~Nubian Satyress: I'd like to ask why you believe that we need to police the trope list.
A long list of tropes is very much a good thing and in keeping with how we do things on most of the site. Requiring discussion before adding stuff, by contrast, seems to violate the usual wiki behavior without unique circumstances.
Edited by RamidelI very much want to add the Lord Country page to the "Light Novels" section. As someone who grew up in a republic, I found the concept of a monarch with the last name of the country they rule to be baffling and strangely omnipresent in light novels in this setting. The addendum would probably look like this:
- Lord Country: Every human with a title will adopt the name of the land they govern as a family name. This is possibly because modern Japanese naming conventions give everyone exactly two names (a family name and a given name), and titles don't fit this template.
... but I readily admit to not being the most culturally sensitive guy around (I am going to play the autism card here; it's like walking through a minefield), so feel free to rewrite it.
Edited by LinusEitname Hide / Show RepliesIt's more of a monarchy thing than a Light Novel thing. One way to address a lord or monarch is as Lord Country.
Should the "Light Novels" section be rephrased as "Light Novels and Video Games?"
Light Novels tend to be more explicitly based on the video game style.
Wanna add this to the Monsters and Demihumans section:
- Harpies: Harpies, and other bird-like Winged Humanoids, are often friendly demihumans that serve the local community as messengers or light laborers. They tend to be one of the more temperamental races; they value their ability to fly (and thus freedom) and thus are often the the most beholden to their animal instincts. For this reason, there's often pockets of uncivilized or even antagonistic harpies, but even the friendly ones are usually birds of prey that hunt their own food such as fish or rabbits and occasionally even abduct their own mates. Like many bird species, they tend to be fiercely protective of their "nests".
And this to the Other Tropes section:
- Eternal Recurrence: Again taking cues from Buddhism, many Japanese fantasy settings emphasize recurring cycles or "kalpas". Not every kalpa completely mirrors others (for example, maybe one recurrence is some sort of Great Offscreen War while another has some major cataclysmic disaster), but the point is to emphasize that everything is a part of the natural order and that all things end someday. There can even be cycles within cycles (such as multiple generations of a family having similar life stories). This also covers things like Reincarnation and the eternal Yuusha vs Maoh rivalry.
Looking through TV Tropes, Harpies do seem like a part of Japanese Fantasy so go for that.
The Eternal Recurrence also seemed like a theme that occurs quite a bit in Japanese Fantasy, possibly because sequels as well. XD
Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree.I have a suggestions Trope that I feel happens a bit in Japanese Fantasy (particularly JRPGs), that being Tomorrowland.
- Tomorrowland: A civilization that has a technological leg up over everyone else, possibly to explain how advanced technology like Humongous Mecha exist in an otherwise medieval setting. This place is a good chance to be the capital of an evil empire, using their technological advantage to conquer the rest of the world. Otherwise, they tend to be isolationist, possibly using their technology to hide their civilization from outsiders.
Okay, my bad on the Gadgeteer bit. Anyways, we have a Our Kobolds Are Different so we can link the Kobold page to that.
Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree. Hide / Show RepliesNo biggie. I was just afraid from the beginning that people would start adding anything they saw once or twice in an RPG somewhere, so I was always considering adding a note for discussion.
And good point about the link.
Also considering the fact you're making the "Gadgeteer" focus on drones and turrets, maybe the name "Engineer" fits better since gadgets are not a major part of their class in your revision.
Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree.I don't think it really matters. I think it's one of those classes that each story/game gives its own unique name for. What we call it probably doesn't really matter.
I'd change it regardless as Gadgets refer to a small mechanical or electronic device or tool.
Some people say I'm lazy. It's hard to disagree.
edit: never mind, didn't read the page fully.
