I really don't think Kagaya is a Designated Hero. Everything the guy did was for the greater good, and he did give his family the opportunity to escape. They chose to stay by him.

So the entry was cut for being a "biased entry." Which isn't inherently reason to cut something. Is there anything incorrect about the entry, though? He is acting for the greater good, but he's shockingly bad at it and needlessly brutal. The Final Selection isn't just cruel, it's wasteful. Many of these dozens of kids could grow to be good Demon Slayers if their first test wasn't rigged against them. And the entry isn't claiming that they didn't have a choice, but that giving them a choice is in of itself a bad look.

Not to mention the fact he's maintaining The Masquerade for... literally no reason even though he considers demons to be an existential threat. Or hell, just frigging plant more wisteria. There's an effective way to ward off demons and it's an invasive plant. Sharing that knowledge with the world might be useful.

Another thing that isn't touched on is the fact that killing Muzan can be construed as selfish, even if it's absolutely a good act. He and his family are cursed and the only cure for that is killing Muzan.

I haven't read the manga so I haven't witnessed the context about his suicide attack. I also don't know if this is a common perception in the fandom or if it's just one person, but given the entry was tweaked by many editors I assume it's not someone with a Single-Issue Wonk.

The entry as of its cut:

  • Designated Hero: Kagaya is a lot less morally upstanding than the All-Loving Hero and Father to His Men that the story shills him as. While he may take the effort to remember the names of all the slayers under him who are killed in the line of duty, he also indirectly causes most of their deaths himself by sanctioning the brutal Final Selection. Instead of say, having the new blood go on a few missions alongside more experienced slayers so they can learn relatively safely, or even just holding preliminary tests to weed out the weak non-lethally first, trainees who have never even fought one demon yet are thrown straight into the deep end against hundreds of them, which the majority of applicants don't survive. Then there's his actual family, who he neglects to send to safety when he knows Muzan is coming, causing two of his daughters to get caught up in his suicide attack. While said daughters were supposedly willing to die with him, is that seriously a decision any caring parent would allow children that young to make? All in all, calling your followers your children is a pretty hollow gesture when you treat your real children like that.

If I had to guess? It was tweaked by many editors because they acknowledge it has a point but feel it goes out of its way to present things in as slanted and unflattering a manner as possible. As a battle-hardened (and battle-scarred) veteran of the Persona 4 page, I understand that feeling well.

At the very least, though, that last bit about his kids is a low blow, considering, iirc, he wanted them to leave and they insisted on staying. And I'm not sure we can call his desire to rid the world of Muzan selfish and for his own benefit when he stoically decides to let himself die if it means ridding the world of the master-vampire.

I do think, more than anything else, he's just trapped by the strictures of the genre though.

That makes sense, the entry does sound more like a valid point looking for a viable trope to be expressed. And again, I'll take your word on the kids thing since I don't know the context, I just know the statement Codafett made about it is irrelevant since it's commenting on something the entry wasn't arguing.

Maybe an Idiot Ball entry is in order, since he's shown to be intelligent and caring, but due to the genre he's in he has to make fantastically stupid decisions at times to facilitate the plot?

Three reasons why the entry should be reinstated.

1. You can't delete a YMMV entry just because you personally disagree with it. That's the whole point of YMMV, some people agree and some don't. As long as there are people who do see Kagaya this way, that alone justifies the entry on this page. For good measure though, let's examine the justifications presented.

2. The entry specifically states this as a downplayed example. Yes, Kagaya's goal is an objectively good thing, however his methods are unnecessarily brutal. That's the key word here, unnecessary, because:

3. The entry is correct, there's no explanation given for why the test has to be do or die right out the gate. The series presents no reason why the Corps can't weed out the weak non-lethally first. It's not just immoral, it's unpragmatic and counterproductive to waste fighters who could have still been useful with further training and it wastes all the time spent training them thus far. I'd even go so far as to question why Final Selection is necessary at all. What are they even trying to prove? That the applicants are strong enough to become Slayers? If you're just going to kill the weak ones anyway, what difference does it make? You'd rather applicants die facing demons that are already caged than let them at least try to kill demons that are still at large? Sorry, but Final Selection just doesn't work on any level. There's such a thing as a Necessary Evil, but this isn't an example.

I'm going to writeup an example for Unintentionally Unsympathetic. I think that's the best fit for now.

So... beta Tanjiro for Memetic Badass? People have been showing him absolutely annihilating people like Muzan, which definitely feels appropriate for that.

Does anyone else know Holo-Chronicles? No? Just me? Well do yourself a damn favor and look it up, because it is AWESOME.

I think the resolution of episode 19 is an Ass Pull. I don't know if the source material is guilty of it, but Tanjiro suddenly remembering his dad was a fire dancer falls flat for me because 1) his father was a non-entity until this episode and 2) it wasn't foreshadowed at all.

I know the episode foreshadows that when people are about to die they remember something important in hope they can survive, but while it foreshadows that, the series didn't foreshadow or even mention Tanjiro's father, making it feel flat for me personally.

Sorry if I sound redundant but I needed to discuss this with someone who is more familiar with the source material. Keep in mind I think the episode is moderately ok beyond the great presentation.

To win, you need to adapt, and to adapt, you need to be able to laugh away all the restraints. Everything holding you back.
