It appears quite arbitrary to separate the Japanese V As into "voice actors" and "recent voice actors", I suggest we just combine the two folders. Since this is a rather big change, I don't want to take action unilaterally.

I agree. The folder would be very long, but it could be separated into sections like "A-G", "H-P", and so on. Also Examples Are Not Recent makes it very clear that the word "recent" should be avoided.

I have an alternative, aside of alphabetical. However, this requires quite a bit more intensive research.

Sort the seiyuu based on the age where they're most prominent at. This may include seiyuus like Hiroya Ishimaru or Akira Kamiya being in the '80's' or something, as they seem to be getting popular during the era of Fist Of The North Star and Mazinger Z. Whereas for seiyuus like Mamoru Miyano or Jun Fukuyama, they can be at around The 2000's, whereas they get popular with the release of Death Note and Code Geass.

The flaw: This will be heavily linked with Star-Making Role. So I can see implementing this will be more difficult. However, it'll make the list of seiyuus more variative when compared to the Dub VA's where they can take advantage of their base locations.

This is to add variation on the Japanese side. What do you think? If all else fails, then alphabetical sorting it is.

If anyone does not mind, I will try to make a Sandbox to experiment on this.

I propose that for the English voice actors section, we will need a special section for people who are currently less likely to reprise anime roles, but they could still be heard voice acting in other things like Western Medias due to the being Union-only. The likes of Steve Blum, Crispin Freeman, etc

And yes, I think that includes Troy Baker. Just because he doesn't do anime a lot more doesn't mean he's retired in voice acting in general.

I think we need to get rid of the Gratuitous Japanese on this page. Why use the word seiyuu when it just means "voice actor"? (And before you say anything, yes, that's all it really means.) It spreads the misconception that seiyuu means anime voice actor specifically. I've changed it, so that it now says the exact same thing but in English, which I don't think anyone could see any problem with. And if you have a good reason to change it back, well, This Is A Wiki.

Because one word is shorter than two, especially if it means the same thing. :P

I agree with James James. This fad of misusing Japanese words while speaking English is pretentious & confusing & it needs to die. Also, linking to this article when using the term doesn't help because this article doesn't talk about the term.

There's a lot of side info listed under Dub Voice Actors tab that's already stated on the voice actor's page. Since this page's main purpose is to list prominent anime voice actors, I suggest that most of the side info be cut or moved to their Creator's own page.

The reason I re-added the info back in was due to the fact that some of the voice actors (e.g. Steve Blum, Crispin Freeman) have been doing Union voice work or transitioning to other careers.

In my opinion I think that some info for the Voice actors need to remain HERE, since their was NO REAL reason to remove all of the information so deal with it. :(

I believe that information can clearly be stated on the Creator's page regardless. Creator pages are used to list any information about that specific creator, so it's seems unnecessary to list all that information here. This page is to mainly list the names of the voice actors, hence the title "Names to Know in Anime".

But I do believe we should put whether they're union or not in case it's NOT on the page.

Is it worth it to make some trivia about which dub voice actors are 'union only' or not? Some like Troy Baker, Steve Blum, Crispin Freeman...

This just seems like Trivia to me. I like reading about influential figures in anime as much as the next guy, but I don't like having a list of names interrupt the flow of reading about in-universe Tropes. So I'm planning on moving examples of this on work's pages to the Trivia tap.

Thoughts?

Question: What to do with the Seiyuu and Dub Voice Actor sections?

  • Leave them on this page.
  • Remove them from this page and
    • Merge them with the Voice Actors page, or
    • Make Seiyuu a populated page instead of a redirect.

If "merge", then the long list in Voice Actors should be separated by primary language (English, French, Japanese, etc)?

If separate page, then should the Dub Voice Actor section go away?

That's more of a Wiki Talk question than discussion question. I'm in favour of a single page for all voice actors to begin with. If we need to split them up by country / language, that should be determined by size, and indexed on the voice actor page.

Question! I know there are tropers here who are more or less well-versed in Latin-American dubbing and how it's often very centered in anime dubs, so would it be okay to start adding them here too? And if not, what should we do as an alternative?

Since the LA-VA names were deleted (rather aribtrarily, imho), I put them back but under their own section. If these people work on dubbing too and many of them actually became well known in Latin America for their anime work, then simply deleting them on no reason other than "No Latin American dubs" doesn't sound well - and this is saying it VERY politely.

I was wondering, which Japanese seiyuu did dub voices for Rick Moranis (who was in movies such as Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, and Honey I Shrunk The Kids)?

I made some google fu and the only real "result" said that his Space Balls role was dubbed by the late Kei Tomiyama. No luck on others, tho.

What order are the directors supposed to be listed in? I just put Kazuya Tsurumaki at the end, but I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do.

I guess it is.

I'm thinking to add Tokusatsu actors amongst this, but who do you think deserves a page here? One that comes to mind for me, other than the obvious (Hiroshi Fujioka), is Hiroshi Miyauchi...
