As I write this, the section on The X-Files says in part:

There is also the values of the show. It was made in a post-Cold War environment where the big buzzword was the "new world order", Bush Senior's term to describe the new, American-dominated state of global affairs where market capitalism and liberal internationalism reigned supreme — and coincidentally, also a term used by conspiracy theorists to describe the Evil Plan of the conspiracy. The militia movement and their pet conspiracy theories were at their peak during this era, especially after President Bill Clinton was caught with his pants down. It's been argued that the real death blows for the show (beyond Seasonal Rot) were the 9/11 attacks and The War on Terror removing that environment from the mainstream, consigning it to the radical fringes of society and making it somewhat disrespectful to openly support it for the next decade or so. It's not a coincidence that the show's 2016 revival came just as conspiracy theory culture had returned to prominence.

I used to have a booklet about top 100 TV shows or something by, I think, "Entertainment Weekly" which pointed out that the first episode of The X-Files is coincidently set on a September 10th. I have read the attitude of ignoring terrorism outside of right-wing types described as 'September tenth thinking'. Edited to change a bit I thought might be inflammatory, and to add I think the FBI hasn't changed focus that much.

This got cut with the reason "Feel free to re-add if you disagree, but I think since the show is explicitly acknowledged as taking place in 1999, it wouldn't be unintentional." I have no idea what that edit reason is trying to say. The show takes place in 1999... because it came out in 1999.

  • Digimon Adventure: The fashions of the Digidestined and Izzy's Apple Powerbook-like computer can give one an idea of the time. The dub of the movie has shades of this; much like Pokémon below, shows how the 90s didn't immediately fade out in 2000. The fact that much of the connections rely on dial-up date this incarnation before broadband became readily-available and caught on. Those who aren't familiar with AOL may also find the "You've got mail!" line in the movie confusing or merely quaint given the influence of Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

The entry on Hyperland says:

"the co-presenters were Douglas Adams and Tom Baker, who are now nowhere even close to how big they were in the late 80s and very early 90s."

In the late 80s and early 90s, Tom Baker was known as the bloke who used to be on that sci-fi show that got cancelled. Today he's known as the voice of Little Britain ... and the bloke who used to be on what since became the biggest show on the BBC. Author Existence Failure aside, I'm not sure DNA is any more or less of a household name now than he was then.
