"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI've had quite a bit of whiskey, but I am very interested in this. Has anyone seen the film "Burn After Reading"? In the last scene they recap on all of the significant compoments of the plot only to realise it is no longer credible and far too much to digest. The realisation demonstrates the farcical nature of the film and even endears the viewer to the point of mitigation of such an absurd plotline. Is this Lampshade Hanging? God I'm drunk.
Did anyone else learn about lampshading before Lampooning (I still don't remember what that is, which I'm fine with)? Because I was REALLY disappointed when I learned that Lampooning wasn't a Made of Win portmanteau of lampshading and harpooning.
https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/MadeOfWin ( didn't work for me so I'm giving up on formatting that and going to sleep.
Edited by bog624Can anyone explain to me the etymology behind this trope? I'm stumped for where the actual name of it comes from.
Musician, writer, game designer. Hide / Show RepliesThe page used to list the etymology, but apparently no longer does so.
I *think* the origin is that of a character being forced to quickly hide from others who simply grabs a lampshade and puts it over their head and ends up undetected. The idea is that if they just stood in a room with no disguise the audience wouldn't buy it, but so long as an effort, no matter how slight or ludicrous, is made our suspension of disbelief can kick in.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhy isn't there a page for "New Media" or "Web Original", i.e. web originals that don't fit under webcomics or web animation?
Yes, this one attracts quite a few potholes.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAnd misuse — a lot of people seem to think that it's a lampshade of Series A if parody Series B makes fun of something that happened in A.
The most mis-used trope on the entire wiki.
Do what the clock does, keep going.Who removed the Jim Ross quote? Was that you, Triple H?
Modified Ura-nage, Torture RackThe page image may be funny, but it doesn't really illustrate the trope. Can we find a better image, or is this something that can't really be shown visually?
One does not shake the box containing the sticky notes of doom!Yo dawg, I heard your lamp needs a new lampshade, so I brought a lamshade to lampshade your lamp and I'll take the old lampshade and repurpose it into a lampshade shaped hat. You're welcome.
Don't make me destroy you. @ Castle SeriesStill, I keep wishing this word was in common use in the rest of society, or at least that we had a good synonym for it. I keep wanting to say in English class, "the author lampshades this by...". TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Vocabulary
Another hilarious example of this effect: Superman, in a fictional story, loses his memory. Supergirl and Batman address the audience, saying that their knowledge of Superman's identity would spoil the story, so they keep quiet.
Could we add the lampshade in 'A Christmas Story' to the list because its skirt-like appearance makes the audience accept the existence of a leg-shaped lamp?
When should "lampshaded in ..." have a link that leads back to this page?
I posted the question at https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/remarks.php?trope=Main.ApathyKilledTheCat#10776
I have a great and unique lamp stands. Because they were antique and so beautiful, I decided to find custom designer and ask his opinion. I choose this service from http://www.jovin.com. Their restoration was fabulous.
