Regarding Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid I had the impression the girls in VD:M were not necessarily lesbians, but were dealing with "Situational Sexuality" (to use another trope to describe it). Considering how much the girls (including main character Mamori Tokonome) were starry-eyed over Akira Hiragi (The Governor) when they thought she was male. Granted, a nude Akira was enough to cause Mamori to spontaneously transform, but I think a lot of characters were "gay" merely out of necessity. Mirei's motivation at the beginning seemed more about protecting an innocent (that was what got her captured and sent to Mermaid Island anyway). Certainly as the series progressed Mirei and Mamori developed affections for each other, but I still think a large percentage of the other island inhabitants went back to their preferences before being sent to the island (Charlotte Scherzen is an entirely different story)

- Your Mileage May Vary due to the Romantic Two-Girl Friendship and No Hugging, No Kissing nature of the series, but Maria-sama ga Miteru may count. The main cast is full of girls who have extremely strong bonds with girls, especially with at least one girl and one of the few male characters to appear often is a Straight Gay.
