There are a number of directions to go here. Conditioned to Accept Horror, Too Broken to Break, Stopped Caring, Safety in Indifference, Had to Be Sharp, maybe a couple others.
It's largely based on the detail of how much the past events (childhood in this case) affected them, and how they deal with it now. Perhaps they are too broken to care about anything (Too Broken to Break), or are not broken but decided not caring is better (Stopped Caring, Safety in Indifference), or perhaps they developed the willpower to survive and thrive no matter what happens (Had to Be Sharp).

Due to having such a horrible childhood, this guy finds finds himself in another terrible position other people would think would be hell but he just shrugs it off like nothing wishing he could have came there sooner.
