The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? You should be over at You Know, That Thing Where.
A kid named after a Star Trek character would be a case of Unfortunate Names. In fact, that article already describes that as an internal subtrope, which might be worth splitting off as its own trope: "Pop Culture Name — Someone named after a famous pop culture character whose name would ordinarily not enter consideration for use. In this case, the name is already popular, but it isn't something you'd think to name a human being under regular circumstances. Can result in an even more unfortunate name if the pop culture source's popularity is not enduring. Eg. Khaleesi"
One character wanting to give their kid an Unfortunate Name, and the other shooting the suggestion down, would fall under some variety of Playing with a Trope. Possibly Subverted, Discussed, Defied, or something else, depending on details of how the story presents it.
Then I'm thinking this would be Unfortunate Names averted...
Who Names Their Kid "Dude"? seems relevant too.
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.I can think of another Pop Culture Name example; Good Omens's Pepper's given names are Pippin Galadriel Moonchild. The former two are from The Lord of the Rings, while the latter is from The Neverending Story. Could be useful as Unfortunate Names is likely gonna be IUEO after its TRS.
Edited by Synchronicity^^ Yeah, I'd say parental disagreement over the acceptability of naming a kid after a Star Trek character would qualify for Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?.
On last night's Young Sheldon rerun, old Sheldon in his Wonder Years voiceover says he wanted to name his son Leonard Nimoy Cooper, after Leonard Nimoy, obviously. But Amy interjects saying he should be happy she went along with Leonard Cooper, presumably after Leonard Hofstadter.
On JAG, Harriet almost goes along with Bud on naming their first son James Kirk Roberts, because Bud explains it as something something Gaelic. But once she finds out it's after Captain Kirk on Star Trek, she decides they must choose another name.
Is this a trope we already have listed? Or maybe this is too rare a trope. Or maybe I'm defining it too narrowly.
