The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
There's Funny Phone Misunderstanding. Your variant doesn't sound familiar though.
Happens in real life all the time, (At least if you work in a phone center —even one that is not into marketing!) And any time a phone line malfunctions. I'd almost consider this "chairs"...
I've seen it a lot. And not every trope on this site is super common.
Does it really not exist? Ooh I might have found a trope to add myself!
Hello After Hangup
Edited by TheZodiacI Can't Hear You when it isn't chairs as per ^^
I'd suggest Other Stock Phrases, but this is really isn't meaningful enough for that, even. Checking if the other person is still on the line and then checking the phone to confirm whether you've been disconnected is just a logical sequence of actions in response to having a call disconnected.
Lost in Transmission, His Name Is..., and Rudely Hanging Up are a few tropes that can involve this sort of interruption, your example might fit those.
Edited by Scorpion451I'll spin out some examples at some point. It doesn't seem logical to me at all.. I've never done it. These days I look at my smartphone screen but back in the day you'd hear the dial tone.
Seems fairly obvious why this would be in a script. Versus the person on the other end hanging up and scene ends. For comedy reasons and drama. , I'm sure Seinfeld has done it. Jerry hangs up and George is saying Hello? JERRY? JERRYYYY?
Examples Forthcoming.. someday.
I have entertained the possibility I am seeing normal everyday human behaviour as a trope, and I doubt I'd be the first!
Edited by TheZodiacWhat I do recall as a possible trope is scenes as described here.
Edited by eroockYou won't always hear the dial tone. Phones cut out at my workplace all the time, and it's not always easy to tell if the person stopped talking or if they hung up.
Currently Working On: Incorruptible Pure PurenessCertain phone systems don't cut to dial tone until you hang up, either- for instance at least in my area when the other person hung up you'd get silence for a while and then a busy signal.
You can see a good example of this at the stinger of Seinfeld episode s8 ep 21
Jerry: wow, poison control is even better than number one! Lady: hangs up Jerry: hello?
Trope for phonecalls: Saying Hello? after they've hung up Live Action TV
Hey tropers Have had a look but can't see a trope for this common one I see in film and TV (most likely comedy)
Character is on the phone and the person on the other end hangs up. So Character ends up asking Hello Hello? ... or saying their name. Hello? Jerry?
AND THEN THEY LOOK AT THE PHONE
Does this trope exist on here? should it?
