner is directly competing with Marvel, so recent or similar releases are gonna be compared to one another.

It was inevitably gonna happen with Captain American: Civil War and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice

First of all, spoilers for the Winter Soldiers - my friend filled me in on the movie so no biggie for me, but them being killed off is a pretty bold spoiler - even more than the end of Bv S, because Doomsday's claim to fame was killing Superman.

Second, there's no way Civil War is worse than Bv S. Maybe it was a bit weaker than the critical reception makes it out to be, I can buy it being a bit bland in places because they rushed Spiderman and Black Panther in ahead of their movies because they wanted to compete with DC. But Ant Man turning giant alone sounds more hype than anything that happens in Bv S, and things sound a lot more fluid and cohesive than the two and a half hour snorefest and waste of money that Batman vs Superman was.

Edit: what the hell, I added spoiler tags. They're still present as I edit this comment. Is the formatting broken?

Done. I never took those guys as a spoiler, I recognized them as a Red Herring, and I thought it was obvious.

@Very Melon: Is it so hard to just like both?

Also, adding to my above comments:

DC ruined things so badly (even Deadpool outgrossed them), that they are already considering to abandon the idea of a shared universe.

One: Deadpool outgrossed plenty of movies who already were big success of their own, being outgrossed by it is in no way a proof of failure; in fact, implying it is kinda is insulting to Deadpool fans.

Two: Where the heck did you hear they were already considering abandoning the idea of a shared universe?! I have found nothing about that, none of the DC fans I talked about did either, and as far as we know they haven't cancelled any of the movies coming next.

It might be an invited comparison, born out of stupid marketeers and board-room types who don\'t know what they have strangling good ideas in the crib, but it\'s not a fair one. This movie has the advantage of being built out of a pile of other good movies, while Batman v Superman was working off one.

I\'m sure this movie would also be impenetrable if you\'d never seen another Marvel flick.

Theokal it's not about liking both, competing media being compared to one another just happens sometimes.

Several moms I know who\'ve seen the movie understood it fine; they just needed a little primer on how Cap knew Bucky and who Scott Lang was.

Yes, Deadpool outgrossed several other films as well, but the comparison here is fit, because both films were released so close in time. The success of noble Mr. Pool embiggens the failure of the small DC universe.

And yes, it is right. Marvel has the \"advantage\" of having several good films in their back, and this one has only one. But it is not an advantage caused by luck or some outside help, Marvel forged that advantage for themselves. The Avengers may have been in the table since day 1 of the MCU, but it was the sixth film. DC wants to skip all the hard work and jump to the loads and loads of characters right away? They think themselves to be ready for those comparisons? They even wanted to release the film on the same day of Civil War? So be it.

I fail to see how.
