I didn't see How I Met Your Mother's as a Downer Ending. What happened is true, but they have found happiness elsewhere, Barney as a father, Ted getting together with Robin, Marshall got into the Supreme Court, and Lily expecting their third child.

It's definitely intended as a Happy Ending, but wound up way more downer-y than intended, putting it squarely under Esoteric Happy Ending.
I hated it, but it doesn't really belong here, I don't think.

Would Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann qualify for this trope? I haven't seen the series myself, but I've heard the ending was sadder than a lot of fans expected. I don't know if it was extreme enough to qualify.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.
I'm wondering if this page should be split into endings that suddenly don't end happy for dramatic reasons and ones that do it for comedic reasons. Because comedic ones aren't "downers", at least to the audience.
