I'm gonna write it here, because it seems that there is a misconception of what is an "Anti-Hero" in videogames. An Anti-Hero has nothing to do with the trope The Hero. He is someone that will choose the wrong morals (In the context of the story!) to make good.

"The hero chooses good ways to achieve good. The anti-hero chooses bad ways to achieve good."

You should watch the Extra Credits video about; as they are accurate that playing as an Anti-Hero is tad imposible. Sure, the concept is really loose, but the examples i changed were or dumb or right but with a wrong reason; but a good choice of words is "He wants to be the anti-thesis of the Ideal Hero while still being a good guy."

It is a really long page for you to read so you assume a difference meaning for what you read in the title, but... An anti hero isn't:

  • Someone that kills: Remember what i said "In the context of the story!". If the game has a normal view of killing that statement is moot (Like FPS).
  • A Normal person being in the shoes of the Hero; that was the old definition of Anti-Hero before it morph into basically Batman. Add that example to the Classical Anti-Hero page.
  • A Protagonist that it's also a Jerk: That's a jerk; a Hero can also be a Jerk. If he is brood, jerk and cynical while still saving people, sure.
  • A normal human that doesn't want to be a hero: Let's be fair, that only happens in the beggining and it's just an excuse to introduce Character Development. That characters needs to become a normal hero so the player can play the game normally.
  • A Villain Protagonist: With this i mean that a Villain Protagonist isn't always no matter what an Anti-Hero. It is actually the contrary, an Anti-Villain. Because you're are playing the bad guy, but he has to have some remiding quality so you can identify and not be the evil one.
  • Examples Are Not Arguable

To put a resume: Anti-heroes are basically characters that if you put them in the bad guy side, you wouldn't think that it's weird.

No, techinally the best definition is the one i wrote earlier: "The anti-hero chooses bad ways to achieve good".

And remember that it's easy to define characters as anti-hero from other medias, but a video game protagonist can't be totally added to this type, since much besides it's personality, you are the character. Your actions are his actions. He maybe go and yell "Ha! I prefer when the weaklings die!" but it's just moot when you do your best to save a NPC. Most of the Analysis' Types can't be attributed to a player character.

It's easy to determine an anti hero in a manga/comic/film because you see all of their actions completly and without divergency, and so you can analyze that, but in a video game besides the cutscenes every action you're character makes doesn't impact his image as more that in impacts yours. note
