In fairness, my argument against them writing "Harshwhinny" on a piece of paper would be that it would probably look really unprofessional.

Is "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot YMMV in this episode? They could have, if they'd only asked the tourist pony for confirmation on her identity when first meeting her.

"Could Have Avoided This!" Plot is like What the Hell, Hero?. It's not the situation, it's the lampshading of the situation. Also, "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot is about when the villain engages in villainy and is admonished because they attacked instead of asked.

As a result, it's a Square Peg Round Trope, and trope to describe this is Idiot Plot.
